ST. CLOUD, Minn. (4/18/01) -- Derek Dormanen (So., Menahga, Minn.) pitched seven strong innings of work to pick up the win in the first game, then hit a two-run homer to key an offensive outburst in the second contest, as Concordia College-Moorhead claimed a sweep of Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Dick Putz Field.

The Cobbers won the first game 6-3 in eight innings, then blitzed the Auggies 14-2 in the second contest to improve to 7-4 overall, 6-2 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 15-13 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Auggies have lost four of their last five contests. Wednesday's doubleheader was played in St. Cloud due to the unavailability of Augsburg's home field, Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.

Dormanen struck out 11 Auggies while walking none and allowing only five hits in seven innings of work in the first contest to claim the victory on the mound.

The Cobbers claimed the win with three runs in the first extra inning, as scoring on a fielder's choice by Raleigh Schmidt (Jr., Tracy, Minn.) and a two-run single by Tim Miller (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). Jeremy Hinderks (Fr., Renville, Minn./RCW HS) pitched in relief in the eighth to pick up the save, allowing just one walk.

Concordia put two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning, keying on consecutive doubles by Jesse Rostad (Sr., Barnesville, Minn.) and Chad Festul (Jr., Morris, Minn.) and a run-scoring single by Dormanen. Augsburg tied the game on a two-run homer by Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) in the Auggies' half of the first.

An Isaac Hjermstad (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.) double drove in Dormanen with the go-ahead run for Concordia in the third inning, but the Auggies tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Adam Dittrich (Sr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS).

Nick Rathmann (So., Waseca, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, pitching a complete-game effort and striking out five.

Rostad went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Cobbers, while Dormanen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Cobbers poured on the hits in the second contest, shelling 14 hits off of five Auggie pitchers, while also taking advantage of five Auggie errors, as four Cobber runs were unearned.

Concordia sent 10 hitters to the plate in the first inning, scoring five runs. A two-run double by Hjermstad was the big hit in the frame. The Cobbers added four more runs in the third, as Schmidt notched a two-run double.

Five more runs came across in the next two innings, as Dormanen socked his two-run homer and Ben Kvidt (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Matt Nustad (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had run-scoring sacrifice flies.

Augsburg could manage just two runs in the fourth, both runs coming in on RBI doubles by Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and Dittrich.

Hjermstad went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Cobbers in the second contest, while Felstul went 2-for-5 and Dormanen went 2-for-2 with two RBI and four runs scored. Sherry's 2-for-3 performance led the Auggies.

Bryan Marudas (So., Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) picked up the pitching win with five innings of effective work, with Jason Phillips (Sr., Fargo, N.D./Shanley HS) pitching in relief. Matt Topp (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies.

One long hitting streak ended while another was extended for Augsburg. Storholm saw his consecutive-game hitting streak end at 17 games with a hitless second game, while Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had his streak extended to 15 straight games with singles in both contests.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action with a doubleheader at defending national runner-up St. Thomas on Saturday (4/21) at 1 p.m. Concordia has a doubleheader at Gustavus on Saturday at 12 noon.
