ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/8/02) -- Augsburg College claimed wins in nine of 10 matches Tuesday night, leading to a 36-6 rout of host St. Cloud State University in a nonconference wrestling dual meet at Halenbeck Hall.
The Auggies gave up just one pin in improving to 5-0 in dual meets on the season. Augsburg, winners of the last two NCAA Division III national championships and seven of the last 11 national crowns, are ranked No. 1 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll. St. Cloud State, ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II national rankings, drops to 1-1 in dual meets this season.
Augsburg improved to 13-4 in the all-time series against St. Cloud State, a series dating back to the 1980-81 season. Augsburg has won the last 11 duals in a row in the series against the Huskies. Against Divisions II and III opponents, Augsburg is now 154-7 since the 1989-90 season, and has lost just two matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) claimed Augsburg's lone pin of the meet, improving to 14-0 overall with a second-period triumph over John Dirksen (So., Clearwater, Minn.) at 133 pounds.
Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.), earned a second-period technical-fall win at 141 pounds over SCSU's Joe Sathre (Jr., New Brighton, Minn.). He is currently ranked third in the country in his weight class. Fisher is now 19-1 overall.
Jamell Tidwell (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) improved to 16-2 overall with a 16-6, major-decision win over St. Cloud's Brad Hunter (Jr., Oshkosh, Wis.) at 149.
Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 174, improved to 18-1 on the year with a 6-1 win over Jon Duncombe (Fr., St. Michael, Minn.).
Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), ranked second in the nation at 165, earned a 9-3 win over Matt Neumueller (Jr., Medford, Wis.).
Kevin Rasmussen (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.), ranked fourth in the nation at 197, scored a 6-1 win over Paul Breth (Sr., Holdingford, Minn.).
Also earning wins for the Auggies were
Ricky Crone (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), who remained unbeated at 16-0 at 184 pounds, with a 5-3 win over Nate Whiting (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.), and
Eric Roth (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), who moved to 8-8 in his first varsity action of the season, beating SCSU's Dan Duch (So., Baldwin, Wis.) at 157.
St. Cloud State's lone win came from heavyweight Dustin Darveaux (Jr., Pipestone, Minn.), ranked fifth in the Division II national rankings, who scored a second-period pin of Augsburg's
Scott Revier (So., Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS). Darveaux moved to 20-4 on the year.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/12) at the Dickinson State (N.D.) Classic in Dickinson, N.D. Action starts at 10 a.m. St. Cloud State returns to action on Thursday (1/10) with a home dual meet against Northern State (S.D.). Action starts at 7 p.m.
