STORY FROM ST. THOMAS SPORTS INFORMATION
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/26/02) -- Senior QB Nick Ambrasas threw five touchdown passes in just over two quarters and the University of St. Thomas tied two school records in posting a 49-6 victory over visiting Augsburg College Saturday in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
St. Thomas (5-3 overall, 5-1 MIAC) beat the Auggies for the 30th time in the last 32 meetings and 16th time in a row at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. Augsburg's last football win on the Tommies' field was in 1970.
The Tommies' six touchdown passes tied a school single-game team record. The Tommies also tied a school single-game record with 634 yards of offense, including 428 yards gained in the first half while building a 32-0 halftime lead.
Ambrasas completed 20-of-24 passes for 379 yards, five TDs and no interceptions. He led the Tommies on touchdown scores on six of their first seven possessions. Ambrasas now has 52 career TD passes and has thrown a touchdown pass in 23 consecutive games.
UST backup QB Jesse Baker replaced Ambrasas in the third quarter and later threw a short pass that turned into an 86-yard TD reception by freshman Jimmy Mullen and built a 49-0 lead.
Augsburg (2-6 overall, 1-5 MIAC) gained 231 yards of offense but surrendered five sacks and had three second-half turnovers. The Auggies converted just 2-of-14 third-down conversions.
The Tommies moved into a tie for second place in the MIAC race with Concordia-Moorhead at 5-1, one game behind St. John's (6-0) . The Tommies play at St. John's next Saturday, then finish Nov. 8 in the Metrodome vs. the Cobbers. Two victories will give St. Thomas the MIAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Senior wide receiver Ryan Galindo caught three TD passes (10, 20, 21 yards) as the Tommies built a 39-0 lead just five minutes into the third quarter. Senior WR Andrew Hilliard caught four passes for 107 yards, all in the first half, and now needs 179 yards to become UST's career receiving leader.
Leading the Tommie defense were Dane Sievwright, with two sacks among his nine tackles; Sean O'Leary with two sacks; John Kaiser with 13 tackles; Dustin Peltier with a sack, an interception and seven tackles; and Matt McLaughlin with a fumble recovery.
The Tommies held out senior standout running back Jake Barkley, who's recovering from a groin injury. Junior RB Justin Kostner ran 10 times for 78 yards but appeared to suffer a season-ending knee injury on an 18-yard scoring run early in the second quarter.
Augsburg scored with 3:23 left in the game after St. Thomas fumbled a punt at the Auggie 9. On fourth-and-goal, Auggie backup QB
Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) threw a four-yard TD strike to
Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone.
Starting quarterback
Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) completed 12-of-22 passes for 142 yards for the Auggies, with
Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) catching six passes for 95 yards.
T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed 19 times for 69 yards.
Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the Auggies with nine tackles (six solo), while
Ross Peroutka (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) had seven tackles (five solo).
Chike Ochiagha (So., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had a quarterback sack.
Augsburg hosts Bethel in its final home game of the season next Saturday (11/2) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 12th season and currently has a 55-63 career mark. St. Thomas coach Don Roney (St. Thomas '84) is in his fifth season and has a 31-16 overall record.
RADIO: Augsburg games are broadcast on KCCO-AM 950, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. Because of broadcast restrictions, Auggie football games will not able to be cybercast on the Internet this season. The game will be webcast on the Minnesota Sports Update website (http://www.minnesotasportsupdate.com/) with Alan Armstrong and Lou Michaels.
SERIES: This is the 59th game in the all-time series between Augsburg and St. Thomas, a series the Tommies lead 48-8-2. St. Thomas has won the last six games in a row in the series, and Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is 2-9 in his career against St. Thomas. Augsburg's last win in the series was a 28-7 home triumph on Oct. 21, 1995. The teams began the series in 1928, and have played every year since 1952.
LAST YEAR: In his first college start, Justin Kostner rushed 31 times for 146 yards, including TD runs of 54 and 5 yards, and teammate Andrew Hilliard caught three touchdown passes as host St. Thomas scored a 34-14 victory over Augsburg on Oct. 6, 2001 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. The Tommies scored three touchdowns shortly after Auggie turnovers and beat the Auggies for the 29th time in the last 31 meetings and 15th consecutive time in St. Paul. St. Thomas outgained Augsburg 367-186 yards and won without three injured offensive starters, including ace running back Jake Barkley, who sat out with a bruised knee.
