MINNEAPOLIS (4/25/01) --
Matt Topp (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) struck out five hitters in recording a complete-game pitching triumph for host Augsburg College in the first game, while Brad Mazer (Jr., Orono, Minn.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI to pace Gustavus Adolphus College to a second-game victory, as the Auggies and Gusties split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
Augsburg won the first game 4-1, while Gustavus took the second by a 10-3 count. The Auggies moved to 16-16 overall and 2-8 in MIAC play with the split, while Gustavus moved to 14-11 overall and 6-4 in MIAC play.
Topp struck out five Gusties and did not allow a Gustie run until the sixth inning to pick up his third win of the season in the first contest.
Augsburg used a big fourth inning to claim the first victory, taking advantage of a run-scoring double by
Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.), RBI singles by
Ben Wilson (So., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and
Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and a run-scoring fielder's choice by
Nick Rathmann (So., Waseca, Minn.). Marsh ended up with two hits on the afternoon to lead the Auggies.
The Gusties' run came on sixth-inning double by Mike Anderson (Fr., Marshall, Minn.), driving in Erick Hoberg (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.). Anderson went 2-for-3 for the Gusties, while Tyler Vrieze (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) also had a double.
A big inning also produced the second-game win for Gustavus, as the Gusties sent 10 hitters to the plate and notched seven runs in the third inning. A double by Bobby Dennis (So., Lakeville, Minn.) drove in a run, followed by a run-scoring triple by Brad Mazer (Jr., Orono, Minn.). Hoberg added an RBI single and Joe Thorvig (Jr., Stacy, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. The Gusties also scored on an Auggie fielding error, balk and a wild pitch in the frame.
Mazer ended up going 3-for-3 with two runs scoreed and two RBI to lead the Gusties. He added a double in the fourth inning and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Bryant Rogness (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.), Hoberg and Tom Ramy (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Gusties, with Hoberg and Ramy each driving in a run.
Mike Fritz (So., Woodbury, Minn.) claimed the pitching win for the Gusties, pitching five strong innings and allowing only six hits and one run. Augsburg starter Rathmann allowed seven runs -- five earned -- in just two-plus innings of work to take the loss for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (4/26) with another home MIAC doubleheader, hosting St. Olaf at 2:30 p.m. at Parade Stadium. Gustavus travels to Winona, Minn., to face St. Mary's in a MIAC doubleheader, also on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
