STEVENS POINT, Wis. (4/7/01) -- Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) drove in five runs and had a three-run homer, and Mike Schwalen (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) went 5-for-10 at the plate to lead the Augsburg College offensive attack, while Nic Shelby (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) pitched complete-game victories to lead the Auggies to a sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference doubleheader at UWSP's University Field on Saturday afternoon.

Augsburg won the first game 8-7 in eight innings, while claiming the second contest 11-10 to improve to 14-8 on the season. Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which entered the game ranked No. 29 in the ABCA Division III national poll and fifth in the Midwest Region poll, drops to 13-6 overall. The Pointers have lost three games in a row after a 12-1 stretch of games.

Trailing 5-4 entering the seventh inning, the Auggies scored three runs to take an 7-5 lead, behind a run-scoring single by Schwalen and sacrifice flies by Krautkremer and Sherry. The Pointers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, on a two-run double by Ryan Jones (Fr., Eau Claire, Wis./North HS).

But after four straight walks -- despite a runner picked off of second -- to open the eighth, Adam Dittrich (Sr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Sammy Gross (So., Springfield, Minn.) with the eventual game-winning run. Shelby pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning to score the victory.

Schwalen went 3-for-5 in the first game, while Krautkremer went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) scored twice. Shelby struck out one and allowed just six hits to pick up the complete-game pitching win.

Sam Molski (Sr., Stevens Point, Wis.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Kevin Fry (So., Helenville, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran HS) had a two-run homer in the first contest for the Pointers. Mike McCann (Sr., Antigo, Wis.) scored two runs.

Sherry and Ben Wilson (So., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had home runs for the Auggies in the second game, as the Auggies held the lead most of the way in the back-and-forth contest. Wilson hit a three-run homer in the third inning, and Sherry had a solo homer in the fourth inning.

With the game tied 8-8 in the sixth inning, Augsburg scored three runs to take an 11-8 lead, as Sherry drove in a run on a single and Rich Storholm (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) drove in two runs on a double.

However, Stevens Point scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh -- one on a homer by Pat McCann (Sr., Antigo, Wis.) and one on a double by Paul Molitor (Jr., Reedsburg, Wis.) -- before stranding the bases loaded, the final out coming on a strikeout.

Augsburg pitcher Krautkremer allowed 11 hits in a complete-game effort, but the Pointers stranded seven runners in the game. Krautkremer struck out three Pointers while walking only four. Just seven of his 10 runs allowed were earned.

Augsburg had four doubles -- from Marsh, Krautkremer, Sherry and Storholm. Schwalen went 2-for-5 with two runs scorer, while Sherry went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Storholm went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
