BOXSCORE

STORY FROM ST. THOMAS SPORTS INFORMATION

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/6/01) -- In his first college start, Justin Kostner (So., Arcadia, Wis.) rushed 31 times for 146 yards, including TD runs of 54 and 5 yards, and teammate Andrew Hilliard (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) caught three touchdown passes as the host University of St. Thomas scored a 34-14 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The Tommies (3-2 overall, 3-1 MIAC) scored three touchdowns shortly after Auggie turnovers and beat the Auggies (2-3, 2-2) for the 29th time in the last 31 meetings and 15th consecutive time in St. Paul.

St. Thomas outgained Augsburg 367-186 yards and won without three injured offensive starters, including ace running back Jake Barkley (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who ranks fourth in NCAA Division III in rushing at 173.5 ypg but sat out with a bruised knee.

After an Augsburg fumble on a punt return on the game's fifth play, Kostner dashed 54 yards for a TD on first down, and the PAT kick made it 7-0. The Auggies answered with a 10-play, 69-yard drive capped by T.J. Bramwell's (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) 10-yard run and PAT kick for a 7-7 tie.

Hilliard's 34-yard TD catch from quarterback Nick Ambrasas (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) with 42 seconds left in the first half capped a 14-play, 90-yard drive and let the Tommies take a 14-7 halftime lead.

The Tommies built a 27-7 lead in the third period on two more Hilliard TD catches that followed interceptions. UST's Rick Joslin (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) intercepted Auggie QB Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) on the first play from scrimmage in the second half and returned it to the Auggie 25. Five plays later, Ambrasas connected for an 8-yard TD pass.

Augsburg backup quarterback Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) was inserted, but he was picked off by UST's Bob Hannah (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), who returned the interception 36 yards to the Auggie 27. Six plays later, Ambrasas threw a 10-yard TD pass to Hilliard for a 27-7 lead.

The Auggies pulled within 27-14 with 14:16 to go on Bramwell's 12-yard reception from Fransen. But Kostner's 5-yard TD run with 5:08 capped an eight-play, 55-yard drive and iced the victory.

Ambrasas completed 16-of-30 passes with one interception for 206 yards and three TDs. Hilliard caught seven passes for 101 yards and Ryan Galindo (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) caught four passes for 43 yards.

On defense, the Tommies had four sacks, held Ausgburg to 1-for-11 on third-down conversions and just 52 yards passing. Along with his interception, Joslin was in on 11 tackles and John Kaiser (So., Mora, Minn.) and Andy Kaiser (Sr., Mora, Minn.) were each in on seven tackles.

The Auggies had four turnovers and were called for eight penalties for 107 yards. Bramwell rushed 11 times for 52 yards; Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) rushed 13 ties for 50 yards; and Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn;.) had four catches for 33 yards.

On defense, Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the Auggies with eight tackles (five solo), while Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had seven tackles (four solo) and Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had six tackles apiece. Peroutka added an interception with a 40-yard return. Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had one sack and three tackles for loss for the Auggies.

St. Thomas hosts St. Olaf next Saturday (10/13), while the Auggies return home to face Macalester. Both games are at 1 p.m.

Football 10/6/01 -- Augsburg at St. Thomas Game Notes

LAST WEEK: Augsburg claimed an impressive 20-0 win over previously unbeaten St. Olaf at home last Saturday, while St. Thomas fell short in a 27-21 loss to St. John's in the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the series between the two schools last Saturday in Collegeville, Minn.

SERIES: This is the 58th meeting in the all-time series between Augsburg and St. Thomas, a series the Tommies lead 47-8-2. The teams first met in 1928, a 6-6 tie. Augsburg and St. Thomas have met every year since 1952. Augsburg's last victory in the series came on Oct. 21, 1995, a 28-7 victory at Anderson-Nelson Field.

LAST YEAR: Jake Barkley rushed for 130 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, as St. Thomas cruised to a 16-0 victory over host Augsburg in the Auggies' homecoming game on Oct. 7, 2000 at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field. Barkley extended his streak of 100-yard rushing games to four with his performance, gaining 130 yards on 22 carries.

