STORY FROM WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE SPORTS INFORMATION

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (9/8/01) -- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire football team rolled to its second straight victory over a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team, with a 37-14 triumph over Augsburg College in the Blugolds' home opener at Carson Park Saturday night. It was Augsburg's season-opener.

The Blugolds outgained the Auggies, 430-188, and controlled the ball for 34:06 of playing time to 25:54 for Augsburg.

The Blugolds turned an Augsburg fumble and an interception into 10 points midway through the first quarter and never looked back. Nick Draeger recovered the fumble at the Auggies' 41 and Justin Miller intercepted at the Augsburg 21. Andy Rohloff hit a 32-yard field goal and Don Kahl took a five-yard pass from Brian Rasmussen for the TD.

The Blugolds built the lead to 22-0 at intermission after Rasmussen found Jason Foemmel on a 14-yard pass in the second quarter and, moments later, Chad Crutchley returned a punt 66 yards for a score.

The Blugolds opened up a 30-0 lead early in the fourth quarter when Jeremy Bergeron caught a 19-yard toss from Rasmussen to cap a 77-yard, 10-play drive.

Augsburg managed two consolation touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game, sandwiched around a 2-yard TD run by Eau Claire's Tim Gunderson. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored his first collegiate touchdown on a two-yard rush with 6:53 left, and Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) in the closing minute.

Rasmussen completed 22 of 46 passes for 244 yards while redshirt freshman Dave Garrison rushed for 105 yards on 26 carries.

Foemmel and Brad Newton each caught five passes while Bergeron and Garrison added four receptions each.

Paul's 53 yards on nine carries led the Auggies, while Johnson caught 4 passes for 74 yards. Fransen completed just nine of 23 passes for 117 yards, and was picked off twice.

The Blugold defense sacked Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen six times for losses totaling 33 yards. Nick Goeser led the way with three sacks. The defense also picked off two passes and recovered two fumbles.

Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) led the Auggies with 13.5 tackles (12 solo), while Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) had 7.5 tackles (6 solo). Shane Gunderson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) each had a pass interception for the Auggie defense.

The Blugolds, now 2-0 for the season, will travel to Valparaiso University next Saturday (9/15/01) to complete the non-conference portion of their schedule. Augsburg opens MIAC play next Saturday at Carleton. Game time is 1 p.m. at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn.

Game results: Sept. 17, 1966 at Augsburg, 7-7 tie; Sept. 16, 1967 at Eau Claire, 21-20 UWEC win; Sept. 14, 1968 at Augsburg, 39-12 Augsburg win; Sept. 13, 1969 at Eau Claire, 20-19 Augsburg win; Sept. 19, 1970 at Augsburg, 7-6 UWEC win; Sept. 18, 1971 at Augsburg, 33-8 UWEC win; Sept. 16, 1972 at Augsburg, 20-0 Augsburg win; Sept. 15, 1973 at Eau Claire, 21-17 Augsburg win.

LAST YEAR: Darrell Souhrada scored on a one-yard dive with 38 seconds to play, lifting Wisconsin-Eau Claire to a 17-13, come-from-behind victory over host Augsburg last season at Anderson-Nelson Field. Souhrada's scoring dive came two-plays after Blugold quarterback Brian Rasmussen, on a fourth-down and 14 play at the Augsburg 35-yard line, completed a 33 yard pass to Chad Crutchley to put the ball at the Augsburg 2-yard line in the final minute of play. Despite being outgained by a 424-240 margin, Augsburg held a 13-10 lead for most of the fourth quarter, taking the lead on a 41-yard field goal by Tim Mauseth with 11:47 remaining. Blugold quarterback Rasmussen completed 27 of 46 passes for 343 yards, including a 55-yard scoring strike to Jeremy Bergeron late in the second quarter, tying the game at 10-10.

Augsburg opened the scoring on its first drive, taking advantage of an interception by Larry Lyden. Paul Tetzloff rumbled six yards for the touchdown with 12:27 remaining. A 20-yard field goal by Mauseth gave the Auggies a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Tetzloff completed 18 of 39 passes for 144 yards. John Rotter led the Auggies with 46 yards on seven receptions. Brian Warden paced the Auggie rushers with 85 yards on 21 carries.

