DUNDAS, Minn. (5/2/01) -- Carleton College slugged 12 hits to pummel Augsburg College 13-5 in the first half of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
Nick Rathmann (So., Waseca, Minn.) pitched a five-hit shutout to lead the Auggies (17-20, 3-12 MIAC) to a 7-0 victory over the host Knights (4-29, 2-14 MIAC) in the nightcap.
The Auggies scored one run in the first inning of the first game, but the Knights answered with a five-run second inning. Rob Holden (Jr., Crystal, Minn.) knocked in the first Carleton run of the game by singling to left with runners on first and third. A walk loaded the bases for Xander Meadow (So., Chicago, Ill.), who squeezed the run in from third with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. Two more runner scored when the third baseman misplayed Nate Flaherty's (Fr., Oakdale, Minn.) hard grounder. Flaherty advanced to second on the error, and Erik Miller (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) knocked him in with a single to left.
The Auggies came back with three runs in the fifth inning.
Mike Schwalen h(Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) it a leadoff homer, and
Ryan Krautkremer (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) hit a two-run homer two batters later. The Knights sealed their victory, however, with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame. The first two hitters made outs, but the Knights used six hits and two walks to deal the death blow.
Chris Pierce (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo.) earned the victory for the Knights, scattering seven hits and striking out four on his way to the complete game victory. Five Knights had two hits.
Matt Topp (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies. He pitched two innings and gave up five hits and five runs.
Augsburg came out hard in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning, including a leadoff homer by
Pat Marsh (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). They never looked back, as they racked up 14 hits on their way to the shutout. Rathman scattered five hits, struck out four, and walked none to earn the complete game victory. Marsh led the way at the plate for the Auggies, going three for four with one RBI.
Tony LePage (So., Duluth, Minn.) took the loss for the Knights. Holden led Carleton at the plate, netting two hits in two chances.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (5/5) at 1 p.m., hosting Bethel in a MIAC doubleheader at Parade Stadium. Carleton returns to action on Sunday (5/6) when the Knights travel to St. John's University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
