MINNEAPOLIS (4/25/00) --
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) hit a three-run home run to lead Augsburg College to victory in the first game, and Tony LePage (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) pitched a shutout victory in the second for Carleton College, as the two teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Parade Stadium. Host Augsburg won the first game 8-2, and Carleton claimed the second win 5-0.
Augsburg is now 6-27 overall and 2-16 in the MIAC, while Carleton is now 4-27 overall and 2-16 in the MIAC.
The Auggies broke a 1-1 tie in the first game with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Erickson's three-run home run to left field.
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) also drove in a run on a single before Erickson's blast.
Augsburg added three more runs in the sixth to secure the win.
Jared Trost (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had a run-scoring double and
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had a run-scoring triple to key the Auggie attack in the frame. Trost and Dittrich each went 2-for-3 in the game.
Eric Mogenson (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) picked up his first pitching win of the season, striking out three while walking one and allowing eight hits. Chris Pierce (Jr., Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade Prep HS) took the loss for the Knights, despite striking out eight Auggies and allowing only two walks.
Josh Schroeder (Jr., Florence, Mont.) went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Carleton in the first game.
In the second contest, Carleton scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, taking advantage of four Augsburg fielding errors. All five Knights runs in the second game were unearned against Augsburg pitching.
James Skjong (Sr., Tyler, Minn./Russel-Tyler-Ruthton HS) opened the inning by reaching base on a fielding error, and after Greg Pearson (Jr., Chicago, Ill./The Latin School) reached base on a double, Skjong came in as Rob Holden (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) reached on a fielding error. A suicide-squeeze bunt by Drew Dean brought in Pearson, and Holden scored on another suicide-squeeze bunt by Alexander Meadow (Fr., Chicago, Ill./University Lab HS), who reached base on a throwing error. Meadow moved to second, stole third base and scored on another Auggie throwing error.
Pearson had two hits to lead the Knights in the second game, as the Knights mustered only five hits. Augsburg's
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) went 3-for-3 at the plate.
LePage pitched well for the Knights, despite not striking out an Auggie batter and allowing eight hits and a walk. He forced Auggie hitters to ground into two double plays and picked off a runner at first, and Knight catcher Holden threw out two Auggie runners attempting to steal.
Dave Fransen (Fr., Farmington, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, striking out one and allowing two walks.
Jeff Deeb (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched in relief for the Auggies, striking out two and allowing one hit.
Augsburg finishes its season with an MIAC doubleheader at St. Olaf on Saturday (4/29) in Northfield, Minn. Carleton hosts Minnesota-Duluth in a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