St. Thomas dominated the game, outgaining the Auggies 299 yards to 153. The Tommie defense held Augsburg to just five net yards of rushing in the game, while St. Thomas notched 196 rushing yards. The game was a sloppy one, as the teams combined for 25 penalties for 262 yards and had 12 fumbles, of which six were lost on turnovers (four by St. Thomas, two by Augsburg). Augsburg's offense was held in check for the entire game, as the Auggies were held to just one of 17 on third downs and could not convert on two fourth-down tries. Nick Ambrasas, making his first start at quarterback for the Tommies in 2000, threw for 103 yards, completing nine of 20 passes with one interception. Andrew Hilliard caught two passes for 51 yards, and Jon Learn had four catches for 39 yards.

Barkley scored his touchdown at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, and the Tommies held a 7-0 halftime lead. Early in the third quarter, Augsburg's Larry Lyden recovered a St. Thomas fumble at the Augsburg 1-yard line. But three plays later, Auggie quarterback Dave Fransen was sacked in the end zone by Sean O'Leary for a safety, giving the Tommies a 9-0 lead. Conor Casey blocked an Auggie punt in the fourth quarter, giving the Tommies the ball at the Augsburg 2-yard line. On the next play, Nick Whitehead rushed for a two-yard touchdown, securing the victory for the Tommies. Augsburg used two quarterbacks in the game, as regular starter Paul Tetzloff was forced to miss the game due to a groin injury. John Goodale, making his third career start, completed 10 of 19 passes for 97 yards. Fransen threw for 51 yards, completing five of 13 passes with one interception. John Rotter's 43 yards on four receptions led the Auggies. Rick Joslin had 12 tackles (seven solo) to lead the Tommie defense, while Jon Kaiser had 10 tackles (seven solo). O'Leary had eight tackles (four solo) and the third quarter sack for the safety. Matt Chappuis had 10 tackles (nine solo) to lead the Auggies, while Scott Archambault had eight tackles (six solo).

THE INJURY REPORT: Augsburg football received a stunning injury blow when senior strong safety Shane Gunderson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) was sidelined with a broken ankle during practice prior to the St. John's game. He is expected to miss between four to six weeks, depending on how the ankle heals, said head coach Jack Osberg. The only other significant loss to the Auggies for the Tommie game will be backup center Bob Eckstrom (Jr., Elk River, Minn.), who will miss the game due to a family wedding. Adam Hoffman (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) will be in the backup center role in Eckstrom's place.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg came up with one of its most impressive victories in the last several seasons, shutting out previously unbeaten St. Olaf 20-0 last Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. The win was Augsburg's first shutout victory since a 25-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome on Nov. 13, 1998, and the second shutout win over St. Olaf in the last five seasons. Augsburg blanked St. Olaf 42-0 on Sept. 27, 1997 at Augsburg.

Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) rushed for 131 yards (18 carries) and two touchdowns, scoring a 12-yard touchdown just before halftime and then weaving his way through the St. Olaf defense for a 47-yard score early in the third quarter. Augsburg rushed for 223 yards in the game. T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries, including a five-yard touchdown midway through the third period.

Augsburg scored its first touchdown just before halftime, when Rich Nelson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) recovered a fumbled punt return at the St. Olaf 38-yard line with 2:03 left in the half. A 26-yard pass from Auggie quarterback Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) to Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) put the ball at the Augsburg 12, and Paul did the rest with a 12-yard score with 14 seconds left. Paul scored his second touchdown at the 11:33 mark of the third quarter, as he meandered 47 yards on the first play of an Auggie drive. Cory Dingels blocked the extra-point attempt to make the score 13-0 in favor of the Auggies. Augsburg's next drive also resulted in a score, after Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) picked off a Senske pass at the St. Olaf 45. Seven plays later, Bramwell scored his third touchdown of the season on a five-yard rumble to cap the scoring for the Auggies.

Augsburg took advantage of six St. Olaf turnovers -- four fumbles and two interceptions -- and dominated virtually every offensive category. Augsburg held the ball for 36 minutes, 27 seconds compared to St. Olaf's 22:37. Augsburg had 22 first downs to St. Olaf's 11, and the Auggies had 90 plays to St. Olaf's 68. St. Olaf could only convert three of 17 third-down attempts and one of three fourth-down attempts, compared to Augsburg's nine-of-21 third-down conversions and one-of-four fourth-down conversions. In all, Augsburg outgained St. Olaf by a 378-193 margin.

