Auggies split at Hamline, winning 13-1, losing 5-3.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/28/01) -- Mike Schwalen (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead Augsburg College in the first game, while Jack Rowan went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Hamline University in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Midway Stadium.

Visiting Augsburg won the first game 13-1, while Hamline won the second game 5-3 to force the split. The Auggies moved to 17-19 overall and 3-11 in MIAC play, while Hamline moved to 11-11 overall and 7-7 in the MIAC.

Augsburg pounded out 15 hits, including five extra-base hits, to claim the first victory. Every Auggie starter had at least one base hit in the contest.

Schwalen pounded out run-scoring singles in the first, fifth and seventh innings, adding a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the third, to lead the Auggies. He also scored twice. Meanwhile, Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two doubles, driving in a run and scoring three times. Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice.

Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) notched a two-run homer in a four-run first inning, as the Auggies took a quick lead. The Auggies sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, plating five runs, and capped the scoring with a three-run seventh inning.

Joe Pontrelli (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) claimed his first collegiate victory on the mound for the Auggies, striking out six Pipers in a complete-game effort. He allowed just seven hits and one walk.

Hamline plated its lone run in the seventh, as Adam Friedman drove in Andy Meyer on a two-out single. Nate Damann had two hits to lead the Pipers.

In the second game, the teams scored seven of their eight runs in the first inning, as Hamline took a 4-3 advantage.

The Auggies scored their three runs in the first inning, as Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) drove in a run reaching base on a fielding error, and Sammy Gross (So., Springfield, Minn.) plated two runs on a single.

But the Pipers rallied back with four runs in their half of the frame, as Troy Urdahl drove in two runs on a triple, and run-scoring doubles by Brian Julson and Rowan completed the damage against Auggie starter Adam Jensen (Fr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS). A run-scoring single by Doug Amsden in the sixth inning capped the scoring for the Pipers.

Rowan's three hits, including two doubles, led the way for the Pipers, while Amsden and Urdahl had two hits apiece.

Marsh went 2-for-4 to pace the Auggies, with Storholm adding a double.

Nathan Erickson pitched a complete-game victory for the Pipers, striking out three while walking just one.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (5/2) at 2:30 p.m. with a MIAC doubleheader at Carleton (Dundas, Minn.). Hamline travels to Gustavus for a MIAC doubleheader, also on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
