STORY FROM CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD SPORTS INFORMATION
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/12/02) -- The trend in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was one of upsets, with Gustavus shocking St. Thomas and Bethel clipping St. Olaf, but the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers did what they were supposed to, getting another strong team effort on their way to a 38-13 win over Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon at Concordia's Jake Christiansen Stadium.

In improving to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC, Concordia dominated on both sides of the ball, gathering 359 yards of total offense compared to 247 for Augsburg. Augsburg, now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in MIAC play, was limited to just 69 rushing yards, while Concordia put together 206 net rushing yards.

The first quarter went by scoreless, but the Cobbers jumped on the board on the first play of the second quarter, a two-yard plunge by Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn.). Quarterback Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn.) put the Cobbers up 14-0 with 9:52 left in the half, finding a hole and running in from 49 yards out. Hebrink then went to work through the air, hooking up with Shawn Reile (So., Moorhead, Minn.) on a 26-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 to go in the half, giving the Cobbers a 21-0 halftime advantage.

Augsburg cut the lead to 21-7 with 13:25 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass from Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) to Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). The Cobbers had the answer however, as Bobby Clark (Jr., Seeley Lake, Mont.) broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown run on the first play of the following drive.

The Auggies returned the favor on another scoring strike from Fransen to Slowon, a 10-yard pass with 10:16 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 28-13. The Cobbers put the game away on a second touchdown pass from Hebrink to Reile, a 31-yard strike with 3:17 left in the third. Brian Halverson (Fr., Fargo, N. Dak) tacked on a 27-yard field goal, his third of the season, to give the Cobbers a 38-13 victory.

Fransen completed 17-of-33 passes for 169 yards, with Slowon catching eight balls for 78 yards. T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) led the Auggies with 37 rushing yards on 17 carries. Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) led the Auggie defenders with eight tackles (five solo), with Andy Stephenson (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) and Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) collecting five tackles apiece.

Next on the schedule for the Cobbers is a tough non-conference game on the road at the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday (10/19) at 1 p.m., while Augsburg hosts St. John's at Edor Nelson Field, also Saturday at 1 p.m.

LAST YEAR: Ryan Hebrink threw three touchdown passes and Concordia-Moorhead picked off four Augsburg passes, as the Cobbers cruised to a 33-3, season-ending victory on Nov. 9, 2001, at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Hebrink completed eight of his 10 passes for 99 yards, but three were for touchdowns -- two to Jeff Hertel. The Cobbers outgained the Auggies by a 376-247 margin, putting together 277 yards of rushing on 57 carries in the contest. Meanwhile, Concordia's defense claimed four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown and two which set up Cobber scores. In the final three games of the season, Augsburg turned the ball over 19 times -- 13 interceptions and six fumbles.

The game appeared to be a close one early, as a 12-play, 58-yard Cobber drive ended at the Augsburg 2-yard line on a fumble. Augsburg then drove 73 yards on 16 plays, ending the drive with a career-best 42-yard field goal by Tim Mauseth. However, after that, the game was all Cobbers. Concordia scored its first touchdown on a 51-yard run up the middle by Jeremy Hinderks. The Cobbers took advantage of an interception off of Auggie starting quarterback Johnny Goodale, but a field-goal attempt was blocked by Matt Chappuis. However, on the next play, Goodale threw another interception, and six plays later, Hebrink threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Jake Olson.

Dave Fransen replaced Goodale at quarterback in the second half, but two plays into the second half, his pass was picked off by Concordia's Travis Olson, who returned it 38 yards for a touchdown An 11-play, 72-yard drive later in the quarter resulted in another Cobber score, an 8-yard pass from Hebrink to Hertel, and an eight-play, 67-yard drive to start the fourth quarter ended in another scoring hookup from Hebrink to Hertel, this time from 19 yards.

Hertel gained 50 yards on five receptions to lead the Cobbers. Concordia's top-ranked rushing offense continued its dominance, with five ballcarriers gaining 30 yards or more, led by Robert Clark's 97 yards on 11 carrles. Goodale threw for 119 yards to lead Augsburg's three quarterbacks in the game. Fransen completed just three of nine passes for 18 yards. Mark Johnson led Augsburg's offense with 100 receiving yards on five catches. Ben Paul led Auggie rushers with 49 yards on eight carries.