Augsburg defenders sacked St. Olaf quarterback Brian Senske five times and limited the Ole offense to just 151 yards of passing and 42 rushing yards in the game. Manuel Spreigl, who had 199 yards and three touchdowns in last season's 28-6 win over Augsburg, was limited to just 31 rushing yards on 14 carries during Saturday's game. St. Olaf entered Augsburg territory on just eight of its 18 drives, but could only penetrate the "red zone" -- inside the Augsburg 20 -- just twice, turning the ball over on downs both times, once in the second quarter at the Augsburg 14 and the other in the third quarter on the Augsburg 21. St. Olaf also turned the ball over on downs in the closing minutes at the Augsburg 42.

Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) had two sacks and 3.5 sackles (one solo). Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with eight tackles (three solo) and a sack. Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) had six tackles (two solo), and Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) had 5.5 tackles (two solo) and an interception. Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) also had 5.5 tackles (three solo), including a tackle for loss. Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) led the Auggies with 59 receiving yards on five catches, while Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had 52 receiving yards on five catches. Fransen completed 19 of 39 passes for 155 yards and just one interception.

AUGGIES' WINLESS AT ST. THOMAS SINCE 1970: O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the venerable old home (since 1948) of the St. Thomas football program, has not been a friendly spot when Augsburg comes across the Mississippi River to face its closest (in travel distance) MIAC rival. In fact, the last time Augsburg won at St. Thomas was in 1966, a 7-0 Auggie win under longtime head coach Edor Nelson (1947-69). Augsburg was St. Thomas' first opponent in the stadium when it opened on Sept. 25, 1948, and the Tommies handed the Auggies a 33-0 shutout.

Since 1948, Augsburg has won just four games in 26 tries at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the last time coming in 1970, a 28-21 Auggie win. The 14-game, 29-year winless streak (dating to 1972) is the longest current road losing streak among MIAC opponents for the Auggies. All-time at St. Thomas since 1928, Augsburg is 4-26. Overall, St. Thomas has won 28 of the last 30 meetings with Augsburg, the last Auggie wins in the series both coming at Anderson-Nelson Field (now Edor Nelson Field), a 28-7 win in 1995 and a 37-7 win in 1992.

Augsburg came closest to breaking the long streak the last time the two teams played at St. Thomas, on Oct. 24, 1998. St. Thomas senior tight end Chris Chappuis -- brother of current Auggie defensive lineman Matt Chappuis -- caught an 18-yard pass from Greg Kaiser and the subsequent two-point conversion in the second overtime as the Tommies overcame a 28-21 overtime deficit to rally past the Auggies 29-28. Augsburg overcame a 21-3 second-quarter deficit with 28 straight points, including a game-tying one-yard run by Paul Tetzloff -- his second rushing touchdown of the day -- and a two-point conversion pass from Tetzloff to Tim Hamer. The Auggies stopped the Toms on downs in the first overtime but missed a chance to win as Martin Hlinka's 9-yard field goal went wide left. Tetzloff and Hamer connected on a touchdown in Augsburg's half of the second overtime, with Martin Hlinka making the extra point. The Toms came back with the ball at the Auggie 25 and completed two passes, with Chappuis breaking two tackles after his catch to reach the end zone. Instead of going for a kick to try to tie, the Toms went for two and Kaiser hooked up again with Chappuis for the winning two-point score.

The 1998 game featured a couple of milestones, as St. Thomas tied an NCAA record with a 99-yard touchdown pass from Kaiser to Mark Warder in the second period. Auggie wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl went over the 4,000 mark in career receiving yardage, en route to his then-NCAA all-divisions record of 4,696 career yards, a record that has since been broken.

JACK OSBERG'S TOMMIE RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg, in his 11th season as the Auggies' mentor, has the third-longest current tenure among MIAC coaches, with Bethel coach Steve Johnson (13 years) and St. John's coach John Gagliardi (49 years) ahead of him. In his 10 previous seasons, the Auggies have a 2-8 record against St. Thomas, with the Auggies' wins coming both at home in 1992 (37-7) and 1995 (28-7). The Tommies were the lone MIAC team to beat Augsburg during the Auggies' 1997 MIAC championship season (28-12 at St. Thomas).

SCOUTING THE TOMMIES: Like Augsburg, it's been an up-and-down season for the University of St. Thomas, which enters Saturday's game with an identical record to Augsburg -- 2-2 overall, 2-1 in the MIAC. Last Saturday, St. Thomas won the statistical battle but lost the war with a 27-21 loss at St. John's, in a game marking the 100th anniversary of the all-time series between the two schools. A trick play for a 62-yard TD, a key interception return and a bad snap on a punt helped the Johnnies build a 27-7 lead and they held on to top St. Thomas 27-21 before a standing-room only crown at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville.

