Augsburg gets back on winning track, blasts Carleton 49-6

Football 10/5/02 -- Augsburg 49, Carleton 6

BOXSCORE

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/5/02) -- T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed for a career-high 170 yards -- 139 in the first half -- and two touchdowns to lead Augsburg College to a 49-6 rout of host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Laird Stadium.

Bramwell mixed a career-high 60-yard run with touchdown runs of 10 and two yards in the first quarter, as Augsburg improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC, breaking a three-game losing streak in the process. Carleton drops to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the MIAC, losing its 21st game in a row.

Carleton got on the board first, as quarterback Ben Cooprider (Fr., DeKalb, Ill.) scored on a four-yard run on the Knights' first drive, a 14-play, 64-yard effort.

But after that drive, it was all Augsburg. The Auggies scored on seven of their first eight drives. Bramwell rushed for 29 yards on Augsburg's first drive, including his 10-yard score. After the Auggies got the ball on downs, a seven-play, 84-yard drive, keyed by Bramwell's 60-yard jaunt to the Carleton 15-yard line, later resulted in Bramwell's second touchdown.

On the first play of the second quarter, Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) forced a fumble, which Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn.) recovered and scrambled 49 yards for a touchdown. Augsburg's special teams scored on the next drive, as Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Bramwell rushed for a two-point conversion.

Augsburg continued the scoring assault on its next two drives, as Joe Starks (So., Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) netted his first career touchdown with a one-yard run, and Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) capped the first half with an 11-yard scoring run for his first career touchdown.

Augsburg scored once more in the third quarter, as Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored his second touchdown of the season on a five yard reception from quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), making the score 49-6.

Augsburg put together 457 yards of total offense, including 283 rushing yards, a single-game high this season. Augsburg had 468 yards of total offense in a season-opening 44-14 win over Dakota State (S.D.). Augsburg had to punt just once in the contest, converting 7-of-14 third downs against the Knights.

Meanwhile, the Auggie defense limited Carleton to just 291 yards of total offense, including just 28 rushing yards. Augsburg defenders also sacked Carleton quarterbacks four times.

Fransen completed 11 of 15 passes for 134 yards for the Auggies, one of three quarterbacks used in the game. In additon to Bramwell's 170 rushing yards on 21 carries, Lofboom also had a career single-game high with 68 rushing yards on 12 carries. Slowon caught eight passes for a season-high 103 yards, while Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) caught three passes for 39 yards.

Cooprider threw for 216 yards for the Knights, completing 20 of 34 passes with two interceptions. Carleton threw three interceptions in the game. Matzke scored his fifth interception of the season, and Jake Schmiesing (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and John Golnitz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) also had pickoffs.

Erik Fisher (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.) led the Knights with 38 rushing yards on 10 carries and 73 receiving yards on five catches. Drew Dean (Sr., Madison, Wis./West HS) had five catches for 72 yards.

Defensively, Harmer led the Auggies with seven tackles (three solo), while Luke Carlson (Jr., Darwin, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Fox had six tackles apiece. Andy Stephenson (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) had five tackles.

Carleton was led defensively by Ben Phillips (So., Woodstock, Ill.) and Andrew Wild (Jr., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS), who had nine tackles apiece.

Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (10/12) at 1 p.m., Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and Carleton playing at St. John's.

Football 10/5/02 -- Augsburg at Carleton Game Notes

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (1-3 overall, 0-2 MIAC) play at the Carleton College Knights (0-4 overall, 0-3 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m., at Laird Stadium (capacity 7,500) in Northfield, Minn.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 12th season and currently has a 54-61 career mark. Carleton coach Chris Brann (West Virginia Wesleyan '91) is in his second season and is 0-14 overall.

RADIO: Augsburg games are broadcast on KCCO-AM 950, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. Because of broadcast restrictions, Auggie football games will not able to be cybercast on the Internet this season. Carleton games are broadcast on KRDS 95.5 FM of Faribault, Minn., and can be heard on the Internet at the following address: http://www.carleton.edu/campus/athletics/Audio/.

SERIES: This is the 22nd game in the all-time series between Augsburg and Carleton, a series the Knights lead 12-9. Augsburg has won the last five games in a row in the series, and Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 6-5 in his career against Gustavus. The teams began the series in 1978, when Carleton was a member of the Midwest Conference. Augsburg and Carleton played in 1978 and 1979, and have played every season since 1983, when Carleton rejoined the MIAC.

LAST YEAR: Mark Johnson tied an Augsburg school record with four touchdown receptions, including three for 40 yards or more, as the Auggies rolled over Carleton 52-21 on Sept. 15, 2001 at Carleton. The Auggies had three touchdowns in first eight minutes and scored on their first six drives, rolling up 202
yards of total offense in the first 15 minutes. Augsburg relied on a stifling defense that held the Knights to nine yards on five first-quarter drives. The Auggies converted all five of their fourth-down conversions. The Auggies amassed 444 total yards to Carleton's 269. Johnson ended up with eight catches for 227 yards. Quarterback Dave Fransen, making just his second collegiate start, looked sharp, completing 16 of 22 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns, one off the school single-game record of six, set by Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against St. Olaf. He completed his first seven straight passes to start the game.