Souhrada led the Blugolds with 80 rushing yards on 27 carries. Crutchley caught 10 passes for 166 yards. Eau Claire's defense set the stage for the game-winning drive, stopping Augsburg on downs with 2:23 remaining at its own 35-yard line. Eau Claire scored the go-ahead touchdown 11 plays later.

QB SHUFFLE DUE TO INJURY: Senior quarterback Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), who was expected to start the season as the Auggies' top signal-caller, was sidelined due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the team's intrasquad scrimmage last Thursday. Head coach Jack Osberg said that Goodale is likely to miss the first three games of the season. Junior Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) will get the start in place of Goodale, with fellow junior John Tieben (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) in reserve. Fransen saw spot action in four games as one of three Auggie quarterbacks to see varsity snaps in 2000.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: In 1996, Augsburg College finished the football season 3-7, after three straight .500-or-above campaigns. The Auggies graduated seven starters and had several question marks entering the 1997 season.

All the Auggies did in 1997 was win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, beat MIAC power St. John's in the team's home-opener, and make it to the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the first time in school history.

In 2000, Augsburg finished 3-7, after three straight .500-or-above campaigns. The Auggies graduated 11 starters and had several question marks facing the club entering the 2001 season. And the Auggies' 2001 home-opener is against defending national runner-up St. John's.

Déjà vu all over again in 2001?

Possibly, said head coach Jack Osberg, entering his 11th year as Augsburg's head coach with the third-longest tenure of any coach in the MIAC. Osberg has a 49-52 career record, and his victory total puts him just nine behind Edor Nelson's 58 wins (1947-69) for the most in school history.

"We are coming off a tough-luck schedule last year. We didn't play very consistently last year, and that's what we have to strive for this year, consistency on both offense and defense," Osberg said. "The league is very strong and balanced, which is going to make it a challenge for us."

Just three starters return to an Auggie offense that will need to replace all but one of the skill-position players. The lone skill-position starter returning on offense is wide receiver Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), who has caught 11 touchdowns in his two previous Auggie campaigns after transferring from Division II South Dakota State following his freshman year. He earned second-team All-MIAC honors in 2000 by leading the team with a 16.3 yards-per-reception average and five scores.

The offensive line will be a bit inexperienced on the varsity level, with just two regular starters back. But it's deep, with a corps of strong juniors ready to step into starting roles. The lone senior is left guard Brandon Ward (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./HastingsHS). Jesse Naughton (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and Bob Eckstrom (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) split time in a starting role at the right tackle spot. Rich Nelson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) proved his versatility as a backup at several positions on the line last year, along with Lincoln Langhorst (Jr., Lafayette, Minn./Sibley East HS), James Brue (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and Bradley Motl (Jr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS).

Augsburg's defense may be the key to moving up in the MIAC standings this year. Losing just three starters to graduation and returning skill players at virtually every position, the Auggies will aim to improve a corps that was third in the MIAC in total defense (328.78 yards per game allowed) last season.

Keying the interior attack will be All-American candidate Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), a three-year starter on the defensive line. He had seven sacks in nine games last season, bringing his career total to 20.5, the third-most in school history. The school record, 28.5, was set by Bob Anderson from 1992-95. Chappuis earned first-team All-MIAC honors, his second all-conference honor of his career.

Joining Chappuis on the defensive line will be returning starters Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) and Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.). Sherry, a second-team All-MIAC player last season, accumulated five sacks last year, while Koch had eight tackles for loss.

The linebacking corps is where Augsburg has its most depth returning, Osberg said, keyed by returning starter Scott Archambault (Sr., Faribault, Minn.). He quietly had a strong season for the Auggies from the strong side last year, with 40 tackles (29 solo) and a team-leading two interceptions. Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) battled injuries last season but still managed 18 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

All four secondary starters return, but it's a group that needs to show some improvement and cut down on the big plays, Osberg noted. The Auggies had just eight interceptions last year while giving up 16 passing touchdowns. Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) leads the way in the secondary, as a three-year starter. He moved from cornerback to free safety last year and was the team's leader in tackles (71, 42 solo), to go with one interception and 10 pass break-ups. He has earned second-team All-MIAC honors the last two seasons.