After an Augsburg fumble on a punt return on the game's fifth play, Kostner dashed 54 yards for a TD on first down, and the PAT kick made it 7-0. The Auggies
answered with a 10-play, 69-yard drive capped by
T.J. Bramwell's 10-yard run and PAT kick for a 7-7 tie. Hilliard's 34-yard TD catch from quarterback Nick Ambrasas with 42 seconds left in the first half capped a 14-play, 90-yard drive and let the Tommies take a 14-7 halftime lead. The Tommies built a 27-7 lead in the third period on two more Hilliard TD catches that followed interceptions. UST's Rick Joslin intercepted Auggie QB
Dave Fransen on the first play from scrimmage in the second half and returned it to the Auggie 25. Five plays later, Ambrasas connected for an 8-yard TD pass.
Augsburg backup quarterback
Johnny Goodale was inserted, but he was picked off by UST's Bob Hannah, who returned the interception 36 yards to the Auggie 27. Six plays later, Ambrasas threw a 10-yard TD pass to Hilliard for a 27-7 lead. The Auggies pulled within 27-14 with 14:16 to go on Bramwell's 12-yard reception from Fransen. But Kostner's 5-yard TD run with 5:08 capped an eight-play, 55-yard drive and iced the victory.
Ambrasas completed 16-of-30 passes with one interception for 206 yards and three TDs. Hilliard caught seven passes for 101 yards and Ryan Galindo caught four passes for 43 yards. On defense, the Tommies had four sacks, held Augsburg to 1-for-11 on third-down conversions and just 52 yards passing. Along with his interception, Joslin was in on 11 tackles and John Kaiser and Andy Kaiser were each in on seven tackles.
The Auggies had four turnovers and were called for eight penalties for 107 yards. Bramwell rushed 11 times for 52 yards;
Ben Paul rushed 13 times for 50 yards; and
Mark Johnson had four catches for 33 yards. On defense,
Mitch Theisen led the Auggies with eight tackles (five solo), while
Scott Archambault had seven tackles (four solo) and
Larry Lyden and
Brent Peroutka had six tackles apiece. Peroutka added an interception with a 40-yard return.
Dave Sherry had one sack and three tackles for loss for the Auggies.
AUGSBURG LAST WEEK: Kent Crowley rushed 27 times for 131 yards and three first-half touchdowns, leading St. John's University to a 35-7 win over Augsburg last Saturday at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. St. John's outgained Augsburg by a 423-194 margin to claim its fifth straight win. Augsburg was limited to just 35 rushing yards in the game. Ross Denne threw for 251 yards, completing 21-of-37 passes. Lee Clintsman caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Johnnies scored three touchdowns in the second period to take a 21-7 halftime lead. St. John's outgained Augsburg 151-58 in the deciding period, taking advantage of two interceptions to score on all three of its second-quarter possessions. On the first play of the second quarter, Jason Pflipsen intercepted Augsburg quarterback
Dave Fransen at the St. John's 48-yard line. Four plays later, Crowley scored his first touchdown on a 27-yard run.
Augsburg turned in its best drive of the day on the ensuing drive, going eight plays and 58 yards for its only score of the afternoon, a 12-yard pass from Fransen to
Yarzue Slowon. A Blake Elliott 24-yard kickoff return gave the Johnnies good field position at their own 38, and the Johnnies put on their longest drive of the afternoon, a 14-play, 62-yard drive to give Crowley his second TD of the game, a three-yard run with 3:48 left in the quarter. Pflipsen claimed his second pickoff of the quarter with 2:42 left, giving the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 37. A fourth-down pass from Denne to Clintsman gave the ball at the Augsburg 17, and on the next play, Crowley rushed 17 yards for the touchown with 58 seconds left in the half.
The Auggies could not mount a comeback in the second half, as five of its seven second-half drives ended in punts, with the other two ending in an iterception and a turnover on downs. Meanwhile, the Johnnies scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game away. After an interception by Cole Deibele, the Johnnies marched 58 yards in seven plays, culminating in a Denne one-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Clintsman caught a 14-yard TD pass from Denne with 5:22 left to cap the Johnnie scoring.
Elliott, an All-American candidate at wide receiver, was limited to just 29 receiving yards on six catches, but had 90 return yards (41 on punts, 49 on kickoffs). Josh Nelson caught three passes for 48 yards. Augsburg's Fransen threw for 115 yards, completing 13-of-30 passes with a TD and three interceptions.
Tony George finished the game at quarterback, completing two passes for 44 yards.
Luke Wright caught four passes for 70 yards, while Slowon caught three passes for 25 yards and
Sammy Gross had two catches for 32 yards.
Cam McCambridge led the Johnnie defense with 14 tackles (six solo), while Jeremy Hood had 10 tackles (four solo), including two for loss. Josh Miller had a quarterback sack. Augsburg's defense was led by
Mitch Theisen, who had 13 tackles (one solo).
