Football 10/20/01 -- Gustavus 31, Augsburg 13
BOXSCORE
STORY FROM GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS SPORTS INFORMATION
ST. PETER, Minn. (10/20/01) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College football team jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and went on to claim a 31-13 win over Augsburg College in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Gustavus' Hollingsworth Field.
Quarterback Joe Thorvig completed 22-of-37 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gustie offense, while the Gustavus defense forced four turnovers and limited the Auggies to 254 yards of total offense and 13 points. Gustavus improves to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC, while Augsburg falls to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC.
The Gusties scored on all three of their possessions in the first quarter on their way to a 17-0 lead. Gustavus opened the scoring on its first drive when Curt Baldus hit a 35-yard field goal with 8:30 remaining. Augsburg turned the ball over two plays later, when Gustavus linebacker Dirk Erickson forced a fumble that Zach Zimmer recovered at the Augsburg 31-yard line. Gustavus extended its lead to 10-0 when Thorvig found Brett Boese in the end zone from 17 yards out, two plays later with 7:48 remaining. With 1:06 remaining in the first quarter, Thorvig hit Ryan Hoag with a 20-yard touchdown strike and the Gusties led 17-0.
Late in the second quarter, Augsburg defensive back Brett Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) intercepted a Thorvig pass and returned it 21 yards to the Gustavus seven-yard line. The Auggies got on the board two plays later when quarterback
Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.) found wide receiver
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) in the end zone from seven-yards out.
Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) added the extra point, which cut the Gustavus lead to 17-7.
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) blocked a Gustie field-goal attempt just before halftime.
Gustavus opened the second half the way it opened the game, with an impressive nine-play, 56-yard drive that ended with Adam Britz busting loose on a 21-yard touchdown run on a 4th-and-1 play. Baldus converted the extra point to make the score 24-7. Augsburg took the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards in nine plays with
Jamie Smith (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scoring on a 17-yard pass from Fransen. The extra point was no good, which cut the Gustavus lead to 24-13.
With the Gustavus offense struggling in the fourth quarter, Augsburg had multiple opportunities to get back into the game, however the Auggie offense turned the ball over three times in the final eight minutes of the game. The final turnover resulted in a Gustavus touchdown as strong safety Brad Arndt grabbed a Fransen aerial and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. Baldus added the extra point, which made the final score 31-13 in favor of Gustavus.
Gustavus compiled 324 yards of total offense in the contest, including 111 yards rushing and 213 passing. Jeff Pelant was the Gusties leading rusher with 10 carries for 54 yards and Hoag was the Gusties' leading receiver with six catches for 74 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Gustavus was led by linebacker Erickson, who totalled 13 tackles (nine solo) and forced two fumbles. Linebacker Brian Bergstrom also compiled 13 tackles, while Zach Zimmer contributed nine tackles and recovered two fumbles.
Augsburg was led offensively by quarterback Fransen, who completed 22-of-37 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) was the leading rusher with 15 carries for 61 yards, while Johnson was the leading receiver, with nine catches for 77 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Augsburg was led by defensive back
Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) with 12 tackles (eight solo). Defensive lineman
Joe Cullen (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) recorded seven tackles, including two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
Both teams return to action next Saturday (10/27) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Hamline at Edor Nelson Field, while Gustavus plays at St. Thomas.
Football 10/20/01 -- Augsburg at Gustavus Game Notes
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (3-3 overall, 3-2 MIAC) play at the Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties (4-2 overall, 3-2 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m., at Hollingsworth Field (3,500 capacity) in St. Peter, Minn.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg claimed a 50-14 home win over Macalester in Augsburg's Homecoming game last Saturday, while Gustavus dropped a 35-20 loss at St. John's on Saturday.
SERIES: This is the 59th meeting in the all-time series between Augsburg and Gustavus, a series the Gusties lead 46-12. The series started in 1926, Augsburg's first year of football, and the teams have played every year since 1956, with the exception of 1991, when the infamous Halloween blizzard caused a scheduled game at Gustavus to be cancelled. Gustavus has won the last three games in a row in the series.
