Wrestling 12/4/01 -- Augsburg 38, Southwest State 3
MINNEAPOLIS (12/4/01) -- Augsburg College used two pins, two technical falls and a major decision to claim its 14th straight dual-meet win over Southwest State University, cruising to a 38-3 triumph in a nonconference wrestling match Tuesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

The Auggies improved to 2-0 in dual meets this season in the quick match, lasting just one hour and 10 minutes. Augsburg is the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III national poll, two-time defending national champions and winners of seven of the last 11 Division III national crowns.

Southwest State, a Division II team, drops to 2-4 in dual meets. The Mustangs entered the match ranked 16th in the latest NCAA Division II national poll.

Augsburg improved to 15-3 all-time against Southwest State, a series competed every season since 1984-85. Against Divisions II and III opponents, Augsburg is now 151-7 since the 1989-90 season, and has lost just two matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.

Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), ranked third in the nation at 165 pounds, scored a first-period pin to improve to 7-1 on the year, while Mike Cuperus (Jr., Worthington, Minn.), ranked third in the country at 184 pounds, needed just 54 seconds to claim a pin victory.

Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) moved to 7-0 on the season with a second-period technical fall, 16-0 win at 174 pounds. Slack, now 91-11 on his career, has lost just one match over the past two-plus seasons. A 2000 national champion and 2001 national runner-up, Slack is rated No. 1 in the nation at 174.

Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.), ranked second in the nation at 141 pounds and a national runner-up last season, claimed an 18-2, third-period technical fall win. He is now 8-0 on the season.

Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) improved to a team-leading 10-0 with a major decision victory at 157 pounds. He is ranked sixth nationally.

Augsburg's Mark Matzek (Fr., Ellsworth, Wis.) scored his first college varsity victory with a 4-3 win over Josh Soupir (So., Montevideo, Minn.) at 133 pounds. Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn.) had the other Auggie win, a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds over Cody Kummer (Sr., Watford City, N.D.).

Southwest State's lone win of the night came in the first match, an 11-4 win for Mark Simmonds (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) over Augsburg's Scott Revier (So., Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) at heavyweight. Simmonds claimed his team-best fifth win of the year to improve to 5-1 overall.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (12/8), with the varsity competing at the St. Cloud State Invitational and the White Team (junior varsity) competing at the Dick Walker Invitational at Wartburg (Iowa). Both meets begin at 9 a.m. Southwest State will also compete at the St. Cloud State Invitational on Saturday.
