Football 9/16/00 -- Augsburg 24, Carleton 15
MINNEAPOLIS (9/16/00) --
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) scored three touchdowns and accumulated 133 yards of total offense Saturday night, leading Augsburg College to a 24-15 win over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday night at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Warden had 27 rushes for 93 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards to lead the Auggies to the victory. He scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half as Augsburg built a 21-7 halftime lead. He had scoring rushes of 1 and 5 yards, and an 11-yard touchdown reception from
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.).
Augsburg dominated action from start to finish, with 82 offensive plays to Carleton's 54. Augsburg had a time-of-possession edge of 39 minutes, 52 seconds to Carleton's 20:08.
Tetzloff completed 20 of 34 passes for 243 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the contest.

Football 9/16/00 -- Carleton at Augsburg Game Notes
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (0-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) host the Carleton College Knights (0-1 overall, 0-0 WIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field (2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 46-46 career mark. Carleton coach Bob Sullivan (St. John's '58) is in his 22nd season at Carleton and has a 101-106 career mark.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season. Carleton's radio coverage is on KYMN-AM 1080. Because of nighttime broadcast restrictions for KYMN, the game will be aired on a tape-delayed basis Sunday at 4 p.m. Jeff Johnson handles play-by-play duties on KYMN.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg lost its season-opening game to Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Saturday 17-13 at Anderson-Nelson Field. Carleton also dropped its nonconference season-opener, falling 28-21 to Northwestern-Roseville at Roseville last Saturday.
SERIES: Carleton leads the all-time series 12-7, including 12-5 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won the last three games in a row over the Knights, a 52-7 home triumph in 1999, a 31-28 win at Northfield in 1998 and a 35-21 home win in 1997. Carleton's last win in the series was a 43-36 victory at Northfield in 1996.
LAST YEAR: Augsburg notched its biggest victory of the season, dispatching Carleton 52-7 on Oct. 30, 1999 at Anderson-Nelson Field. The 52 points marked just the fourth time in school history that Augsburg had scored 50 or more points in a single game, and the 45-point margin of victory was the most for an Augsburg team since a 53-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan in 1981.
Paul Tetzloff tied a school record by completing 12 straight passes in the first half, finishing 12-for-12 with two touchdowns and 184 yards passing before leaving the game midway through the second quarter, with the Auggies ahead 28-0. He also scored a rushing touchdown.
John Goodale relieved Tetzloff and finished with 140 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Mark Johnson caught four passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns, while
Brian Warden rushed for 154 yards on 26 carries. Jesse Anderson, making his first career start at quarterback for the Knights in relief of injured starter Jon Groteboer, threw for 156 yards and one score. Kyle Swartout rushed for 23 yards on eight carries to lead the Knights.
AUGGIES FALL IN FINAL MINUTE TO BLUGOLDS: Darrell Souhrada scored on a one-yard dive with 38 seconds to play, lifting Wisconsin-Eau Claire to a 17-13, come-from-behind victory over host Augsburg last Saturday. Souhrada's scoring dive came two-plays after Blugold quarterback Brian Rasmussen, on a fourth-down and 14 play at the Augsburg 35-yard line, completed a 33 yard pass to Chad Crutchley to put the ball at the Augsburg 2-yard line in the final minute of play.
Eau Claire's defense set the stage for the game-winning drive, stopping Augsburg on downs with 2:23 remaining at its own 35-yard line. Eau Claire scored the go-ahead touchdown 11 plays later.
Blugold quarterback Rasmussen completed 27 of 46 passes for 343 yards, including a 55-yard scoring strike to Jeremy Bergeron late in the second quarter, tying the game at 10-10. Souhrada led the Blugolds with 80 rushing yards on 27 carries. Crutchley caught 10 passes for 166 yards.
Despite being outgained by a 424-240 margin, Augsburg held a 13-10 lead for most of the fourth quarter, taking the lead on a 41-yard field goal by
Tim Mauseth (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) with 11:47 remaining.
Augsburg opened the scoring on its first drive, taking advantage of an interception by
Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS).
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) rumbled six yards for the touchdown with 12:27 remaining. A 20-yard field goal by Mauseth gave the Auggies a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Tetzloff completed 18 of 39 passes for 144 yards.
John Rotter (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) led the Auggies with 46 yards on seven receptions.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) paced the Auggie rushers with 85 yards on 21 carries.
"We were in a position to win the game with a minute left, and it was a game we let go away from us," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg. "It was a game we could have, and should have won, but we let it go."
There were some positives to take away from the game, Osberg noted. Augsburg was only penalized three times for 25 yards and lost the ball only twice (one interception, one fumble), both numbers that were low for a season-opening game. Plus, Eau Claire was playing its second game of the season, while Augsburg was in its first.