LAST YEAR: Matt Gahlon caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Joe Thorvig in the second overtime, and Brad Arndt intercepted an Augsburg pass to win the game, giving Gustavus a 20-13, two-overtime victory over host Augsburg on Oct. 21, 2000 at Anderson-Nelson Field, spoiling Augsburg's Homecoming. Arndt's interception, off a tip by Kevin Firkus on an Auggie pass to the end zone on the first play of Augsburg's second overtime session, ended the game and gave the Gusties the win. The teams entered the overtime tied at 6-6. Augsburg had the ball first, and scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff to
Desman Oakley. In the Gusties' first overtime possession, the Auggie defense held firm and forced a fourth-down-and-10 play from the 13-yard line, but Thorvig was able to complete a scoring pass to Brett Boese, which forced the second extra session. Gustavus took the first possession of the second overtime and scored in four plays, converting a Thorvig-to-Gahlon 15-yard pass to the corner of the end zone for the score.
Augsburg led 3-0 at halftime on a
Matt Van Alstine 22-yard field goal. The Gusties tied the game on a 37-yard field goal by Christian White, and White's 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave the Gusties a 6-3 lead. Augsburg used a 13-play, 50-yard drive to tie the game, as Van Alstine converted a 35-yard field goal. In the final minute of regulation, Gustavus drove the ball 61 yards to the Augsburg 11-yard line, where it set up for a potential 28-yard, game-winning field goal by White. His kick, with six seconds remaining, was wide right, but the Auggies were penalized for running into the kicker, putting the ball at the Augsburg six-yard line with two seconds left. White's 23-yard field goal attempt also was wide right, forcing overtime.
The overtime game, Augsburg's fourth in the last four years since the NCAA instituted overtime in 1996, was the second two-overtime contest between the Auggies and
Gusties in history. In 1997, Augsburg and Gustavus played a two-overtime game in St. Peter, Minn., with Augsburg winning 41-35. Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 343-336 yardage margin, and Augsburg's 224 rushing yards was the most in a single game for the Auggies since a 253-yard rushing performance in a 56-22 win over Bethel on Nov. 7, 1997.
Brian Warden led all players with 132 carries on 25 rushes. Thorvig completed 27 of 47 passes for 253 yards. Boese had 97 receiving yards on five catches to led the Gusties, while Andy Traetow caught eight passes for 57 yards and Ryan Hoag caught five passes for 55 yards. Tetzloff completed 14 passes for 112 yards for the Auggies.
Mark Johnson had three catches for 34 yards to lead the Auggies. Brian Bergstrom had 19 tackles (11 solo) to lead the Gusties, while Andy Barnick had 14 tackles (11 solo) and Matt Dierks had 11 tackles (eight solo). Augsburg's defense was paced by
Shane Gunderson and
Joe Souba, who had 12 tackles apiece. Souba also had a sack, as did
Andy Howard and
Matt Chappuis.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: It's been an up-and-down season for Augsburg, to say the least. The Auggies have alternated winning and losing each week, with impressive wins over Carleton (52-21), St. Olaf (20-0) and Macalester (50-14) coupled with disappointing losses at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-14), against St. John's (48-14) and at St. Thoams (34-14). Which Auggie squad will show up on Saturday? That may decide the game.
Augsburg enters the game with the No. 3 defense, statistically, in the MIAC, averaging just 284.4 yards of total offense per game in league play, including the No. 2 defense in the conference against both the run (98.8 yards per game) and the pass (185.6 yards per game). On the other side of the ball, Augsburg's offense is ranked sixth in the league (350.2 yards per game), seventh in passing (187.0 yards per game) and fourth in rushing (163.2 yards per game) -- the most balanced offense, statistically, between the run and pass in the conference.
On offense, quarterback
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.), in his first season as the team's full-time starter, has continued to develop into a solid leader, averaging 164.5 yards passing per game, throwing 10 touchdowns and just eight interceptions so far. Meanwhile, the offensive line has been solid, allowing just 17 sacks. Auggie wide receivers have caught 11 touchdowns this season -- seven by
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.). He is averaging 91 receiving yards per game and enters the contest with 1,775 career receiving yards, fifth-best in school history (the record, 4,696, was set by Scott Hvistendahl from 1994-98). He has 93 career receptions in three seasons at Augsburg; he played his freshman year at South Dakota State.
