NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/29/00) -- Big innings in both the first and second games spelled disaster for the Augsburg College baseball team, dropping its final doubleheader of the season at St. Olaf College on Saturday. The Oles, rated No. 4 in the nation in the Division III national polls, topped the Auggies 11-1 in the first game and 16-2 in the second.
Augsburg finishes its season 6-29 overall and 2-18 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf, with one conference doubleheader remaining (Monday afternoon at Carleton) improves to 29-3 overall and 16-2 in the MIAC.
An eight-run first inning off of Auggie starter
Nic Shelby (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) provided the difference in the first game, as 12 Oles came to the plate. Brian Sprout (So., Lake City, Minn.) had a triple and double in his two times at the plate in the first, scoring twice.
John Webb (Sr., Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) pitched the rest of the game for the Auggies, giving up just two earned runs while striking out four.
Augsburg's lone run came in the second inning, when
Adam Dittrich's (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) sacrifice fly drove in
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS). Augsburg was limited to three hits in the game, one from Storholm, one from Dittrich and one from
Frank Huebner (So., Northfield, Minn.).
Tin Thoreson (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn.) and Dan LaManna (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) had three hits apiece in the first game, Thoreson dding a double. Charlie Brookins (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) scored the first game pitching win, striking out six in four innings of work.
Another eight-run inning, this time in the sixth, gave St. Olaf the scoring outburst in the second game. Twelve Oles again reached the plate, with Sprout scoring twice an adding a triple. He had a leadoff home run in the first inning for a 2-for-3 day.
Lars Finanger (So., Decorah, Iowa) went 3-for-4 with a triple, while Kevin Quame (So., Benson, Minn.) had a two-run home run in the third inning. Sprout, Thoreson, LaManna, and Nick Beissel (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) had two hits apiece.
Storholm went 2-for-4 to lead the Auggies, including a double and run scored.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS),
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) and
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) had the other Auggie hits in the game.
Rob Deuth (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) picked up the complete-game victory for the Oles in the second game, striking out 12 Auggies while walking just one and allowing five hits.
Nick Rathmann (Fr., Waseca, Minn.) took the loss, pitching five innings.
Eric Mogenson (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Jared Lynch (So., Jordan, Minn.) pitched in relief.