"It was probably the best opening game we've played; very few penalties, very few turnovers," said Osberg, who saw positives despite losing a season-opening game for the first time in his 10 years at Augsburg. "We played very well against an awfully good team that already had a game under their belt."
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg hopes to square its record at 1-1 and avoid going 0-2 to start the season for the first time since 1990. Augsburg has won its last three games in a row against Carleton, the last a 52-7 thrashing at Anderson-Nelson Field.
To accomplish the same this year will require a more solid offensive performance than the Auggies were able to muster against Wisconsin-Eau Claire last week. The Auggies could only put together 240 yards of total offense (96 rushing, 144 passing), and were only able to claim 15 first downs. Augsburg was 6 of 19 on third-down conversions and 0-2 on fourth downs last week.
"We have to improve our offense, especially our conditioning," Osberg said. "We need to gear up better on offense, get better conditioned late in the game and generally get a better rhythm offensively. We have to establish the run better, and our passing game has to continue to improve."
While giving up 420 yards to Eau Claire, Osberg saw some positives from the defense, which sacked the Blugold quarterback twice and forced two fumbles and an interception. The special teams also played one of the unit's best games in recent years, holding Eau Claire to just 54 return yards on the evening.
Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) shined in his first career start at cornerback, leading the Auggies with 10 tackles (eight solo) and notching an interception on the first drive of the game that led to Augsburg's lone touchdown.
Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), who moved from cornerback to free safety, also played well on Saturday, with nine tackles (seven solo) and two pass break-ups. Inside,
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.), who made a mid-season shift from linebacker to interior lineman last year, came up with two sacks.
KICKING BATTLE LOOMS: Often, quarterback controversies can dominate discussions around the football water cooler. At Augsburg, a battle for the kicking position is taking shape between senior
Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and junior transfer
Tim Mauseth (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS).
After backing up one of the top kickers in school history, Martin Hlinka, for two years, Van Alstine earned the starting kicker role last year and performed adequately, converting 17-of-22 extra points and hitting three field goals, including a 37-yarder.
But Van Alstine was forced to miss this year's season-opener last weekend because of a prior committment at a wedding. That opened the door for Mauseth, who transferred to Augsburg after playing at Wisconsin-River Falls last year. Mauseth connected on two of his three field-goal attempts, including a 41-yarder early in the fourth quarter that put Augsburg ahead 13-10. Last year for the Falcons, Mauseth connected on four field goals in six attempts, before his season ended after six games with an injury.
"Matt and Tim are both good kickers," Osberg said. "We will have to evaluate them this week and with this home game, where we can have them both dressed and ready to go. Hopefully, we'll be able to utilize both of them this week."
AUGGIES DOMINANT AT NIGHT, ON TURF: In addition to being the lone MIAC school (and one of just four in Minnesota) to have an artificial-turf playing surface for football, Augsburg is one of the few MIAC schools to play night games every season. Head coach
Jack Osberg has scheduled at least one night game (kickoffs starting after 4 p.m.) each year since 1992. The Auggies have a 10-6 record in night contests. At Anderson-Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 25-18 record since 1991. Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 28-45-1 at home. On artificial turf (including games at the Metrodome and Fargodome), Augsburg is 32-21 since 1991 and 35-52-1 since 1984.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Carleton coach Bob Sullivan has been waiting for this Knight team for several years -- the first time he has had a junior- and senior-dominated team since Carleton's MIAC championship season of 1992. However, the Knights started the 2000 campaign on a down note, with a 28-21, double-overtime loss at Northwestern-Roseville last Saturday.
The Knights put together a 302-yard offensive afternoon, but gave up 489 yards to the Eagles, who rallied twice to tie the game and send it to overtime. Neither team scored in the first extra session, but in the second, Northwestern put a touchdown on the board and Carleton couldn't answer when it had the ball. The Knights came close, when an apparent 14-yard touchdown pass from quraterback Jon Groteboer to diving receiver Brody Felchle was ruled incomplete.
Groteboer completed 11-of-23 passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns, despite playing against a gusty wind all afternoon. Carleton accumulated 174 rushing yards as a team, including Jon Hodgson's 74 yards on seven carries and Kyle Swartout's 57 yards on 21 rushes.
"We're just disappointed overall because we expected to win," Sullivan told the Northfield News newspaper. "We think we've got a good football team. How many games do you lose when you have a three-plus turnover ratio? We didn't turn the ball over once, and we also dominated the kicking game."
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg goes on the road for the first time this season next Saturday (9/23), traveling to St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., for a 1 p.m. battle at Clemens Stadium. Carleton will have its home opener next Saturday, hosting the University of St. Thomas, also at 1 p.m., at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn.
