Concordia ends Augsburg season with 33-3 decision at Metrodome

Football 11/9/01 -- Concordia at Augsburg, Friday, 1 p.m. (Metrodome)

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (11/9/01) -- Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn./BDRSH HS) threw three touchdown passes and Concordia College-Moorhead picked off four Augsburg College passes, as the Cobbers cruised to a 33-3, season-ending victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Hebrink completed eight of his 10 passes for 99 yards, but three were for touchdowns -- two to Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS), as the Cobbers finished their season at 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC. Augsburg ended its season at 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers outgained the Auggies by a 376-247 margin, putting together 277 yards of rushing on 57 carries in the contest.

Meanwhile, Concordia's defense claimed four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown and two which set up Cobber scores. In the final three games of the season, Augsburg turned the ball over 19 times -- 13 interceptions and six fumbles.

The game appeared to be a close one early, as a 12-play, 58-yard Cobber drive ended at the Augsburg 2-yard line on a fumble. Augsburg then drove 73 yards on 16 plays, ending the drive with a career-best 42-yard field goal by Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS).

However, after that, the game was all Cobbers. Concordia scored its first touchdown on a 51-yard run up the middle by Jeremy Hinderks (So., Renville, Minn./BDRSH HS). The Cobbers took advantage of an interception off of Auggie starting quarterback Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), but a field-goal attempt was blocked by Matt Chappuis (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.). However, on the next play, Goodale threw another interception, and six plays later, Hebrink threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Jake Olson (Jr., Crookston, Minn.).

Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) replaced Goodale at quarterback in the second half, but two plays into the second half, his pass was picked off by Concordia's Travis Olson (Sr., Hawley, Minn.), who returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.

An 11-play, 72-yards drive later in the quarter resulted in another Cobber score, an 8-yard pass from Hebrink to Hertel, and an eight-play, 67-yard drive to start the fourth quarter ended in another scoring hookup from Hebrink to Hertel, this time from 19 yards.

Hertel gained 50 yards on five receptions to lead the Cobbers. Concordia's top-ranked rushing offense continued its dominance, with five ballcarriers gaining 30 yards or more, led by Robert Clark's (So., Seeley Lake, Mont./Seeley-Swan HS) 97 yards on 11 carrles. Joel Ferrie (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) gained 64 yards on 13 carries, and Hebrink had 57 yards on 17 carries. Hinderks carired the ball five times for 54 yards, and Jon Doebler (Sr., Warroad, Minn.) had 30 yards on eight carries.

Goodale threw for 119 yards to lead Augsburg's three quarterbacks in the game. Fransen completed just three of nine passes for 18 yards, and John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) completed five of nine passes for 44 yards.

Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) led Augsburg's offense with 100 receiving yards on five catches. He ended his three-year Auggie career (he played his freshman season at South Dakota State) with 2,147 receiving yards, third-best in school history and just the third Auggie to accumulate more than 2,000 career receiving yards. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) led Auggie rushers with 49 yards on eight carries.

Four different Cobbers had interceptions -- Olson's touchdown, Shane Satterlee (Jr., Litchfield, Minn.), Adam Bakker (Sr., Walker, Minn./W-H-A HS) and Jordan Talge (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.). Ben Holm (Sr., Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County HS) led Auggie defenders with 6.0 tackles (two solo), while Derek Fischer (So., Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) and Satterlee had 4.5 tackles apiece. Jonathan Huber (Fr., Bismarck, N.D./Century HS) had 1.5 sacks.

Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had 6.5 tackles (five solo) two sacks for the Auggies, giving him 13.5 sacks on the season, the second-most in a single season in school history. The record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. He ended up with 24 career sacks, the second-most in school history. Anderson's 28.5 (1992-95) is the record.

Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had 6.0 tackles (four solo) and Chappuis had 5.5 tackles (three solo), a blocked kick, forced fumble and pass deflection.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg fell 31-0 at Bethel last Saturday, while Concordia, playing at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., were defeated 28-14 by St. John's last Saturday.

SERIES: This is the 59th meeting in the all-time series between Augsburg and Concordia, a series the Cobbers lead 44-12-2. The series started in 1926, Augsburg's first year of football, and the teams have played every year since 1953. In the past 10 seasons under Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg, the Auggies have a 5-6 record against Concordia, including an NCAA Division III playoff game in the Fargodome in 1997. Augsburg has won four of the last five games in the series, though the Cobbers won last year's game, at the Metrodome, 37-13.

