Football 9/22/01 -- St. John's at Augsburg, Saturday, 1 p.m.
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (9/22/01) -- Drew Gibson (Sr., Winona, Minn./Cotter HS) caught three touchdown passes and St. John's University quarterbacks threw for five touchdowns Saturday, as the Johnnies gained their first victory of the season with a 48-14 triumph over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at Edor Nelson Field.
Both teams moved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. St. John's, which now leads the all-time series 54-7-2, has won 20 of the last 22 games in the series.
The game marked the rededication of Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field, renamed in honor of the legendary former coach of the Auggies (1947-69), but the visitors from St. John's spoiled the Auggies celebration. Playing in a thunderstorm and a strong wind from the east, the Johnnies put together 327 yards of total offense, compared to just 260 for Augsburg.
Gibson caught touchdown passes of 26, nine and 12 yards, two in the second quarter and one in the third, as the Johnnies built a halftime lead o 34-7 and a third-quarter advantage of 41-7.
Augsburg turned the ball over three times, had two punts blocked -- both by St. John's Brad Beyer (Sr., Utica, Minn./Winona Cotter HS) -- and were forced to punt nine times in the game. The Auggies had just 260 yards of total offense, though the hosts held the time-of-possession advantage by nearly four minutes.
St. John's scored on five of their nine first-half drives. Zach McBroom (Sr., Mora, Minn.) recovered a Jeff Radel (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) fumble in the end zone for the Johnnies' first touchdown, but Augsburg tied the game at 7-7, after taking advantage of a Johnnie punt blocked by Augsburg's
Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS).
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) caught his sixth touchdown of the season from
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) on a five-yard pass play.
But after that, the game was all Johnnies. Blake Elliott (Jr., Melrose, Minn.) caught a nine-yard touchdown from SJU quarterback Ross Denne (Jr., Avon, Minn./Albany HS), and Gibson caught two of his scores from Johnnie thrower Ryan Keating (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) in the second period. A Josh Nelson (So., Milaca, Minn.) three-yard scoring run sealed the dominating half by the Johnnies.
After Gibson caught a 12-yard pass from Denne in the third quarter, the Auggies closed the gap slightly, when
Chris Boyer (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter. But R.J. Welsh (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), the third quarterback the Johnnies used in the game, tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Black (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) to cap the scoring.
Kent Crowley (Jr., Iona, Minn./Fulda HS) led the Johnnies with 11 carries for 74 yards. St. John's, which had been limited to just 28 rushing yards in its first two games of the season, rushed for 111 yards in the game Saturday. Denne threw for 140 yards, completing 12 of 22 passes, while Keating threw for 63 yards on five completions. Gibson's 56 yuards on four catches led the Johnnies.
Augsburg's Fransen completed just 15 of 35 passes for 181 yards. Johnson's 65 yards on four receptions led the Auggies.
T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries and caught four passes for 41 yards.
The Johnnie defense was paced by Jamie Jones (Jr., Missoula, Mont./Loyola Sacred Heart HS), who had nine tackles (five solo). Cameron McCambridge (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had seven tackles (five solo) and an interception, and Ryan Bielat (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) had two sacks.
Augsburg's defense was led by Theisen's eight tackles (six solo), including two for loss and a blocked kick.
Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had 6.5 tackles (three solo) and
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had two sacks.
Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had a sack and a block of an extra-point attempt.
Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (9/29) at 1 p.m., Augsburg hosting St. Olaf at Edor Nelson Field, St. John's hosting St. Thomas in the schools' 100th meeting.

The St. John's broadcast is also available on its athletic website at this address: http://www.csbsju.edu/sjusports/.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg claimed a 52-21 win at Carleton to open the MIAC portion of the schedule last Saturday, while St. John's fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1983 with a 31-28 loss at home to St. Olaf last Saturday.
SERIES: This is the 63rd meeting in the all-time series between Augsburg and St. John's, a series the Johnnies lead 53-7-2. Augsburg's last win in the series came in 1997, when the Auggies -- playing in their home opener, like Saturday's game -- stunned the Johnnies 20-10. Augsburg has won just twice in the series since the 1980 season (21 games). The series began in Augsburg's first year of football, 1926; Augsburg and St. John's have met each season since 1954.
LAST YEAR: Taking advantage of three turnovers and several big plays, St. John's University rolled to a 40-7 victory over Augsburg College on Sept. 23, 2000 at SJU's Clemens Stadium. St. John's won despite holding the ball for just 16 minutes, 46 seconds and only 46 offensive plays, compared to Augsburg's 43:14 and 83 offensive plays. The Johnnies amassed 253 yards of total offense (227 passing, 26 rushing), compared to Augsburg's 211 (165 passing, 46 rushing). However, the Johnnies scored once on an interception return and took advantage of two other Auggie turnovers and later converted them for scores, leading to the blowout victory. Despite controlling the ball for most of the game, Augsburg's offense failed to produce points. Augsburg only had 14 first downs and converted only seven of 23 third-down opportunities. Augsburg was forced to punt 11 times in the game. Augsburg opened the scoring by converting a 13-play, 72 yard drive that consumed 7:47 of the clock. A three-yard scoring pass from
Paul Tetzloff to
John Rotter was the lone score of the game for the Auggies. SJU quarterback Tom Linnemann threw for thee touchdowns and Ryan Keating threw for two scores. Will Gibson returned an interception 45 yards for the score in the second quarter. The Johnnies also netted seven sacks for 53 yards lost in the game.
