Football 9/15/01 -- Augsburg at Carleton, Saturday, 1 p.m.
BOXSCORE
STORY FROM CARLETON COLLEGE SPORTS INFORMATION
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/15/01) --
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) tied a school record for Augsburg College with four touchdown receptions, including three for 40 yards or more, as the Auggies rolled over Carleton College 52-21 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
At the beginning of the game, the crowd at Carleton's Laird Stadium observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the East Coast. Carleton football players Andrew Wild (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and David Macauley (So., Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) also sung the national anthem.
When the game started, though, it was all Augsburg. The Auggies had three touchdowns in first eight minutes and scored on their first six drives, rolling up 202 yards of total offense in the first 15 minutes to improve to 1-1 overall. Carleton remained winless at 0-2.
Augsburg relied on a stifling defense that held the Knights to nine yards on five first-quarter drives. The Auggies converted all five of their fourth-down conversions.
Field position also was a factor in the early going. Three miscues on punts by Carleton resulted in Augsburg starting four drives on Carleton's side of the field.
The Auggies amassed 444 total yards to Carleton's 269. Johnson ended up with eight catches for 227 yards. His four touchdown receptions tied a single-game school record set twice before, by Karl Sneider in a 1996 game against Macalester and by Scott Hvistendahl in a 1998 game against Mayville State (N.D.)
Quarterback
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.), making just his second collegiate start, looked sharp, completing 16 of 22 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns, one off the school single-game record of six, set by Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against St. Olaf. He completed his first seven straight passes to start the game.
Augsburg opened the scoring on its third play from scrimmage, when Fransen found Johnson on a 47-yard scoring strike. After a Carleton punt was blocked by
Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.), the Auggies scored one play later, when
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) found the end zone on a seven-yard run.
Augsburg's next drive of the first quarter was capped when Fransen found Johnson in the corner of the end zone on a 24-yard fade pattern on fourth-down and five. Another pretty pass from Fransen to Johnson, this time for 40 yards, gave the Auggies a 28-0 first-quarter cushion.
Augsburg scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter, both from
T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.), who scored on a 10-yard rush and a five-yard pass from Fransen.
Augsburg spread around the ball on the ground and gained 177 yards, with nine different Auggies handling the ball.
Chris Boyer's (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) 40 yards on seven carries led the Auggies.
An interception by Issac Kieffer (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) on Augsburg's 40 yard-line gave the Knights an opportunity to get on the scoreboard, with a two-yard touchdown run by Robert Von Glahn (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall HS) to make the score 42-7 at the half.
Augsburg added a 29-yard field goal from
Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) and a 41-yard pass from Fransen to Johnson in the third quarter to push the lead up to 52-7. Mauseth hit his seventh PAT of the game to tie a single-game school record, and the touchdown pushed Augsburg over 50 points for only the fourth time in school history. The previous record of seven was set by
Matt Van Alstine in the last 50-point game for the Auggies, a 52-7 win over Carleton on Oct. 30, 1999. Augsburg's single-game scoring record is 56 points, set in a 1997 win over Bethel.
The Knights came back quickly with a three-play drive which was capped off with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Jon Groteboer (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) to Steve Nuessle (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). Groteboer scrambled for another touchdown to end the scoring.
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) picked up two sacks for the Auggie defense.
Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) led the Auggies with 5.5 tackles (five solo), while
Andy Stephenson (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had 4.5 tackles (four solo).
Scott O'Reilly (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) did it all for the Knights on the defensive end, picking up a sack, and interception, and 12 total tackles, including nine solo. Defensive lineman Jake Hodgson (Appleton, Wis./West HS) recorded 10.5 tackles and linebacker Wild racked up nine tackles and a sack.
Von Glahn picked up 68 yards on 14 carries and picked up his third touchdown of the year. Groteboer threw for 180 yards on 17 of 32 passing and a touchdown. Groteboer passed Tim Nielson for fifth place on Carleton's all-time passing yards 3,882 yards Nuessle caught three balls for 70 yards to lead the Knights' receiving corps.
Carleton will look for its first win of the season at University of St. Thomas next Saturday (9/22) at 1 p.m., and Augsburg will host St. John's University. The 1 p.m. Augsburg game will mark the rededication of Edor Nelson Field, Augsburg's outdoor athletic field.

9/15/01 -- Augsburg at Carleton Game Notes
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (0-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) play at the Carleton College Knights (0-1 overall, 0-0 WIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m., at Laird Stadium (7,500 capacity) in Northfield, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 11th season and currently has a 49-53 career mark. Carleton head coach Chris Brann (West Virginia Wesleyan '91) is in his first season of collegiate coaching and is 0-1.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season. Carleton radio will be on KYMN-AM 1080, with Jeff Johnson on the call. Carleton's broadcast is also available on its athletic website at this address: http://www.carleton.edu/campus/athletics/Audio/index.html.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg opened its season with a 37-14 loss at Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Saturday, while Carleton opened its season with a 29-20 home loss to Northwestern-Roseville.
SERIES: Carleton leads the all-time series 12-8, though the Auggies have won the last four games in a row in the series. Augsburg and Carleton first met in 1978, when Carleton was still a member of the Midwest Conference; Augsburg and Carleton have played each season since the Knights rejoined the MIAC in 1983.
