Wrestling 1/29/02 -- Augsburg 26, North Dakota State 12
MINNEAPOLIS (1/29/02) -- Winning seven of 10 individual matches, Augsburg College scored a 26-12 wrestling dual-meet victory over North Dakota State in a battle of the two-time defending national champions in NCAA Divisions II and III on Tuesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg, the top-ranked team in the Division III national poll after winning the last two Division III national titles and seven of the last 11 national crowns, claimed two major decisions and an injury default victory to improve to 14-0 in dual meets this season. Augsburg extended its two-season, consecutive-match winning streak to 22 with the triumph. North Dakota State, currently ranked second in Division II after winning the last two Division II national titles, dropped to 8-2 in dual meets this season.
Augsburg is now 5-2 in the all-time series against the Bison, in a series dating to the 1977-78 season. Augsburg has won the last two meetings in the series. Against non-Division I opponents (Divisions II and III) since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is now 163-7. Augsburg has lost just two matches to opponents from Division II since the 1995-96 season.
One of the highlights of the match came in the first match of the night, when Augsburg's
John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS), the top-ranked wrestler nationally at 133, claimed a takedown 17 seconds into overtime to beat NDSU's Jake Thielbar (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) 5-3. Thielbar was ranked fourth in the nation in Division II.
Trailing 10-6 after five matches, North Dakota State flip-flopped its lineup, moving Todd Fuller (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in Division II at 174 pounds, to 184 and moving Thad Pike (So., Hayfield, Minn.) from 184 to 174 to face Augsburg's
Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in Division III at 174. The move backfired on the Bison, as the Auggies won both matches. Slack scored a major-decision, 8-0 win over Pike, and Augsburg's
Ricky Crone (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked third in Division III at 184, upset Fuller 3-2, after building a 3-0 lead with a second-period escape and takedown.
Slack, the 2000 national champion and 2001 national runner-up who has lost just two matches in the last three seasons, is now 30-1 this season. Crone, who transferred to Augsburg this season from Division I Northern Iowa, improved to 27-1 on the season.
Augsburg's
Kevin Rasmussen (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), top-ranked in Division III at 197, claimed an injury default victory, and
Darin Bertram * (Sr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), the defending national champion and top-ranked wrestler in Division III at 125 pounds, earned a 6-2 win over NDSU's Matt Strawser (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), ranked third in Division II.
Also scoring wins for the Auggies were
Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.), ranked fourth in Division III at 141, with a major decision; and
Jamell Tidwell (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked third in Division III at 149, with a 4-2 win.
North Dakota State's top triumph came at 165, when Michael Fiedler (So., Sauk Centre, Minn.), ranked fourth in Division II, used a first-period takedown to take an early advantage and hold for a 3-2 win over Augsburg's
Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) ranked second in Division III.
NDSU's Paul Carlson (So., St. Francis, Minn.), ranked seventh in Division II, held on for a 9-8 win over Augsburg's
Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.). Nick Severson (Sr., Hayfield, Minn.), the top-ranked heavyweight in Division II, scored a quick turnaround pin to start the second period against Augsburg's
Mike Flanagan (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), making his Augsburg home debut after transferring from the Division I University of Minnesota.
Augsburg splits its squad to compete at the All-Lutheran Tournament at Luther (Iowa) and the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tournament on Saturday (2/2), then returns to Si Melby Hall on Friday, Feb. 8, hosting Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the home finale at 7 p.m. North Dakota State returns to North Central Conference action with a dual meet at South Dakota State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
