Auggies stay unbeaten, blitz St. Scholastica 90-72!

MINNEAPOLIS (11/24/01) -- Dwayne Starr (So., Richfield, Minn.) had 19 points, four assists and two steals, one of four Augsburg College players scoring in double figures, as the host Auggies cruised to a 90-72 win over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Jay Howard (So., Burnsville, Minn.) had a double-double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds, along with three blocked shots, as Augsburg remained unbeaten at 3-0. St. Scholastica drops to 0-4 overall.

Outscoring the Saints 26-9 over the first nine minutes of play, Augsburg was able to put a handle on the game early. The Auggies led by as many as 29 points in the second half (74-45 with 9:03 remaining) and the lead never dipped below 14 points the rest of the way.

Adam Kotewa (Jr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) had 15 points for the Auggies, while Josh Natzel (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had 14 points, five assists and two steals. Nick Peters (Jr., St. Peter, Minn./Nicollet HS) had seven points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

St. Scholastica was led by Jeremy Grev (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Scott Johnson (Fr., North Branch, Minn.), who had 12 points apiece. Matt Schiller (Fr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) had nine points, and Andy Thelander (Jr., North Branch, Minn.) and Danny Nyberg (Fr., Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell-Wright HS) had eight points each.

The game was a physical one, as 57 fouls were called between the two teams (31 for St. Scholastica, 26 for Augsburg). Augsburg connected on 36-of-47 free throws (76.6 percent) in the game, while St. Scholastica hit 21 of its 34 free throws (61.8 percent).

Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (11/27), playing a nonconference game at Crown College (St. Bonifacious, Minn.) at 7:30 p.m. St. Scholastica hosts Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