LAST YEAR:
Brian Warden scored three touchdowns and accumulated 133 yards of total offense to lead Augsburg to a 24-15 win in last season's game on Sept. 16, 2000 at Anderson-Nelson Field. Warden had 27 rushes for 93 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards to lead the Auggies to the victory. He scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half as Augsburg built a 21-7 halftime lead. He had scoring rushes of 1 and 5 yards, and an 11-yard touchdown reception from
Paul Tetzloff. Tetzloff completed 20 of 34 passes for 243 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the contest. Augsburg dominated action from start to finish, with 82 offensive plays to Carleton's 54. Augsburg had a time-of-possession edge of 39 minutes, 52 seconds to Carleton's 20:08, and Augsburg outgained Carleton by a 366-257 yardage margin. Tight end
Ryan Hupka led the Auggies in receiving, with 54 yards on three receptions. In all, five Auggies had 40 or more yards of receiving in the contest.
Mark Johnson had five receptions for 47 yards. Carleton quarterback Jon Groteboer completed 17 of 35 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown, a 9-yard toss to Dan Reider late in the game. Reider caught eight passes for 96 yards to lead the Knights. Kyle Swartout had Carleton's other score, a one-yard run late in the first half. Swartout had 50 yards rushing in the game.
QB SHUFFLE DUE TO INJURY: Senior quarterback
Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), who was expected to start the season as the Auggies' top signal-caller, was sidelined due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the team's intrasquad preseason scrimmage. Head coach
Jack Osberg said that Goodale is likely to miss at least the first two games of the season. Junior
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) got the start in place of Goodale in Augsburg's season-opening loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Saturday, completing just 9 of 23 passes for 117 yards, with two interceptions and one touchdown pass. Fellow junior
John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) will back up Fransen at quarterback. Fransen saw spot action in four games as one of three Auggie quarterbacks to see varsity snaps in 2000.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg opened its 2001 season on a losing note, falling flat in a 37-14 defeat at Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Saturday. The Blugolds scored the first 30 points of the game, not allowing an Augsburg score until the final seven minutes of the game. The Blugolds outgained the Auggies, 430-188, and controlled the ball for 34:06 of playing time to 25:54 for Augsburg.
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored his first collegiate touchdown on a two-yard rush with 6:53 left, and
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) in the closing minute.
Paul's 53 yards on nine carries led the Auggies, while Johnson caught 4 passes for 74 yards. Fransen completed just nine of 23 passes for 117 yards, and was picked off twice and sacked six times.
Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) led the Auggies with 13.5 tackles (12 solo), while
Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) had 7.5 tackles (6 solo).
Shane Gunderson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) each had a pass interception for the Auggie defense.
OSBERG IS 4-6 IN CONFERENCE-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has led a resurrection of Augsburg football since being hired as head coach before the 1991 season. In those 10 previous seasons, Augsburg has won four of its 10 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference openers, including the last three league lid-lifters in a row. This will be the second straight year Augsburg and Carleton have opened the conference season playing each other; the MIAC operates on a two-year schedule rotation, with the 2001 season the second year of the rotation. With a 49-52 career record, Osberg has the second-most wins in Augsburg football history; Edor Nelson, who coached from 1947-69, has the most wins, 56 (56-118-10 overall).
Jack Osberg's MIAC-opening games:
Sept. 14, 1991 at St. Olaf; St. Olaf 35, Augsburg 13
Sept. 19, 1992 at Augsburg; St. John's 58, Augsburg 0
Sept. 18, 1993 at St. John's; St. John's 54, Augsburg 7
Sept. 17, 1994 at Concordia-Moorhead; Augsburg 13, Concordia-Moorhead 3
Sept. 16, 1995 at Augsburg; Concordia-Moorhead 38, Augsburg 6
Sept. 14, 1996 at Augsburg; St. Thomas 23, Augsburg 9
Sept. 21, 1997 at St. Thomas; St. Thomas 28, Augsburg 12
Sept. 19, 1998 at Augsburg; Augsburg 24, Hamline 14
Sept. 18, 1999 at Hamline; Augsburg 15, Hamline 10
Sept. 16, 2000 at Augsburg, Augsburg 24, Carleton 15
AUGSBURG'S RECORD IN NORTHFIELD: Since Carleton rejoined the MIAC in 1983, Augsburg has played 18 contests in Northfield, Minn., home of both Carleton and St. Olaf colleges. In those games, Augsburg is 3-15. However, Augsburg has won two of the last three games played in Northfield over the past three seasons -- a first-ever road sweep in Northfield in 1998, when the Auggies beat St. Olaf 31-24 and Carleton 31-28. Since the all-time series between Augsburg and Carleton began in 1978, Augsburg has won just two of the 10 contests played at Laird Stadium, a 28-7 win in 1978 and the 1998 triumph. Augsburg and St. Olaf play each other on Sept. 29 at Augsburg.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Carleton begins a new era of football, as first-year coach Chris Brann steps into the Carleton coaching shoes filled for 22 years by the retiring Bob Sullivan. And while the Knights' roster numbers just 49 athletes, Brann is confident that a new offensive scheme -- the West Coast offense -- and the return of veteran quarterback Jon Groteboer (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) will help to lift the Knights' spirits. That confidence jelled on the first play of Carleton's game against defending National Christian College Athletic Association champion Northwestern-Roseville last Saturday, when Groteboer found Jesse Anderson (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) with a 45-yard bomb on the first play of the game. Carleton capped that drive with a one-yard run by Robert Von Glahn (Sr., Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall HS) to take a 6-0 lead. But the visiting Eagles scored the next 22 points of the game to take a 22-6 advantage into the third quarter, a lead they would never relinquish en route to a 29-20 win. In his first collegiate start, Von Glahn ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while Groteboer completed 15 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a score. The Knight defense was paced by Scott O'Reilly (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), who had nine tackles, including two for a loss. Andrew Wild (So., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) had eight tackles, including a sack.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts St. John's University in the Auggies' home opener next Saturday (9/22) at 1 p.m. The game will mark the rededication of Edor Nelson Field. Carleton takes to the road for the first time next Saturday, playing at St. Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m. at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