FIELD REDEDICATION FOR LEGENDARY COACH EDOR NELSON ON SATURDAY: Augsburg College will honor longtime coach and instructor Edor Nelson (Augsburg '38) by re-dedicating its outdoor athletic field in his honor on Saturday. The ceremony to dedicate the field as Edor Nelson Field will be held during halftime of the Augsburg-St. John's game. A pre-game brunch will begin at 10 a.m. at the Christensen Center, with a program to follow. Tickets for the pre-game brunch and program are $12, and can be reserved by calling Irene Steenson at (612) 330-1245.
Nelson coached football at Augsburg for 23 years (1947-69), finishing with a 58-118-10 coaching record, the most coaching wins in school history. He was inducted into the Minnesota Football Hall of Fame in 1973. He coached baseball for 33 seasons (1946-79), earning MIAC titles seven times (1947, 48, 59, 61, 63, 73 and 75) and earning conference coach of the year honors in 1975. Nelson was also an associate professor in Augsburg's health and physical education department for 32 years, retiring in 1978.
In 1984, the college named its then-new outdoor athletic field as Anderson-Nelson Field, in honor of Nelson and longtime athletic director and men's basketball coach Ernie Anderson. In February 2001, the college dedicated the newly-renovated court at Si Melby Hall in Anderson's honor.
A native of Dawson, Minn., Nelson earned Augsburg Hall of Fame honors as both a student-athlete and coach at Augsburg. As an athlete, he was a multi-sport star in football, basketball and baseball, graduating from the college in 1938. After serving his country in World War II including six months of imprisonment in a German prison camp he returned to this country, earning his master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1947. He taught and coached for three years in Lamberton, Minn., and returned to Augsburg in 1946, when he was named baseball coach. He was named football coach in 1947, and also served the college as hockey and wrestling coach at times in the 1950s.
FRANSEN TO START AT QB, GOODALE BACK IN UNIFORM: Senior quarterback
Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), who was expected to start the season as the Auggies' top signal-caller, missed the first two games of the season due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the team's intrasquad preseason scrimmage. He has returned to practice this week, though head coach
Jack Osberg said that junior
Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) will get his third start of the season this week. Fransen had a strong second start to his varsity career at quarterback, completing 16 of 22 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns, one off the school single-game record of six, set by Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against St. Olaf. He completed his first seven straight passes to start the game. Fransen played in just over two quarters of work in the game.
JOHNSON EARNS NATIONAL CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS: Wide receiver
Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) earned Division III National Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors from Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette magazine for his school-record-tying performance in last Saturday's win over Carleton College. Johnson tied a school record by catching four touchdown passes in the Auggies' 52-21 win at Carleton. He caught eight passes for 227 yards, just the eighth 200-yard receiving performance in a single game in school history, and the sixth-most receiving yards in a single game in school history.
Johnson's four touchdowns -- 47, 24, 40 and 41 yards -- tied a school mark held by Scott Hvistendahl (against Mayville State in 1998) and Karl Sneider (against Macalestr in 1996). The single-game school record for receiving yards is 271, set by Hvistendahl in the 1998 game against Mayville State. Hvistendahl, who now plays for the Arena Football League 2's Quad City Steamwheelers, has the other seven 200-yard receiving performances in school history.
Through two games, Johnson has 12 catches for 301 yards (25.1 yards per catch, 150.5 yards per game) and five touchdowns. He currently leads the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring, receiving yardage and receiving yards per catch.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Behind the school record-tying four touchdowns by
Mark Johnson,
Dave Fransen's five touchdown passes and a brilliant offensive and defensive performance, Augsburg routed Carleton in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, 52-21 last Saturday in Northfield, Minn. Augsburg scored three touchdowns in first eight minutes of the game and scored on its first six drives, rolling up 202 yards of total offense in the first 15 minutes to build a 42-7 halftime lead. Augsburg relied on a stifling defense that held the Knights to nine yards on five first-quarter drives. The Auggies converted all five of their fourth-down conversions.
The Auggies amassed 444 total yards to Carleton's 269. Augsburg spread around the ball on the ground and gained 177 yards, with nine different Auggies handling the ball. Kicker
Tim Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) also tied a single-game school record with seven point-after-touchdown conversions. The previous mark of seven was set by
Matt Van Alstine in the last 50-point game for the Auggies, a 52-7 win over Carleton on Oct. 30, 1999. Augsburg's single-game scoring record is 56 points, set in a 1997 win over Bethel. Augsburg has scored 50 points or more only four times in school history, all since 1981.
T.J. Bramwell (Jr., Tomah, Wis.) scored twice in the third quarter, on a 10-yard rush and a five-yard pass from Fransen, and
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) had the other Auggie score, on a seven-yard run in the first quarter after a Carleton punt was blocked by
Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.).