Four different Cobbers had interceptions -- Olson's touchdown, Shane Satterlee, Adam Bakker and Jordan Talge. Ben Holm led Auggie defenders with 6.0 tackles (two solo), while Derek Fischer and Satterlee had 4.5 tackles apiece. Jonathan Huber had 1.5 sacks. Dave Sherry had 6.5 tackles (five solo) two sacks for the Auggies. Brent Peroutka had 6.0 tackles (four solo) and Chappuis had 5.5 tackles (three solo), a blocked kick, forced fumble and pass deflection.

AUGSBURG LAST WEEK: T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed for a career-high 170 yards -- 139 in the first half -- and two touchdowns to lead Augsburg to a 49-6 rout of host Carleton in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game last Saturday at Laird Stadium. Bramwell mixed a career-high 60-yard run with touchdown runs of 10 and two yards in the first quarter.

Carleton got on the board first, as quarterback Ben Cooprider (Fr., DeKalb, Ill.) scored on a four-yard run on the Knights' first drive, a 14-play, 64-yard effort. But after that drive, it was all Augsburg. The Auggies scored on seven of their first eight drives, racking up 49 unanswered points. Bramwell rushed for 29 yards on Augsburg's first drive, including his 10-yard score. After the Auggies got the ball on downs, a seven-play, 84-yard drive, keyed by Bramwell's 60-yard jaunt to the Carleton 15-yard line, later resulted in Bramwell's second touchdown.

On the first play of the second quarter, Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) forced a fumble, which Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn.) recovered and scrambled 49 yards for a touchdown. Augsburg's special teams scored on the next drive, as Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Bramwell rushed for a two-point conversion. Augsburg continued the scoring assault on its next two drives, as Joe Starks (So., Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) netted his first career touchdown with a one-yard run, and Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) capped the first half with an 11-yard scoring run for his first career touchdown. Augsburg scored once more in the third quarter, as Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored his second touchdown of the season on a five yard reception from quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), making the score 49-6.

Augsburg put together 457 yards of total offense, including 283 rushing yards, a single-game high this season. Augsburg had 468 yards of total offense in a season-opening 44-14 win over Dakota State (S.D.). Augsburg had to punt just once in the contest, converting 7-of-14 third downs against the Knights. Meanwhile, the Auggie defense limited Carleton to just 291 yards of total offense, including just 28 rushing yards. Augsburg defenders also sacked Carleton quarterbacks four times.

Fransen completed 11 of 15 passes for 134 yards for the Auggies, one of three quarterbacks used in the game. In additon to Bramwell's 170 rushing yards on 21 carries, Lofboom also had a career single-game high with 68 rushing yards on 12 carries. Slowon caught eight passes for a season-high 103 yards, while Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) caught three passes for 39 yards. Matzke scored his fifth interception of the season, and Jake Schmiesing (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and John Golnitz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) also had pickoffs. Defensively, Harmer led the Auggies with seven tackles (three solo), while Luke Carlson (Jr., Darwin, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Fox had six tackles apiece. Andy Stephenson (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) had five tackles.

CONCORDIA LAST WEEK: The Cobbers trailed 7-6 early in the second quarter last Saturday at Hamline, but rallied for 34 unanswered points to pick up a 40-7 victory. Quarterback Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn.) put the Cobbers on the board with a 15-yard touchdown run with 5:47 left in the first quarter, but the Pipers answered on the following drive, converting a 5-yard pass from Nate Dammann to Dan Ryks, gaining a 7-6 advantage with 14:04 remaining in the first half. Hebrink had all the answers though, hitting Andrew Passanante (Jr., Hawley, Minn.) with a 43-yard touchdown pass with 9:07 left in the half, then scoring on a 54-yard run with 1:03 to go.

The score remained 19-7 through the third quarter, until Bobby Clark (Jr., Seeley Lake, Mont.) broke loose for a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown with 12:20 left in the game. Concordia added two more touchdowns, a 10-yard strike from Hebrink to Passanante with 4:18 remaining, and a 32-yard completion from backup quarterback Jacob Odermann (Fr., Belfield, N. Dak.) to Chad Worthington (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) with 2:04 to go, giving the Cobbers a convincing 40-7 victory.

