Kalis hits career-high 23, Auggies notch 87-68 triumph over Concordia-Moorhead!

MINNEAPOLIS (1/23/02) -- Travis Kalis (So., Elysian, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS) notched his second career high of the season with 23 points as Augsburg College used a second-half spurt to claim an 87-68 win over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Kalis, a little-used point guard before the last two weeks, earned his second career start and surpassed his previous career high of 15 points, set in Augsburg's 78-75 win over Gustavus last Wednesday. He added four assists and four steals for the Auggies, now 8-9 overall and 4-8 in MIAC play. Concordia drops to 6-12 overall and 5-8 in the MIAC.

Kalis hit three 3-pointers in the game, as did Adam Kotewa (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West HS), who had 21 points and four rebounds for the hosts.

Augsburg closed the final 5:19 of the first half with a 10-3 run, taking a 41-34 lead into the locker room. Kotewa had six points in the Auggie run. Augsburg extended the lead to 19 points with a 15-3 run over the first five minutes of play in the second half, taking a 56-37 advantage. Augsburg never trailed again in the game, though the Cobbers cut the lead to eight points later in the half.

Jay Howard (So., Burnsville, Minn.) had 15 points for the Auggies, while Josh Natzel (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Shawn Johnson (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) had six points apiece. Nick Heisick (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Soren Nelson (Fr., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) came off the bench to score 15 points to lead the Cobbers, while pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Kevin Gilchrest (So., Seattle, Wash./Chief Stealth HS) had 13 points and four assists, and Nathan Ohme (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) ahd 10 points and three assists.

Augsburg's starters outscored Concordia's starters by a 61-17 margin.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/26) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Hamline and Concordia hosting St. Olaf.