Chris Boyer's (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) 40 yards on seven carries led the Auggie rushers.
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) picked up two sacks for the Auggie defense.
Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) led the Auggies with 5.5 tackles (five solo), while
Andy Stephenson (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had 4.5 tackles (four solo).
WRIGHT MOVES TO DEFENSE:
Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who transferred into the Augsburg program as a tight end this season after playing wide receiver for one season at Wisconsin-La Crosse and two seasons at Hamline, will move from offense to defense. He will play linebacker and be a backup at the "Will" linebacker position.
OSBERG IS 8-2 IN HOME-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has led a resurrection of Augsburg football since being hired as head coach before the 1991 season. In those 10 previous seasons, Augsburg has won eight of its 10 home openers, including four of the last five. Against MIAC opponents in home openers, Osberg is 2-1. With a 50-52 career record, Osberg has the second-most wins in Augsburg football history; Edor Nelson, who coached from 1947-69, has the most wins, 56 (56-118-10 overall). This marks the second time in the last three years that Augsburg has had to wait until the third week of the season to open at home; the last was in 1999, when the Auggies beat St. Olaf 30-27.
Jack Osberg's home-opening games:
Sept. 7, 1991: Augsburg 24, Concordia-St. Paul 14
Sept. 12, 1992: Augsburg 31, Wisconsin-Superior 3
Sept. 11, 1993: Augsburg 22, Huron (S.D.) 6
Sept. 10, 1994: Augsburg 13, Huron (S.D.) 10
Sept. 16, 1995: Concordia-Moorhead 38, Augsburg 6
Sept. 7, 1996: Augsburg 14, Mayville State 13.
Sept. 20, 1997: Augsburg 20, St. John's 10
Sept. 12, 1998: Augsburg 45, Mayville State (N.D.) 13
Sept. 25, 1999: Augsburg 30, St. Olaf 27
Sept. 9, 2000: Wisconsin-Eau Claire 17, Augsburg 13
AUGSBURG'S HOME, ARTIFICIAL TURF RECORD: Augsburg is the lone MIAC school (and one of just four in Minnesota) to have an artificial-turf playing surface for football. At Edor Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 26-21 record in head coach
Jack Osberg's tenure (since 1991). Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 29-48-1 at home. On artificial turf (including games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and Fargo, N.D., Fargodome), Augsburg is 33-25 since 1991 and 36-56-1 since 1984.
SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES: After finishing second in the nation in the NCAA Division III playoffs last season, St. John's is off to an uncharacteristic 0-2 start to the 2001 campaign -- the first time St. John's has started 0-2 since 1983. The Johnnies opened the 1983 season by going 0-3, then won seven straight games and finished the season with a 7-4 overall record.
On Saturday, St. John's head coach John Gagliardi coaches in his 500th career game, becoming just the third head coach in college football history to reach the milestone. Legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson coached in 588 career games, while former Pacific coach Amos Alonzo Stagg coached in 548 games. Gagliardi, in his 53rd season as a collegiate head coach and 49th season at St. John's, has a 377-111-11 career record, the second-most wins in college football history; Robinson's 408 wins are the most.
Last week, MIAC upstart St. Olaf used a last-minute field goal to edge St. John's 31-28 at Collegeville, sending the Johnnies to 0-2. Linebacker Jamie Jones (Jr., Missoula, Mont./Loyola Sacred Heart HS) earned MIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors with a three-interception, nine-tackle performance. Two of the pickoffs eventually led to Johnnie touchdowns, and the other ended a late Ole drive.
Trailing 13-0 in the second quarter, the Johnnies rallied to eventually take a 28-20 third-quarter lead, keying on three touchdown passes from quarterback Ryan Keating (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and another from Ross Denne (Jr., Avon, Minn./Albany HS). The Oles tied the game at 28-28 in the fourth quarter, and St. John's had a chance to take the lead with 6:43 left in the game, but Brandon Keller's (Fr., Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary's Central HS) 35-yard field goal sailed just left. St. Olaf then went on a 16-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:02 off the clock and ended in its game-winning field goal with 42 seconds remaining.
The Oles out gained the Johnnies 497 to 313 in total offense. St. Olaf ran 86 plays compared to 51 for SJU. St. Olaf held the ball for more than 42 minutes in the game. There were a total of 10 turnovers, five by each team.
For the Johnnies, the running woes continued, as the team rushed for only 19 yards on 24 carries. This season, SJU has a total of 28 rushing yards after two games. Blake Elliot (Jr., Melrose, Minn.) returned to the Johnnie lineup and caught five passes for 92 yards. Denne was 12-for-16 passing for 181 yards and one touchdown, while Keating was 5-for-11 for 113 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensively, Jeremy Hood (So., Buffalo, Minn./Monticello HS) and Cameron McCambridge (Jr., Edina, Minn.) each had 17 total tackles. Hood had six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts St. Olaf next Saturday at 1 p.m., at Edor Nelson Field. St. John's returns to Collegeville, Minn., next Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting St. Thomas. It is the 100th meeting in the series between the Johnnies and Tommies, one of the top rivalries in all of football.
