FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/22/01) --
Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit two home runs and went 5-for-6 at the plate, leading Augsburg College in a nonconference doubleheader split with Messiah College (Pa.) in action at the Gene Cusic Classic Thursday afternoon at Terry Park.
The Auggies won the first game 9-0, but dropped the second game 17-7 to move to 11-7 on the season. Augsburg has one more doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic, facing Calvin College (Mich.) on Friday (3/23).
Storholm hit a solo home run in the third inning of the first game, then knocked another solo homer to open the fourth inning, as Augsburg attempted to rally from an 8-2 third-inning deficit.
The Auggies scored in five of their six innings at the plate in the first game, collecting five extra-base hits in the process.
Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had a solo home run, while Storholm and
Sammy Gross (So., Springfield, Minn.) added run-scoring doubles.
Mike Schwalen (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) had a triple in going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Adam Dittrich (Sr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Storholm went 2-for-3.
The first game also featured a dominating pitching performance by
Adam Jensen (Fr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), who pitched a complete-game shutout for his first victory of the season. Jensen struck out three Messiah hitters and did not walk a batter, allowing just three hits.
In the second game, however, Messiah was dominant at the plate, stroking 22 hits off of five Auggie pitchers. The big blow came in the third inning, when Messiah sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on nine hits.
Messiah also had a five-run fifth inning and a three-run sixth to put the game out of reach. Eric Gaumer went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI; Derek Price had two doubles in going 3-for-4 with three RBI; and Phillip Brown, Mark Anselmo and Bradley Mease each stroked run-scoring doubles. Anselmo went 3-for-5 at the plate and Mease went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two driven in.
Augsburg was able to claim 11 hits in the game, three from Storholm in going 3-for-3 with a solo homer. He scored three runs.
Ben Wilson (So., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had two doubles and drove in three runs, and
Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 2-for-4, scoring a run.
Five Auggies pitched in the game, with starter
Blake Chaffee (Fr., Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) taking the loss, allowing seven runs in just over two innings of work. Eric Mindrebo struck out five Auggies and walked just one to pick up the win for Messiah.
