MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/26/02) -- For the 12th year in a row, Augsburg College swept through the competition at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Duals tournament, outscoring their league opponents 214-0 in four matches to claim the championship on Saturday at Concordia College-Moorhead.

Augsburg opened the meet with a 50-0 win over host Concordia, topped Carleton 58-0, St. Olaf 56-0 and St. John's 50-0. Augsburg is now 13-0 in dual meets this season.

In the 12-year history of the MIAC Team Duals, Augsburg has a perfect 62-0 record, winning all 12 tournaments and outscoring MIAC foes by a 2,985-124 margin. Augsburg has a 16-season, 82-match dual-meet winning streak against MIAC opponents, its last loss a 25-21 defeat to St. John's in 1986. Since 1975, Augsburg is 181-2 against MIAC opponents.

Augsburg, the two-time defending Division III national champions and winners of seven of the last 11 national crowns, extended its consecutive-match winning streak against Division III opponents to 70 with the wins Saturday. Augsburg's last loss to a Division III opponent was a 26-16 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Feb. 11, 1994. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 119-3 in dual meets against Division III opponents; since 1979-80, Augsburg is 195-13. Against non-Division I opponents (Divisions II and III) since 1989-90), Augsburg is now 162-7.

Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 174 pounds, earned the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler award for the second straight season. He won three of his four matches by pin on the day, including the fastest pin of the afternoon, a 28-second pin of Frank Brodie of Carleton. He also had a technical fall victory. Slack, who has lost just two matches in the last three seasons, is now 29-1 with 16 pins, the second-best total on the team.

The Auggies claimed 15 pins in the 40 matches, including three by 165-pounder Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS). Abbott, ranked second in the nation at 165, has a team-high 19 pins this season.

Darin Bertram * (Sr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), the defending national champion and top-ranked wrestler in the country at 125 pounds, claimed a pin and technical fall.

Augsburg used 14 different wrestlers on the day, and also benefitted from 12 forfeits.

Kevin Rasmussen (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), ranked second in the nation at 197 pounds, claimed two wins by pin. Ricky Crone (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked third nationally at 184 pounds, scored a pin and technical fall win. John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS), the top-ranked wrestler nationally at 133, had a second-period pin.

Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.), ranked third nationally at 141 pounds, had a pin and decision win. Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), ranked seventh nationally at 157, scored two technical falls in his three victories. Jamell Tidwell (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked third nationally at 149, had one major-decision win.

The Auggies return home to Si Melby Hall on Tuesday (1/29), hosting Division II North Dakota State at 7 p.m. in a meeting of the two-time defending national champions in Division III and II, respectively.
