Travis Kalis (So., Elysian, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS) led Augsburg in scoring for the second game in a row with 22 points, and
Jay Howard (So., Burnsville, Minn.) claimed his sixth double-double of the season, as Augsburg College scored a 74-63 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hamline's Hutton Arena.
Kalis, a little-used point guard before the last two weeks, earned his third career start and scored his second-straight 20-plus-point effort, hitting four 3-pointers for the Auggies, now 9-9 overall and 5-8 in MIAC play. Hamline drops to 1-17 overall and 0-13 in the MIAC.
Adam Kotewa (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West HS), hit two 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the Auggies, his 16th double-figure scoring effort in Augsburg's 18 games this season.
The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first half, with Augsburg leading 29-28 at intermission. Augsburg took the lead to stay with a 20-8 run over a six-minute span midway through the half, taking a 60-48 lead with 7:01 remaining. Kalis scored 16 of Augsburg's 20 points in the run, hitting three 3-pointers and nailing 7-of-10 free throws.
Augsburg led by as many as 15 points on three separate occasions in the second half, before the Pipers cut the lead to the 11-point final margin.
Howard had 11 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots, three assists and two steals for the Auggies, for his seventh double-double of his 30-game Auggie career.
Michael Leach (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) added eight points, five rebounds and three steals for the Auggies.
Hamline had three players in double figures -- Tyler Petrich (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 17 points and three steals, Taylor Pack (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) had 12 points and B.J. Rossow (Fr., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 11 points. Mike Robison (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) had eight points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Monday (1/28) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Macalester and Hamline hosting Carleton.