The Tommies outgained SJU in total offense, 406-228 yards, including 188 rushing yards by Jake Barkley on 36 carries. But their comeback fell short in the final minutes. Barkley, who is fourth in the NCAA Division III in rushing average (173.5 yards per carry), now has surpassed 100 yards in 12 of his last 13 games.

The Tommies took the opening kickoff and drove 55 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead. But SJU scored the next four TDs, turning a 20-7 halftime lead into a 27-7 cushion early in the third period. The first Johnnie TD came on a 62-yard halfback pass. An interception return and penalty gave the Johnnies the ball on the UST 11-yard line and set up another Johnnie TD. A bad snap on a punt let SJU takeover on the Tommie 30 and set up another TD.

The Tommies scored in the third period and early in the fourth to pull within 27-21. They later had 1st-and 10 at the SJU 28 with 5:00 to play, but a drive stalled and the Johnnies stopped them on four plays. UST was set to get one last possession in the final 2:00 when SJU's Charlie Carr boomed a 70-yard punt that rolled dead at the UST 6-yard-line. The Toms drove some but had a 13-yard completion to midfield negated by a penalty. A 4th-down pass was intercepted near midfield to end the last Tommie bid.

UST junior QB Nick Ambrasas completed 19-of-39 passes for 247 yards and two TDs with two picked off. Andrew Hilliard caught six passes for 79 yards. On defense, Matt Meunier picked off his third pass of the season and John Kaiser also had a pickoff. Andy Kaiser had a sack and 10 tackles to lead the Toms.

THE INJURY BUG FOR ST. THOMAS: The Tommies enter Saturday's game with Augsburg facing the injury bug, especially on the offensive and defensive lines. Andy Kaiser, normally a defensive tackle, will play both ways, on the defensive and offensive lines, and will change his number from his usual 96 to 76. Defensive end Johnny Allen will also play both ways, on defense and as an offensive guard. He will switch numbers form 33 to 69. Starting center Brock Norman is doubtful with an injury, with left guard Justin Wallick likely moving from left guard to center. However, Wallick's backup, John Kolnick, will miss the game due to injury.

CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Through three conference games, St. Thomas leads the MIAC in rushing average per-game, with a 211.7-yard average. However, Augsburg's rush defense is third-best in the MIAC, averaging opponents just 80.7 rushing yards per game. The Tommies have passed for an average of 245.7 yards per game, second-best in the league, while Augsburg has allowed 182.3 passing yards per game, third-best in the conference. St. Thomas is second in the conference in total offense, at 457.3 yards per game, while Augsburg is second in the league in total defnse, at 263.0 yards per game.

On the other side of the football, Augsburg is averaging 360.7 yards of total offense per game, sixth-best in the conference, while St. Thomas' defense is the best, statistically, in the league, averaging just 262.0 opponent yards per game. St. Thomas is second in the conference defensively against both the run (80.0 yards per game) and the pass (182.0), while Augsburg's offense is sixth-best in the conference in passing (211.3 yards per game) and fourth-best in rushing (149.3 yards per game).

AUGGIES RETURN TO THE RADIO: Augsburg football has returned to the airwaves for the rest of the 2001 football season. Today's game is being broadcast live on WLKX-FM 95.9, "Spirit 95.9" of Forest Lake, Minn., with Auggie radio veterans Tom Witschen and Russ Bohaty on the call. All remaining Auggie games will be broadcast live on the station, which reaches well throughout the northern Twin Cities area. Witschen and Bohaty also broadcast the North Metro High School Football Game of the Week on Spirit 95.9 every Friday night.

If you live in an area where you can't hear the station, you can still listen to the games on your computer. Set your Internet browser to Augsburg's official athletic webpage -- www.augsburg.edu/athletics/ -- and click on the "Live Audio" link. Thanks to Augsburg's arrangement with www.sportsjuice.com, you will be able to hear selected Auggie sporting events, including the football season, around the world on the Internet.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts Macalester in Augsburg's Homecoming game next Saturday (10/13) at 1 p.m., at Edor Nelson Field. St. Thomas hosts St. Olaf for the Tommies' Homecoming game next Saturday at 1 p.m., at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