AUGSBURG'S FINAL "HOME" GAME IS AT METRODOME: Augsburg's last "home" game of the season against Concordia is at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, and can be purchased from Gate D at the Metrodome (southeast corner) on the day of the game. There will be no advance ticket sales. NO AUGSBURG PASSES ARE ACCEPTED (INCLUDING FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS); ONLY MIAC PASSES WILL BE HONORED.

A fan bus is being offered to take Auggie fans to the Metrodome. The free bus will leave from in front of Si Melby Hall at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, and will pick up fans from the Loading Dock area (below Gate D) at 4:15 p.m.

The Augsburg-Concordia game was moved to the Metrodome because of previous schedule commitments for the air-supported dome structure -- known on campus as "the Bubble" -- that covers Edor Nelson Field during the winter months. The Bubble was installed and inflated on Sunday (10/28). The Bubble is used extensively by groups both on- and off-campus, including indoor soccer leagues, golf driving range training, etc.

The Auggies and Cobbers will be the only MIAC teams playing at the Metrodome this season, because of scheduling conflicts at the Metrodome. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) will hold its five-game Metrodome event on Friday and Saturday with two games scheduled after Augsburg's contest with Concordia -- Minnesota State-Moorhead against Northern State (S.D.) at 5:30 p.m., and Concordia-St. Paul against Southwest State at 9 p.m. The NSIC will have three games on Saturday (11/10).

Augsburg is playing its 15th game in school history at the Metrodome, and the 16th game played indoors (one game against Concordia was played at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., in the 1997 NCAA Division III playoffs). The Auggies are 6-8 all-time at the Metrodome and 7-8 all-time indoors. This is the fifth meeting between Augsburg and Concordia in the Metrodome and sixth indoors; Augsburg is 2-2 against Concordia at the Metrodome and 3-2 against the Cobbers indoors.
3 On artificial turf fields, including dome stadiums and Augsburg's own Edor Nelson Field (since 1984), Augsburg is 36-26 since 1991 and 39-57-1 all-time (since 1983).

LAST YEAR: Scoring 28 points in the second quarter to rally from a 7-0 deficit, Concordia cruised to a 37-13 victory over Augsburgon Nov. 4, 2000 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Down 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Cobbers pulled away with four touchdowns in the second period, scoring on each of its drives after holding Augsburg to three plays and a punt on each of its drives. Josh Oien rushed for a 21-yard score, followed by a Jason Braaten two-yard run. Quarterback Jeff Hertel threw two touchdown passes to complete the second-quarter scoring burst -- a 16-yard pass to Adam Strainer and a 50-yard strike to Raleigh Schmidt with 37 seconds left in the half.

Augsburg struggled offensively most of the afternoon, turning the ball over three times (twice on interceptions, once on a fumble), while converting just five of 18 third downs and one of three fourth downs. The Auggies could only muster a 21-yard scoring pass from Paul Tetzloff to Mark Johnson late in the first quarter. Tetzloff threw for just 64 yards, completing only four of 21 passes while being sacked six times, before being replaced in the third quarter by Dave Fransen. He found Johnson on an 81-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth quarter. However, on the extra-point attempt, Matt Palmen blocked the kick and returned it to the Augsburg 45, where he latereled it to Mike Schwab, who returned it the rest of the way for a two-point defensive extra point. It was the first defensive extra point ever scored against Augsburg. Robert Clark returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards, which set up the Cobbers' final score of the day, a one-yard scoring plunge by Len Crouse with 7:18 remaining.

Hertel led the Cobbers with 135 yards passing. Oien had 65 rushing yards and Crouse added 47 for Concordia. Schmidt's 67 receiving yards on three receptions was the team lead. Johnson led all players with 152 receiving yards for the Auggies on four catches, including the 81-yard strike from Fransen. Fransen threw for 139 yards. Joel Vettleson had nine tackles (eight solo) and an interception to lead the Cobbers. Derek Flann and Mark Hankel had seven tackles apiece. Brent Peroutka had nine tackles (eight solo) to lead the Auggies, while Joe Souba had eight tackles (five solo) and Larry Lyden had seven tackles (six solo).