FIRST GAME IN MOORHEAD SINCE 1996: If it seems like a long time since Augsburg has played a football game in Moorhead, it's because it has been a long time. The last time Augsburg played a game against Concordia at Jake Christiansen Stadium was on Oct. 26, 1996, a 30-14 Concordia win. Two entire Augsburg classes (graduating classes of 2001 and 2002) went through their entire four-year careers without playing a game at Concordia.

The Cobbers played at Augsburg in the 1997 regular season (a 13-10 Augsburg win), and played an NCAA Division III national playoff first-round game on Nov. 15, 1997 at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D. (technically a Concordia home game, a 34-22 Augsburg win). The last four seasons, the two teams have played in the Metrodome -- three years (1998-2000) as part of the MIAC Metrodome Showcase, and last season as an Augsburg home game. The MIAC did not hold a Metrodome Showcase series last season, but Augsburg was forced to play its final game of the year in the Metrodome because of field unavailability at Augsburg.

Since 1960, Augsburg has played Concordia 18 times in Moorhead, with the Cobbers holding a 17-1 advantage. The lone Augsburg win since 1960 at Concordia was a 13-3 triumph on Sept. 17, 1994. Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has played four games at Jake Christiansen Stadium and is 1-3 -- losing 55-0 in 1991, 62-0 in 1992, winning 13-3 in 1994 and losing 30-14 in 1996.

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) had 34 completions for 405 yards against St. Olaf on Sept. 21. The 34 completions is the seventh-most in a single game in Division III this season; Scott Kello of Sul Ross State (La.) completed 51 passes in a game against Howard Payne last Saturday to lead the nation.

Augsburg defensive back Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) is ranked fifth nationally in interceptions per game (1.0, five total). Concordia's Robert Clark (Jr., Seely Lake, Mont.) is rated 14th nationally in punt-return average (14.1 yards per return).

Both teams are ranked nationally in turnover ratio. Concordia is ranked 24th with a plus-1.4 average (15 turnovers gained, eight lost), while Augsburg is ranked 30th with a plus-1.2 average (15 gained, nine lost). Concordia is rated 11th nationally in total defense (208.4 yards per game), 26th in rushing defense (82.8 yards per game), 31st in pass efficiency defense (90.2 opponent ranking) and 29th in rushing offense (217.8 yards per game).

OSBERG ONE AWAY FROM TYING SCHOOL WIN RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. In his 12th season with the Auggies, he now has a 55-61 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just one behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 56 victories (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (44-56-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).

THE "MUDDLE HUDDLE": Augsburg assistant coach Ron Scott, who helps run the special teams, calls it the "Muddle Huddle." It's also been referred to as the "Daffy Duck" formation by other teams. It's the creative formation for extra-point conversion attempts that befuddled Dakota State in the season-opener. Lining up most of the squad -- the linemen and wings -- to the sideline, with just the snapper, quarterback Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and running back/receiver Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) in the center of the field, the Auggies claimed three 2-point conversion passes, while kicker Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) went 2-for-3 when the "Muddle Huddle" shifted to the more conventional PAT kick attempt.

In going 4-for-6 on 2-point conversions this season, the Auggies have already eclipsed their total for all of last year on conversions (1-of-1) and the total is already the most successful season for 2-point conversions for Augsburg since 1988 (5-for-9). Augsburg did not attempted a two-point conversion in games against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, St. Olaf or Gustavus. In last week's win over Carleton, the Auggies went for two twice, with a George pass intercepted and T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomas, Wis.) rushing for a conversion.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg broke a three-game losing streak with a convincing 49-6 win over winless Carleton last Saturday, but now a new challenge begins for the Auggies. With a stretch of four games in a row against the top teams in the MIAC -- at Concordia this week, hosting St. John's next Saturday, playing at St. Thomas on Oct. 26 and hosting Bethel on Nov. 2 -- this will truly be the make-or-break period for the men in maroon and gray. This weekend on the northern prairie may provide the answers to several questions facing Augsburg.

Which Augsburg offense will show up on Saturday, the group that put together 468 yards of total offense and 49 points on Carleton, scoring on six straight drives and seven of its first eight, or the group managed just 276 yards in a 41-14 loss to Gustavus the week before? Conversely, will the defense that limited Carleton to just 28 rushing yards and 291 yards be in evidence at Carleton, or will the defense be present that allowed 472 yards against Gustavus? How will the weather -- a chance of rain and snow and highs only in the 30s -- and playing on an unfamiliar field (Augsburg's first game at Concordia since 1996) affect Augsburg's multiple offense?

