ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/24/00) -- The University of St. Thomas baseball team used an 11-run inning en route to a 13-5 first-game victory over Augsburg in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Monday. The Toms came back to take game two 23-6, as a 10-run second-inning rallied the Toms from a 3-1 deficit.
The Toms remain in first place in the conference at 12-2 and improve to 20-9 overall, with 13 wins in their last 14 games. UST coach Dennis Denning reached 200 career wins with the sweep and now is 200-54 (.787) in six seasons (98-16 MIAC). Denning also was 378-76 in 17 seasons at Cretin-Derham Hall. Augsburg drops to 5-26 overall and 1-15 in the MIAC.
Nate Sundberg (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had five hits and eight RBI on the day. He was 4-for-5 with a grand slam and a two-run homer in game two. Brad Bonine (So., Rosemount, Minn.) went 3-for-3 in game one including two hits in the 11-run fifth inning that staked the Toms to a 12-0 lead. Jake Mauer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman Jon Marzolf (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) started for UST and got the pitching win. He threw five shutout innings before allowing four earned runs in the sixth.
John Webb (Sr., Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) took the loss for the Auggies, one of three pitchers the Auggies used in the game. Just three of the seven runs he allowed were earned. Only four of the 13 runs the Auggies allowed were earned in the first game.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had triples for the Auggies in the first game, while
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had a double. Dittrich drove in two runs, while Marsh had one RBI.
In game two, Jon Guion (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) was 4-for-4, Tom Wilberg (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) was 3-for-4 and John Frein (Sr., Austin, Minn.) was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run. Sophomore Jon Schulz (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) got the win as he pitched six innings in his first MIAC start.
Matt Topp (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies, allowing 11 runs in an inning-and-two-thirds of work. Five pitchers worked for the Auggies in the second game.
Storholm and
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had home runs for the Auggies. Storholm went 3-for-3, while Erickson went 2-for-3. Dittrich had a double for Augsburg.
The Toms host St. Mary's Tuesday (4/24), while Augsburg hosts Carleton in its home finale on Tuesday at Parade Stadium. Both doubleheaders start at 2:30 p.m.
