BOXSCORE

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/19/02) -- Tanner Schieck (So., Austin, Minn.) scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds as Carleton College scored the first 11 points of the game, beating Augsburg College, 78-53, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Carleton's West Gym.

Schieck's total was one shy of Alan Chap's school record of 22 rebounds set in a 1963-64 game. It marked his fifth double-double of the season and seventh of his career. His rebounding effort allowed the Knights to out-rebound the Auggies 52-31, Carleton's largest margin of the season.

Steve Nuessle (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) paced all scorers with 17 points. Kyle Beste (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) added 13 and Matt Stangl (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) added 11. Scott Christensen (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) added eight points, five rebounds and six assists (with zero turnovers) for Carleton (7-9, 6-5 MIAC).

Nick Peters (Jr., St. Peter, Minn./Nicollet HS) paced Augsburg (7-9, 3-8 MIAC) with 15 points. Adam Kotewa (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West HS) added 12 as the Auggies dropped their eighth game out of their last nine after starting the season 5-0.

The Knights raced out to an 11-0 lead, capped by five consecutive points from Christensen as the hosts led the entire way. Augsburg pulled within five with 6:29 left in the first half, but Carleton put on a quick 7-1 run and ended the half with a Christensen three-pointer to lead, 34-25, at the break.

Carleton started the second half with an 8-2 spurt, leading 42-27. The visitors battled back within nine three times, the final one on a lay-up by Shawn Johnson, but the Knights answered with a 10-4 run, capped by a Beste baseline jumper to give the Knights a 56-41 lead with 8:46 left.

The Knights have won five of their last seven games and six of eight home games this season.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (1/23) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead and Carleton playing at Gustavus.