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) has made a tremendous impact in a revamped Auggie backfield, with 357 rushing yards (66 carries) and six touchdowns. His rushing mate,
T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) has 309 yards on 77 carries and three rushing TDs (five overall).
Linebacker
Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) leads the team with 33 tackles (23 solo), while teammate
Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has 29.5 (16 solo). Defensive backs
Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) and
Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) have 28 (20 solo) and 27 (23 solo) tackles respectively. The Auggie defensive backfield has picked off nine passes, already more than last year's season total of eight. With two pickoffs last week,
Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) improved his season total to four; the single-season school record is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993.
The defensive line has claimed 17 sacks and 42 tackles for loss this year, led by
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), who has 7.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. His sack total is 6.5 away from the single-season school record of 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995.
Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has one sack this year, while
Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) has 2.0. Chappuis is currently third in school history in career sacks with 21.5; the career record is 28.5, set by Anderson from 1992-95, with Paul Moore (1994-97) second with 23.5 sacks.
AUGGIES TRIUMPH OVER MACALESTER:
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and host Augsburg put together 483 yards of total offense in dominating the action in a 50-14 victory over Macalester in Augsburg's Homecoming game last Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg used a balanced offensive attack -- 234 rushing yards and 249 passing yards -- to dominate virtually every category in the contest. Augsburg scored on four of its six first-half drives to build a 23-7 halftime advantage. With reserves in for most of the second half, the Auggies outscored the Scots 27-7, including 20 points in the third quarter. Augsburg had 20 first downs to Macalester's 28 and had 86 plays for 483 yards, compared to 63 plays for 266 yards for Macalester. Augsburg held the ball for more than 38 minutes, to just 21 minutes for Macalester. Augsburg also sacked Macalester quarterbacks five times and forced four turnovers -- three interceptions and one fumble recovery. Four of Augsburg's seven touchdowns were 26 yards or more.
The Auggies jumped on the Scots early, as Fransen completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) just 1:17 into the game. Johnson caught two passes for a game-high 95 yards.
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored the first of his two one-yard touchdown runs midway through the first quarter, and
Jamie Smith (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scored on a 26-yard pass from Fransen with 1:50 left in the half. The Auggies got the ball back just before halftime, and
Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the half.
The Auggies jumped on the scoreboard often in the second half, as Paul scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run,
Andy Matzke (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) scored his first career touchdown on a 40-yard punt return, and
Nate Moore (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Richfield HS) scored his first touchdown as an Auggie on a 52-yard run.
John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.), one of three Auggie quarterbacks used in the afternoon, threw a nine-yard scoring pass to
Jon Boeck (Jr., Braham, Minn.) early in the fourth quarter. Augsburg had incredible balance in the game, as 14 different players rushed the football and nine different players caught at least one pass in the game. Paul led the Auggies with 61 rushing yards on 13 carries, while Moore had 59 yards on two rushes and
T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) had 11 rushes for 50 yards.
Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) claimed two interceptions and broke up three passes to lead the Auggie defense.
Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the Auggies with 6.5 tackles (five solo), while
Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had 4.0 tackles apiece. Sherry had 1.5 sacks, giving him 8.5 sacks on the season, closing in on the school's single-season record of 14.
CLOSE SERIES OVER LAST DECADE: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg, in his 11th season as the Auggies' mentor, has the third-longest current tenure among MIAC coaches, with Bethel coach Steve Johnson (13 years) and St. John's coach John Gagliardi (49 years) ahead of him. In his 10 previous seasons, the Auggies have a 3-6 record against Gustavus, with the 1991 game cancelled on account of the Halloween blizzard. Augsburg has claimed wins in the past decade in 1993 (25-13 at Augsburg), 1995 (23-20 at Gustavus) and 1997 (41-35 at Gustavus in two overtimes). Gustavus has won the last three games in a row, a 21-7 win in 1998 at Gustavus; a 38-12 win at Augsburg in 1999, and the 20-13, two-overtime win last season at Augsburg.
With a 52-55 career record over 11 seasons, Osberg is closing in on the school's all-time win record of 56, set by Edor Nelson during a career that spanned 23 seasons (1947-59). Nelson was 58-118-10 in his Auggie coaching days. Augsburg has four games remaining this season, including Saturday's game at Gustavus.
