ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/5/00) -- Bethel College limited Augsburg College to just nine hits and took advantage of six Auggie errors in two games to claim a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, winning 5-2 in the first game and 5-1 in the second.
With the losses, Augsburg drops to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in the MIAC. Bethel improves to 14-8-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.
Bethel was paced by Jon Nuss (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who went 3-for-4 in the doubleheader, with a solo home run in the second game and a double in the first. He scored two runs. Jeremy Belisle (Sr., Elk River, Minn./Big Lake HS) also had three hits, in five at-bats, while driving in three runs. He had a double in each game.
Jason Lenz (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) pitched the Royals to the first-game win, striking out seven while wakking three, while Dale Eng (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) struck out four in the second-game win.
Matt Topp (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) took the first-game loss for the Auggies, allowing five runs and nine hits. Meanwhile,
Nic Shelby (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) fell victim to Augsburg's five errors in the second game, allowing just two earned runs.
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) had three hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Auggies.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) each had doubles.
Augsburg hosts St. Mary's in its conference home-opening doubleheader Saturday (4/8) at 1 p.m. at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. Bethel hosts St. Thomas in an MIAC doubleheader Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
