MINNEAPOLIS (4/22/00) -- Troy Urdahl (Jr., Litchfield, Minn.) hit a three-run home run in the first game, then pitched his Hamline University baseball team to victory in the second game, leading the Pipers to a sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Parade Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers won the first game 8-6 and won the second game 8-4.
Hamline improves to 8-16 overall and 5-9 in the MIAC with the sweep, while Augsburg drops to 5-24 overall and 1-13 in the MIAC.
Urdahl went 2-for-4 in the first game, scoring two runs, including the final run of the game in the seventh inning. His three-run homer in the fifth put Hamline ahead 4-2. Meanwhile, Urdahl struck out five Auggie hitters, while allowing just one walk and a hit batter in the second-game victory.
The Auggies took a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning of the first game, but the Pipers took the lead to stay with a three-run frame. Jason Grussendorf (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn./St. Paul Central HS) led off the inning with a double, then scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Mike Sutton (Sr., Portland, Ore./Madison HS). Jack Rowan (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) and Doug Amsden (So., North St. Paul, Minn.) reached base on walks. Nick Hansen (So., Eden Valley, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) drove in Rowan on a single, then helped to drive in Amsden on a delayed double-steal, with Amsden stealing home.
Nic Shelby (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, striking out five while walking five in a complete-game effort. Augsburg pounded 15 hits off of Hamline pitchers Dan Soular (Sr., Hoyt Lakes, Minn./Mesabi East HS) and Nathan Cousins (So., Moorhead, Minn.), but stranded seven runners on base and grounded into two double plays.
Hansen went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring double, while Urdahl, Julson and Grussendorf had two hits apiece for the Pipers.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a triple and a run-scoring single to lead Augsburg.
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.),
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) each had doubles for the Auyggie, Storholm's driving in two runs in the fifth inning. Six Auggies had two hits each in the first game --
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS), Marsh, Storholm, Sherry,
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) and
Jim Jansen (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS).
In the second game, Augsburg again got runners on base, getting 12 hits off of Urdahl, but could not put enough runners across the plate, stranding eight runners and again hitting into two double plays. Marsh went 4-for-4, while scoring a run, to lead the Auggies, while Schwalen went 3-for-4, driving in a run. Sherry had two hits, including a run-scoring double.
But the Pipers clawed away to take a lead, scoring two runs in the second and fourth innings and closing the door on the contest with a three-run sixth inning. Grussendorf had three hits, including a solo home run, scoring three runs. Sutton had two hits, including two-run double, while Brian Julson (So., Princeton, Minn.) also had two hits with a double. Tim Sonnek (Sr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) had two hits and scored a run.
Jeff Deeb (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, allowing all eight runs, six earned, in five-and-a-third innings of work.
Eric Mogenson (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) pitched in relief.
Augsburg plays at the University of St. Thomas in a rescheduled doubleheader on Monday (4/24) at 1 p.m. (note the site change to St. Thomas), while Hamline hosts Minnesota-Morris in a nonconference doubleheader Monday at 3 p.m. at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
