STORY FROM ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY SPORTS INFORMATION
WINONA Minn. (4/10/01) -- Eric Williamson (St. Charles, Minn.) and Cory Kanz (Oronoco, Minn.) each pitched complete games as the Saint Mary's University baseball team opened its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with back-to-back victories over Augsburg College Tuesday afternoon at Max Molock Field.

Williamson tossed a four-hitter as the Cardinals shutout the Auggies 7-0 in the first game, while Kanz came back with seven-hitter in beating Augsburg 7-3 in the nightcap.

While Williamson and Kanz were working their magic, the Cardinals' bats were busy feasting on the Auggies' pitching. Jamie Nowaczewski (St. Paul, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.), Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.), and Brad Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) all chipped in two hits in three at-bats as SMU collected 11 hits in the Game 1 win.

Williamson gave up two of his four hits to lead off the first inning. From there, however, the sophomore was virtually untouchable, allowing single hits in the fourth and seventh innings, while not walking a batter and striking out five.

The Cardinals scored a solo run in the second on an RBI single by Kimlinger, then added two more in the third on a two-out, two-run home run by McMahon. SMU (4-2 overall, 2-0 MIAC) put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth, with Nowaczewski driving in a pair of runs with a single.

Augsburg was limited to just four hits in the first game, all singles. Only two Auggie runners reached as far as third base in the game.

Nick Rathmann (So., Waseca, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Auggies in the first game, despite striking out five Cardinals.

Kimlinger continued to swing the hot bat in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Joe Duda (Rochester, Minn.) went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs.

After spotting the Auggies (0-2 MIAC, 14-10 overall) a 2-0 first-inning lead, the Cardinals took the lead for good in the bottom of the first, scoring four times -- one on an RBI double by Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.), the second on a grounder by Duda, and the final two on Kimlinger's one-out double.

SMU added two runs in the third on an RBI double by Huegel and an Augsburg error, then closed out its scoring with a solo run in the fourth on Duda's bases-loaded walk.

Mike Schwalen (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) and Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had run-scoring singles for the Auggies in the first inning, with Joe Holman (So., Springfield, Minn.) driving in the last run in the seventh. Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS), Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) and Frank Huebner (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) had doubles for the Auggies.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a doubleheader at St. John's University on Saturday (4/14) at 1 p.m. St. Mary's hosts Luther College (Iowa) in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday (4/11) at 2:30 p.m.