Shane Gunderson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) transferred to Augsburg last season after five years away from college athletics. The Big Ten baseball Player of the Year and All-American in 1995 while at the University of Minnesota, Gunderson was drafted and played five years of minor league baseball in the Minnesota Twins organization. But he returned to college football last year and shined in the Auggie strong safety spot, with 55 tackles (40 solo) and an interception to earn second-team All-MIAC honors.

Both cornerbacks also return - Luke Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa), who had two interceptions and 10 pass break-ups last year in his first year at Augsburg; and Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), who was second on the team in total tackles (70, team-high 54 solo) last season.

OSBERG IS 9-1 IN SEASON-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has led a resurrection of Augsburg football since being hired as head coach before the 1991 season. One of his strongest accomplishments has been his record in season-opening games. However, Osberg will have to start a new streak when he opens his 11th season this Saturday. Last year's home loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire marked the first time that an Osberg-coached team had lost in a season-opener in his 10 seasons. Osberg is 9-0 in season openers at Augsburg. With a 49-52 career record, Osberg has the second-most wins in Augsburg football history; Edor Nelson, who coached from 1947-69, has the most wins, 56 (56-118-10 overall).

Sept. 9, 2000 at Augsburg, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 17, Augsburg 13

AUGGIES DOMINANT AT NIGHT: In addition to being the lone MIAC school (and one of just four in Minnesota) to have an artificial-turf playing surface for football, Augsburg is one of the few MIAC schools to play night games every season. Head coach Jack Osberg has scheduled at least one night game (kickoffs starting after 4 p.m.) each year since 1992. The Auggies have a 10-6 record in night contests.

SCOUTING THE BLUGOLDS: After recovering from a 2-8 season in 1999 with a 6-4 finish in 2000, there was promise for head coach Todd Hoffner's Wisconsin-Eau Claire squad, entering his third season at the helm. And the promise paid off in a big way last Saturday, as the Blugolds accomplished the nearly impossible -- beating MIAC stalwart (and 2000 Division III national runner-up) St. John's 25-10 at Collegeville, Minn.

The Blugolds accomplished the feat without the services of standout running back Darrell Souhrada (Sr., Riceville, Iowa), who missed the game with a pulled hamstring. Quarterback Brian Rasmussen (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) completed 20 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blugolds to the victory. Souhrada's replacement, redshirt freshman Joe Garrison (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) rushed for two scores and netted 96 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, the Blugold defense limited St. John's to just 267 yards of total offense -- including a net nine yards of rushing. Defensive back Jay Hoyord (Sr., Scandinavia, Wis./Iola-Scandinavia HS) had 11 tackles and an interception, and lineman Austin Crow (Jr., Black River Falls, Wis.) had 11 tackles and three sacks. The defense held St. John's to only a field goal until the final period, when the Johnnies scored a touchdown with eight minutes remaining.

"I can't explain how huge that was," Hoffner told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram newspaper after Saturday's game. "St. John's is always a demorializing team to play. They're relentless, and they'll get to you eventually."

SECOND AUGGIE MATCHUP AGAINST WIAC SCHOOL SINCE 1992: Saturday's meeting with Wisconsin-Eau Claire marks the second straight season Augsburg has played a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school. Prior to last year's game with the Blugolds, the last WIAC opponent for the Auggies was in 1992. On Sept. 12, 1992, Augsburg topped Wisconsin-Superior 31-3 at Augsburg. Ironically, Augsburg's win was the last football game in UW-Superior history; the school's administration dropped football a week later because of low participation numbers. All-time against WIAC opponents, Augsburg is 17-27-3 dating back to 1941: Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 4-4-1; Wisconsin-La Crosse, 0-1-0; Wisconsin-River Falls, 10-17-2; Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 1-2-0; Wisconsin-Stout, 0-2-0; Wisconsin-Superior, 2-1-0.

Schools in the MIAC and WIAC have rarely faced each other in recent years in the regular season. MIAC schools have just one nonconference game, and WIAC schools have three nonconference games to fill each year. Since 1989, there have been only 13 meetings of WIAC and MIAC schools in the regular season. In that time, the MIAC is 4-9 against the WIAC. Including playoff games, the MIAC is 8-12 against the WIAC. St. John's has six of the MIAC's wins; Augsburg and St. Thomas have one each.