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: It's been an up-and-down season for Augsburg, to say the least. But Augsburg can close out the season on a high note with a win over Concordia. If the Auggies win, they would finish 5-5, which would mark the seventh .500-or better season in the last nine under head coach Jack Osberg.

Osberg enter's Friday's game, the final contest of his 11th season at the Auggie helm, with a 53-57 career record, just three wins away from Augsburg's coaching record of 56 wins, set by legendary coach Edor Nelson (56-118-10) from 1947-69 (23 seasons).

Augsburg enters the game with the No. 3 defense and the No. 7 offense, statistically, in the MIAC, averaging 312.2 yards of total offense and 271.6 yards of total defense per game in league play. Augsburg has the No. 3 defense against the rush (94.6 yards per game) and No. 2 defense against the pass (177.0 yards per game) in league play, while the Auggies have the fifth-best rushing offense (132.6 yards per game) and seventh-best passing offense (179.6 yards per game).

On the other side of the football, Concordia has the third-best offense in the league, averaging 406.5 yards per game in MIAC play. The Cobbers have the top rushing attack (250.9 yards per game) and eighth-best passing attack (155.6). On defense, Concordia is seventh in the MIAC (377.6 yards per game), averaging 136.4 yards against the run (fourth) and 241.2 yards against the pass (10th).

The game may be decided on the ground, where the two teams feature four of the top 10 rushers in the MIAC. Ryan Hebrink and Joel Ferrie are No. 5 and 6 in the league, respectively, in rushing yards per game for the Cobbers (72.2 yards and 67.1 yards per game, respectively), while Augsburg's Ben Paul is eighth (60.5 yards per game) and T.J. Bramwell is 10th (47.6 yards per game) in the conference in rushing yardage per game.

AUGGIES TURN BALL OVER EIGHT TIMES IN 31-0 LOSS AT BETHEL: Taking advantage of eight Augsburg turnovers, Bethel cruised to a 31-0 victory last Saturday afternoon at Bethel's Armstrong Stadium. Bethel defenders picked off seven Augsburg passes, returning two for touchdowns. The Auggies also lost the ball once on a fumble. In the last two games, Augsburg has turned the ball over 15 times.

Bethel's defense was the key to the victory. Senior linebacker Ben Kidd returned a 66-yard interception for a touchdown late in the third quarter, and junior strong safety Sam Lacy returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Senior cornerback Nate Klint intercepted two Augsburg passes. Bethel allowed just 27 Augsburg rushing yards.

Augsburg used three quarterbacks, but none were effective, passing for a combined 136 yards, while falling victim to three sacks and seven interceptions. Starter Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) completed just eight of 21 passes for 52 yards and four pickoffs, while reliever Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) completed five of nine passes for 80 yards but was picked off twice. John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) played most of the fourth quarter. Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) caught eight passes for a game-high 97 yards for the Auggies. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) led Auggie rushers with 29 yards on 15 carries.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bethel took a 19-0 lead in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by freshman running back Jesse Dick and a 42-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Scott Kirchoff to junior receiver Joel Olson. Bethel's offense, led by Kirchoff, produced 243 passing yards, with Olson catching six passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Augsburg's defense limited the Royals' offense, which entered the game third in the nation in total offense per game at 513.4 yards per game, to just 298 yards of total offense on Saturday, including just 55 rushing yards. Mike Johnson's 28 rushing yards on 18 carries led the Royals.

Defensively, Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) had 7.5 tackles each (six solo each), with Matt Chappuis (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) adding 6.5 tackles each. Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had three sacks for the Auggies, giving him 11.5 sacks on the season, the second-most in a single season in school history. The record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and Brandon Fox (So., Sanborn, Minn./Springfield HS) also had sacks.

RECORD WATCHING: Several Augsburg football players are in pursuit of spots on the school's single-season and career record lists going into the final game of the season.

Wide receiver Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) is averaging 90.9 receiving yards per game and enters Friday's game with 818 receiving yards this season, fourth-best in a single season in school history. His 52 receptions are the sixth-best in a single season. He has 2,047 career receiving yards, third-best in school history (the record, 4,696, was set by Scott Hvistendahl from 1994-98). Jeff Kaeppe's 2,273 yards (1991-94) is second on the career list. Johnson has 118 career receptions in three seasons at Augsburg; he played his freshman year at South Dakota State. His 20 career receiving touchdowns are third-best in school history, and his nine TD catches this year are fifth-best. Johnson is currently fourth in the conference in receptions per game (6.00) and receiving yardage per game (93.0 yards in league play).

Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has five interceptions this year; the single-season school record is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993. Peroutka has 11 career interceptions, the fourth-most in school history. Jeremy Dalluge's 17 (1992-95) is the school record.

Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), has 11.5 sacks this seaon, the second-most in a single year in school history. The record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. His sack total -- all in MIAC play -- is second-best in the conference this season. Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) is currently third in school history in career sacks with 22.5; the career record is 28.5, set by Anderson from 1992-95, with Paul Moore (1994-97) second with 23.5 sacks. Sherry has 22 sacks in his career, fourth-best in school history.

FINAL AUGGIE GAME FOR 15 SENIORS: On Friday, 15 Augsburg seniors are playing their final football games of their careers. The seniors were honored during the Hamline game two weeks ago. As a group, the Auggie senior class has a record of 19-20 entering Friday's game.

Seniors are: Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), son of Keith and Sharon Archambault; Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), son of Nancy and Larry Chappuis; John Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), son of Mickey and Shari Goodale; Shane Gunderson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), son of Olaf Gunderson and Linda Mitchell; Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), son of Jo and Jim Johnson; Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), son of Karen and Larry Lyden; Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), son of Dave and Pam Mauseth; Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), son of Mike and Paula Peroutka; Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS), son of Laura and Randy Krug; Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), son of Scott and Kathy Berg; Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS), son of Gary and Cindy Theisen; Chad Thorp (Sr., New Prague, Minn.), son of Tim and Laurie Thorp; Brandon Ward (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS), son of Mike and Patti Ward; Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa), son of Marv and Barb Wittrock; and Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), son of Bud Wright and Kathy Purras.

SCOUTING THE COBBERS: Concordia head coach Terry Horan has faced the daunting task of replacing Cobber coaching legend Jim Christopherson, who retired last year after 32 years at the helm. Horan is only the third coach that Concordia has employed in the last 60 years. He has inherited a team that, like Augsburg, has had a hot-and-cold season, entering Friday's game with a 4-5 overall mark and 3-5 MIAC mark.

Last week, the Cobbers got a preview of playing indoors by traveling to the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., to host MIAC leader St. John's. Concordia drew first blood, but St. John's countered with 28 straight points and won the pivotal game 28-14. The Cobbers were unable to shut down the high powered Johnnie passing attack, allowing 392 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Concordia opened the scoring in the first quarter when Robert Clark (So., Seeley Lake, Mont.) turned a harmless run into a 35-yard scoring scamper. St. John's proceeded to rattle off 28 straight points before Concordia brought the game to within 14 with six minutes to go in the final quarter. Cobber quarterback Ryan Hebrink (So, Sacred Heart, Minn.) scrambled in from six yards out for the TD that kept Concordia's hopes for an upset alive.

After a Cobber defensive stop, the offense drove the ball to the Johnnie 10 yard line but turned the ball over on downs when Hebrink's fourth down pass to Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) fell just yards short. Clark led the Cobber rushing attack as he gained 85 yards on 11 carries. Hebrink ran for 51 yards and threw for 160. Hertel hauled in six catches for 77 yards.

AUGGIES RETURN TO THE RADIO: Augsburg football has returned to the airwaves for the rest of the 2001 football season. Today's game is being broadcast live on WLKX-FM 95.9, "Spirit 95.9" of Forest Lake, Minn., with Auggie radio veterans Tom Witschen and Russ Bohaty on the call. All remaining Auggie games will be broadcast live on the station, which reaches well throughout the northern Twin Cities area. Witschen and Bohaty also broadcast the North Metro High School Football Game of the Week on Spirit 95.9 every Friday night.

If you live in an area where you can't hear the station, you can still listen to the games on your computer. Set your Internet browser to Augsburg's official athletic webpage -- www.augsburg.edu/athletics/ -- and click on the "Live Audio" link. Thanks to Augsburg's arrangement with www.sportsjuice.com, you will be able to hear selected Auggie sporting events, including the football season, around the world on the Internet.
