FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/18/01) --
Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had four hits, including two home runs and seven RBI, leading Augsburg College to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Massachusetts-Boston in its first doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex.
Krautkremer's grand-slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game gave the Auggies the first-game victory, as the Auggies had to rally twice for the win. His two-run homer in the second inning of the second game gave the Auggies a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
In all, Auggie batters hit five home runs in the doubleheader sweep. Augsburg had only nine homers all season last year. Augsburg improved to 8-4 with the sweep, eclipsing last season's six-victory mark (6-29). UMass-Boston drops to 2-2 overall.
Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit a three-run homer and
Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) hit a two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning for the Auggies in the first game, and
Pat Knafla (Fr., Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had a solo homer in the third inning of the second game.
Augsburg put on a hitting show in the doubleheader, with 12 hits in the first game and 16 in the second. Five Auggies had multiple-hit games in the first contest, while six Auggies did the same in the second contest.
Marsh had four hits, including a 3-for-6 performance with four RBI in the second game.
Adam Dittrich (Sr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had two hits in each game, as did
Mike Schwalen (Sr.., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) and Krautkremer. Schwalen had three RBI in the first game, as did Knafla. Storholm added wo doubles to his home run, driving in four runs in the first game and one in the second.
Five pitchers threw in the first game for the Auggies, with
Nic Shelby (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) scoring the win in relief.
Nick Rathmann (So., Waseca, Minn.) pitched a complete-game victory in the second game for the Auggies, striking out four while walking four.
Adam Waxman (So., Portland, Maine) had four hits in the doubleheader to lead the Beacons, including a two-run homer in the second game. Matt Tapley (Jr., Pelham, N.H.) had two hits and a three-run homer in the first game. Ed Stish (Fr., West Hazelton, Pa.) had two hits in the first game, and Matt Thayer (So., West Tisbury, Mass.) had three hits in the second game, with Jim McDonough (Jr., Hingham, Mass.) adding two hits, including a double.
Augsburg returns to Gene Cusic Classic action on Tuesday (3/20) in Fort Myers with two single games, facing Franklin Pierce College (N.H.) and Mid-America Nazarene College (Kansas). UMass-Boston plays St. John's (Minn.) on Monday (3/19) in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers.
