FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/01) --
Mike Schwalen (Sr.., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) had six hits in nine at-bats in the doubleheader, and
Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, as Augsburg College split a doubleheader with Coe College (Iowa) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Wednesday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex's Terry Park.
Coe won the first game by a 5-4 mark, but Augsburg claimed an 11-5 win in the second contest to improve to 10-6 on the season.
Sherry hit a grand-slam home run -- Augsburg's second of the game and third in the spring trip to Florida -- as part of a six-run sixth inning that gave the Auggies the lead to stay. It was the first of back-to-back home runs for the Auggies, as
Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) followed Sherry's homer with a solo blast. Sherry also ha a run-scoring single and run-scoring double in the game.
Augsburg opened the second contest with a six-run first inning, highlighted by a grand-slam homer by
Ben Wilson (So., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS). The Auggies also claimed run-scoring doubles from
Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.).
Russ Bauer (So., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jared Lynch (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) combined for the pitching performance, with Bauer moving to 3-0 with the win, striking out three. Lynch also struck out three in relief.
Coe was paced by Tim Vinyard, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the seventh. Mike Fong took the loss for the Kohawks, striking out three. Leo Melish pitched in relief.
The first game was highlighted by Schwalen's 4-for-4 performance at the plate, with a double and a run scored.
Augsburg led the game by a 4-3 count after five innings, keyed by a two-run second inning and two-run fifth inning.
Joe Holman (So., Springfield, Minn.) had two RBI, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Frank Huebner (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) also had two hits, going 2-for-3, and Storholm had a double and scored a run.
However, the Kohawks took the lead in the seventh, scoring two runs off of Auggie pitcher
Joe Pontrelli (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) on a two-run homer by Chad Driscoll.
James Nelson picked up the pitching in for Coe, striking out one. Kyle Bassett claimed the save. Pontrelli struck out three in a complete-game, losing effort.
Augsburg returns to Gene Cusic Classic action on Thursday (3/22) in Fort Myers with a doubleheader against Messiah College (Pa.).