Brandon Fox had 12 tackles (six solo), and
Jordan Hastings had 11 tackles (four solo).
Kyle Koch had a quarterback sack, and
Major Williams and
Jim Gunderson had interceptions, with Williams adding three pass deflections.
ST. THOMAS LAST WEEK: Junior RB Nick Whitehead (Jr., East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis HS) rushed for 124 yards and the Tommies surpassed 500 yards of total offense in Saturday's 41-7 victory in MIAC football at Carleton. The Tommies scored on their first five possessions and led 34-0 at halftime over the winless Knights. Whitehead, filling in for injured starter Jake Barkley (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who didn't dress, carried the ball 14 times in just over a quarter of action. He scored on a 10-yard scamper to open the game and hauled in a 10-yard pass from Nick Ambrasas (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) late in the first quarter.
The Tommies' offense rolled up 527 yards of total offense and dominated time of possession, 27:24-22:36, including 20:53-9:07 in the first half. Ambrasas was 13 of 15 for 185 yards with one touchdown. He also scored on a 1-yard sneak midway through the first quarter before giving way to back-ups Jesse Baker and Justin Lockrem late in the second quarter. Andrew Hilliard (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) tallied five catches for 52 yards and tight end Jon Learn (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) added two receptions for 76 yards, including a 56-yard scoring pass midway through the second quarter from Ambrasas.
Carleton's Nick Wanka was 13 of 20 for a career-high 148 yards and one touchdown, which was to senior Jonathan Davey for his first career touchdown. Davey ended the afternoon with a career-high four catches for 23 yards. Nate Flaherty added three receptions for 51 yards and Drew Dean posted three catches for 48 yards for Carleton.
OSBERG ONE AWAY FROM TYING SCHOOL WIN RECORD: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. In his 12th season with the Auggies, he now has a 55-63 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just one behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 56 victories (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (44-58-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).
AUGGIES SHUT OUT AT O'SHAUGHNESSY SINCE 1970: O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the venerable old home (since 1948) of the St. Thomas football program, has not been a friendly spot when Augsburg comes across the Mississippi River to face its closest (in travel distance) MIAC rival. In fact, the last time Augsburg won at St. Thomas was in 1966, a 7-0 Auggie win under longtime head coach Edor Nelson (1947-69). Augsburg was St. Thomas' first opponent in the stadium when it opened on Sept. 25, 1948, and the Tommies handed the Auggies a 33-0 shutout.
Since 1948, Augsburg has won just four games in 27 tries at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the last time coming in 1970, a 28-21 Auggie win. The 15-game, 30-year winless streak (dating to 1972) is the longest current road losing streak among MIAC opponents for the Auggies. All-time at St. Thomas since 1928, Augsburg is 4-26. Overall, St. Thomas has won 29 of the last 31 meetings with Augsburg, the last Auggie wins in the series both coming at Augsburg, a 28-7 win in 1995 and a 37-7 win in 1992.
Augsburg came closest to breaking the long streak on Oct. 24, 1998. St. Thomas senior tight end Chris Chappuis -- brother of current Auggie assistant coach
Matt Chappuis -- caught an 18-yard pass from Greg Kaiser and the subsequent two-point conversion in the second overtime as the Tommies overcame a 28-21 overtime deficit to rally past the Auggies, 29-28. Augsburg overcame a 21-3 second-quarter deficit with 28 straight points, including a game-tying one-yard run by Paul Tetzloff -- his second rushing touchdown of the day -- and a two-point conversion pass from Tetzloff to Tim Hamer. The Auggies stopped the Toms on downs in the first overtime but missed a chance to win as Martin Hlinka's 39-yard field goal went wide left. Tetzloff and Hamer connected on a touchdown in Augsburg's half of the second overtime, with Hlinka making the extra point. The Toms came back with the ball at the Auggie 25 and completed two passes, with Chappuis breaking two tackles after his catch to reach the end zone. Instead of going for a kick to try to tie, the Toms went for two and Kaiser hooked up again with Chappuis for the winning two-point score.
The 1998 game featured a couple of milestones, as St. Thomas tied an NCAA record with a 99-yard touchdown pass from Kaiser to Mark Warder in the second period. Auggie wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl went over the 4,000 mark in career receiving yardage, en route to his then-NCAA all-divisions record of 4,696 career yards, a record that has since been broken.
