MINNEAPOLIS (11/22/01) -- Augsburg College, winners of the last two NCAA Division III wrestling national titles and seven of the last 11 national crowns, opened its dual-meet season with a bang, shutting out Division II Minnesota State University-Moorhead 42-0 in a dual meet Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
The Auggies, ranked No. 1 in the preseason Division III national rankings, notched two pins, two technical falls and two major decisions en route to the convincing win in their first dual meet of the season. MSU-Moorhead drops to 1-1 on the year.
Against Divisions II and III opponents, Augsburg is now 150-7 since the 1989-90 season, and has lost just two matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) rallied from a 5-2 third-period deficit to score an escape, takedown and pin with three seconds left in his 165-pound match against Luke Duffy (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska). Abbott is ranked second in the nation at 165 in the preseason Division III national rankings.
Scott Revier (So., Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) scored the other pin of the night for the Auggies, with a quick takedown and pin in 2:02 at heavyweight over Moorhead's Brad Ackerman (Sr., Litchfield, Minn.).
Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) moved to 4-0 on the season with a technical fall, 17-0 win at 174 pounds. Slack, now 88-11 on his career, has lost just one match over the past two-plus seasons. A 2000 national champion and 2001 national runner-up, Slack is rated No. 1 in the nation at 174.
Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), rated sixth in the nation at 157 pounds, scored an 18-2 technical fall victory for the Auggies.
Bryan Miller (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville HS), ranked sixth in the country at 131, and
Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.), ranked second in the nation at 141, both scored major decisions.
The closest match of the evening came at 125, when Augsburg's Clint Strom (Fr., St. Croix Falls, Wis.), rallied from a 4-2 deficit and held on for his first collegiate victory, an 8-6 win over MSU-Moorhead's Perry Kuntz (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.). Strom was wrestling in place of Augsburg's defending national champion,
Darin Bertram * (Sr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), who sat out the meet with an injury suffered in last weekend's Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open.
In White Team (Junior Varsity) action, Augsburg claimed a 32-12 win over Itasca Community College of Grand Rapids, Minn.
Joe Kunisher (So., Ham Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS, 174 pounds) and
Clint Hodgdon (Fr., Ostrander, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander HS, 184 pounds) claimed pins for the Auggies, with
Clarke Athman (Fr., St. Joseph, Minn./Athman Home School) notching a technical fall at 157.
Augsburg returns to action on Dec. 1, competing at the Minnesota-Morris Cougar Open. The Auggies' next dual meet will be on Dec. 4, hosting Southwest State University at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. MSU-Moorhead returns to action on Dec. 1 in competition at the St. John's University Terry Haws Duals in Collegeville, Minn.