Augsburg has been a pretty even squad this season -- averaging 379.2 yards of total offense per game, giving up 371.0 yards per game. Augsburg's passing offense has averaged 239.6 yards per game this season, 221.6 per game by quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who has shown more confidence in the signal-calling position than last year. He has six touchdowns and four interceptions this year, averaging 56.4 percent completions with an efficiency rating of 126.76, compared to last year's 98.69.

The biggest question may come in the receiving corps, where the Auggies have battled some injuries and, now, the loss of speedster Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who left the team last week for personal reasons. More of the burden will fall on newcomer Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who returned to college this year after a three-year absence. He played the 1998-99 basketball season at North Dakota State, but was a prep all-stater in both football and basketball at Armstrong. So far this year, Slowon is leading the Auggies with 289 receiving yards on 21 catches, a 13.8 yards-per-catch and 72.2 yards-per-game average. Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), a defensive back last year, has adjusted to his role on the offense this year, averaging 8.3 yards per catch. Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) has battled injuries, but is still averaging 14.5 yards per reception.

The running back duo of Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) and T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) came into the season with high hopes, and broke a three-game slump against Carleton last week, with Bramwell breaking out with a career-high 170 yards -- 139 in the first half -- and two touchdowns. Paul suffered an ankle sprain in the first quarter and left the game early, but should be healthy for this week's contest. Paul is averaging 4.2 yards per carry, while Bramwell is averaging 5.3 yards a carry.

Punter Nick Schlieman (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) has been a pleasant surprise for the Auggies, averaging 37.5 yards per punt. He only had to punt once last week against Carleton. If he keeps up that pace, he could be the first Auggie punter to average over 35.0 yards per punt since Scott Hvistendahl, who averaged 36.7 yards per kick in 1998, 35.6 yards per punt in 1997 and 35.2 yards per punt in 1996. Augsburg has yet to try a field goal this season, but kicker Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) is 13-of-14 on extra points.

Defensively, Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) has five of Augsburg's 10 interceptions this season, with Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) accounting for two. Matzke has scored twice on defense, with a 60-yard pickoff for a touchdown against Dakota State and a 56-yard punt return for a score last week against Carleton. Fox has 32 total tackles (15 solo), while defensive back Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) leads the team with 34 tackles (19 solo).

Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn./William M. Kelley HS) has 25 tackles (11 solo), with a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss. He also has two sacks and last week, he scored touchdown on a 49-yard fumble recovery. Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) has 24 tackles (nine solo), and Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) leads the Auggies with 2.5 sacks.

SCOUTING THE COBBERS: Concordia is off to a strong 4-1 start to the season, winning four games in a row after a season-opening 41-17 loss to Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead. A 20-14 win over Gustavus and a 35-14 win over league co-champion Bethel, combined with dominating wins over Carleton (51-7) and Hamline (40-7), have given the Cobbers a shot at their first league championship since 1995 and first postseason berth since 1997.

As usual, the Cobbers rely on a dominating ground game, averaging 217.8 rushing yards per game. The 1-2 punch of quarterback Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn.) and tailback Robert Clark (Jr., Seeley Lake, Mont.) have provided the rushing dominance, averaging 79.6 and 53.4 rushing yards per game, respectively. Both average 4.4 yards per carry. Clark has eight touchdowns this season, while Hebrink has seven. Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./RCW HS) is a capable fullback, averaging 4.0 yards per carry. A dominating offensive line, with the starters averaging 255 pounds per man, opens holes for the runners.

Hebrink, a two-year starting signal-caller, has completed 54.3 percent of his passes (38-of-70) for a 114.2 yards-per-game average. The Cobbers don't pass much, but receivers Jake Olson (Sr., Crookston, Minn.) is averaging 15.8 yards per reception.

Defensively, linebacker Josh Dietz (So., Glencoe, Minn.) leads the team with 22.0 tackles (13 solo), including 3.5 tackles for loss. He has two interceptions. Linebacker Doug Runke (So., Willmar, Minn.) has 19.5 tackles (12 solo). Lineman Barry Bennett (Sr., Long Prairie, Minn.) leads the team with seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Josh Vickerman (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) has a team-high three interceptions.

NEXT WEEK: Both teams are in action next Saturday (10/19) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts St. John's at Edor Nelson Field, while Concordia has a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis.