THE "MUDDLE HUDDLE": Augsburg assistant coach Ron Scott, who helps run the special teams, calls it the "Muddle Huddle." It's also been referred to as the "Daffy Duck" formation by other teams. It's the creative formation for extra-point conversion attempts that befuddled Dakota State in the season-opener. Lining up most of the squad -- the linemen and wings -- to the sideline, with just the snapper, quarterback
Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and running back/receiver
Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) in the center of the field, the Auggies claimed three 2-point conversion passes, while kicker
Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) went 2-for-3 when the "Muddle Huddle" shifted to the more conventional PAT kick attempt.
In going 4-for-6 on 2-point conversions this season, the Auggies have already eclipsed their total for all of last year on conversions (1-of-1) and the total is already the most successful season for 2-point conversions for Augsburg since 1988 (5-for-9). Augsburg did not attempt a two-point conversion in games against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, St. Olaf, Gustavus or Concordia-Moorhead. In the Oct. 12 win over Carleton, the Auggies went for two twice, with a George pass intercepted and
T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomas, Wis.) rushing for a conversion.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg is in the midst of a stretch of four games in a row against the top teams in the MIAC -- dropping a 38-13 decision to Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 12, dropping a 35-7 decision to St. John's last Saturday, playing at St. Thomas this Saturday and hosting Bethel next Saturday -- this will truly be the make-or-break period for the men in maroon and gray.
The keys for Augsburg will be getting off to a good start and avoiding mistakes and penalties. Augsburg played a scoreless first quarter against St. John's, but the tide turned quickly in the second period, as the Johnnies scored three times, taking advantage of two interceptions. The Johnnies led 21-7 at halftime and never looked back en route to the 35-7 win.
Penalties have been an achilles heel for the Auggies as well this season. Augsburg was whistled six times for 60 yards against the Johnnies, and have averaged 5.7 flags for 52.3 yards per game this season.
As a team, Augsburg has 14 quarterback sacks this season, led by
Joe Cullen's (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) 2.5. Junior
Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn./William M. Kelley HS) is putting together a potentially all-conference season at defensive tackle, with a team-high 11 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) has five of Augsburg's 12 interceptions this season, with
Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) accounting for two. Matzke has scored twice on defense, with a 60-yard pickoff for a touchdown against Dakota State and a 56-yard punt return for a score against Carleton. Fox currently leads the team with 52 tackles (26 solo), while linebacker
Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) has 40 tackles (12 solo) and defensive back
Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) has 39 tackles (23 solo). Cullen and Harmer have 33 tackles each.
Augsburg's passing offense has been steady all season long, averaging 219.3 yards per game this season, 198.9 per game by quarterback
Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who has shown more confidence in the signal-calling position this season. He has nine touchdowns and seven interceptions this year, averaging 53.8 percent completions with an efficiency rating of 116.33, compared to last year's 98.69.
Augsburg has also cut down on its turnovers this year, with just 13 giveaways (five fumbles lost, eight interceptions), compared to 40 last year (25 interceptions, 15 fumbles lost). Augsburg has a plus-seven advantage on turnovers this season, with 20 takeaways (eight fumbles, 12 interceptions).
Newcomer
Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who returned to college this year after a three-year absence, has been a pleasant surprise at the wide receiver spot. He played the 1998-99 basketball season at North Dakota State, but was a prep all-stater in both football and basketball at Armstrong. So far this year, Slowon is leading the Auggies with 392 receiving yards on 32 catches, a 12.2 yards-per-catch and 65.3 yards-per-game average.
Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), a defensive back last year, has adjusted to his role on the offense this year, averaging 10.2 yards per catch.
Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) has battled injuries, but is still averaging 13.4 yards per reception.
The running back duo of
T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) and
Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) have had hot and cold weeks so far this season, averaging 54.1 and 33.6 yards per game, respectively. Paul is averaging 3.4 yards per carry, while Bramwell is averaging 4.1 yards a carry.
Punter
Nick Schlieman (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) is also putting together an all-conference season. He is currently second in the conference in punting, averaging 7.3 yards per punt. If he keeps up that pace, he could be the first Auggie punter to average over 35.0 yards per punt since Scott Hvistendahl, who averaged 36.7 yards per kick in 1998, 35.6 yards per punt in 1997 and 35.2 yards per punt in 1996. Schlieman has placed eight of his 41 punts inside the 20 and has had 16 punts of 40 yards or more, including three 50-plus-yard punts. He had two 48-yard punts last week against St. John's. Augsburg has yet to try a field goal this season, but kicker
Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) is 15-of-17 on extra points.

NEXT WEEK: Both teams are in action next Saturday (11/2) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts Bethel in the final home game of the year at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Minn., while St. Thomas has its annual battle with St. John's, this year's game at Collegeville, Minn.