PLAYING OVERTIME COMMON FOR AUGGIES AND GUSTIES: Since the NCAA's overtime rule was instituted in the 1996 season, Augsburg has played four overtime contests, the most of any MIAC school. Two have come against Gustavus, and both games went to two overtimes before deciding the action. The most recent was last year's Gustie win at Augsburg (referenced above). The first was one of the most storied games in Augsburg history, a 41-35 triumph at Gustavus on Oct. 18, 1997 in St. Peter, a game which lifted the Auggies into first place in the MIAC, en route to the school's first conference championship since 1928. Augsburg led 21-10 at halftime, but the Gusties rallied to take a 32-24 lead with 3:13 remaining in regulation, before Derrin Lamker found Scott Hvistendahl on a 65-yard touchdown pass with 2:14 left. Lamker then hit Ted Schultz for the two-point conversion, forcing overtime. In the first overtime, Gustavus scored first on a 27-yard field goal by Ryan Boutwell. However, Augsburg's Martin Hlinka hit a career-high 47-yard field goal to keep the game alive. In the second overtime, with Augsburg going first on offense, Lamker hit St. Peter native Andrew Anthony on a 13-yard touchdown pass, but the extra-point attempt was blocked. Gustavus worked the ball to the Augsburg 3-yard line, but a fourth-down pass was incomplete, giving the Auggies the incredible victory.
SCOUTING THE GUSTIES: Gustavus suffered its second loss of the season last Saturday, falling to St. John's 35-20 in Collegeville, Minn. The Gusties were slow out of the gate and trailed 28-0 at the half. Coach Jay Schoenebeck and his squad regrouped in the second half, outscoring the Johnnies 20-7, but the 28-point first half deficit was too much to overcome. The loss puts the Gusties title hopes in jeopardy as they now trail Bethel by two games with four left, however they are not mathematically eliminated and anything is possible in the wacky MIAC.
The offense rolled up 389 yards of total offense and scored 20 points against St. John's, but two turnovers and the inability to convert several key third-down conversions in the first half kept the Gusties from putting more points on the board. Quarterback Joe Thorvig, who played his first season at Augsburg before transferring to Gustavus, threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Andy Traetow amassed 241 yards of total offense (69 rushing, 118 receiving, and 54 in returns) and receiver Ryan Hoag caught seven passes for 102 yards. The defense again bent but did not break in allowing 533 yards of total offense but only three touchdowns. Linebacker Brian Bergstrom had a big day for the Gusties, as he recorded 20 tackles (9 solo, 11 assisted), including two for loss.
Through six games in league play, Gustavus ranks third in total offense in the MIAC, averaging 407.4 yards per game, while the defense is ranked sixth, allowing 369.2 yards per game. Individually, Gustavus is led on offense by the trio of quarterback Thorvig, running back Traetow and wide receiver Hoag. Thorvig ranks second in the league in total offense averaging 262.0 yards per game, while Traetow ranks first in all-purpose yards averaging 186.2 yards per game and third in rushing averaging 90.2 yards per game. Hoag ranks fourth in receiving yards per game at 98.2. Defensively, the Gusties are led by linebacker Bergstrom, who ranks second in tackles with 61 and linebacker Dirk Erickson, who ranks fourth with 59. Several Gusties will be chasing records down the stretch this season, including Traetow (all-purpose yards in a season), Hoag (TD catches in a season and receiving yards in a season), Thorvig (career completion percentage), Zach Zimmer (career punt returns), and Bergstrom (400 career tackles).

AUGGIES RETURN TO THE RADIO: Augsburg football has returned to the airwaves for the rest of the 2001 football season. Today's game is being broadcast live on WLKX-FM 95.9, "Spirit 95.9" of Forest Lake, Minn., with Auggie radio veterans Tom Witschen and Russ Bohaty on the call. All remaining Auggie games will be broadcast live on the station, which reaches well throughout the northern Twin Cities area. Witschen and Bohaty also broadcast the North Metro High School Football Game of the Week on Spirit 95.9 every Friday night.