Augsburg opened the scoring on its third play from scrimmage, when Fransen found Johnson on a 47-yard scoring strike. After a Carleton punt was blocked by Kyle Koch, the Auggies scored one play later, when Ben Paul found the end zone on a seven-yard run. Augsburg's next drive of the first quarter was capped when Fransen found Johnson in the corner of the end zone on a 24-yard fade pattern on fourth-down and five. Another pretty pass from Fransen to Johnson, this time for 40 yards, gave the Auggies a 28-0 first-quarter cushion. Augsburg scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter, both from T.J. Bramwell, who scored on a 10-yard rush and a five-yard pass from Fransen. Augsburg spread around the ball on the ground and gained 177 yards, with nine different Auggies handling the ball. Chris Boyer's 40 yards on seven carries led the Auggies.

An interception by Issac Kieffer on Augsburg's 40 yard-line gave the Knights an opportunity to get on the scoreboard, with a two-yard touchdown run by Robert Von Glahn to make the score 42-7 at the half. Augsburg added a 29-yard field goal from Tim Mauseth and a 41-yard pass from Fransen to Johnson in the third
quarter to push the lead up to 52-7. Mauseth hit his seventh PAT of the game to tie a single-game school record, and the touchdown pushed Augsburg over 50
points for only the fourth time in school history. Augsburg's single-game scoring record is 56 points, set in a 1997 win over Bethel. The Knights came back quickly with a three-play drive which was capped off with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Jon Groteboer to Steve Nuessle. Groteboer scrambled for another touchdown to end the scoring.

Dave Sherry picked up two sacks for the Auggie defense. Luke Wittrock led the Auggies with 5.5 tackles (five solo), while Andy Stephenson had 4.5 tackles (four solo). Scott O'Reilly did it all for the Knights on the defensive end, picking up a sack, and interception, and 12 total tackles, including nine solo. Defensive lineman Jake Hodgson recorded 10.5 tackles and linebacker Wild racked up nine tackles and a sack. Von Glahn picked up 68 yards on 14 carries and picked up his third touchdown of the year. Groteboer threw for 180 yards on 17 of 32 passing and a touchdown. Nuessle caught three balls for 70 yards to lead the Knights' receiving corps.

AUGSBURG LAST WEEK: Andy Traetow rushed for 192 yards, and Ryan Hoag caught five passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns, leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a 41-14 rout of host Augsburg in the Auggies' homecoming game last Saturday at Edor Nelson Field, as Augsburg deropped its third game in a row. Quarterback Sean Smith threw for 238 yards and four scores, going 16-for-19 for the Gusties. Smith completed his final 12 passes in a row, not missing a pass after the first quarter. He directed a Gustie offense that put together 472 yards (234 rush, 238 pass) of total offense, compared to just 276 yards (182 passing, 94 rushing) for Augsburg.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Gusties exploded on offense, scoring touchdowns on six of seven drives the rest of the way. The Gusties accomplished this feat by pulling some trickery, including converting first downs on two fake punts. The first fake punt, a direct snap to the up-man Traetow, was converted into a 33-yard gain on fourth down and 2 at the Gustavus 39. Three plays later, Smith put the Gusties on the board, with a 23-yard scoring pass to Hoag. Augsburg turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, and Gustavus converted again, taking advantage of a third-down, roughing-the-passer penalty againt Augsburg. Four plays later, Smith found the end zone himself, rushing one yard for a score.

Limited to 11 yards rushing in the first half, Augsburg opened the second half with a 15-play, 52-yard drive -- 51 yards on the ground -- capped by a one-yard touchdown by Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) midway through the third quarter. But the Gusties scored twice in the final four minutes of the third period to put the game out of reach. A 35-yard pass from Smith to Hoag gave the Gusties good field position, and four plays laser, Smith found Hoag with a five-yard scoring strike with 4:42 remaining. On Gustavus' next drive, they used another fake punt rush by Traetow to set up another Smith-to-Hoag score, this one a 32-yard scoring strike with seven seconds left in the frame. On Gustavus' first drive of the fourth quarter, a 38-yard rush by Traetow set up the Gusties' next score, a 20-yard pass from Smith to Adam Britz. Augsburg scored on its next drive, as Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). But the Gusties closed the game with another score, as another long run by Traetow, a 42-yard gain, set up a Jeff Pelant five-yard score with 5:41 left in the game.

Augsburg's Fransen completed 12-for-17 passes for 154 yards, including six passes for 86 yards to Slowon. Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) caught two passes for 62 yards. T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed 16 timnes for 52 yards, while Paul rushed 13 times for 48 yards. Augsburg's defense was led by Jordan Hastings (Fr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who had 5.0 tackles (three solo) and an interception. John Golintz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 4.5 tackles (one solo), as did Luke Carlson (Jr., Darwin, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) with two solo markers. On special teams, Hoag also had a blocked punt in the first quarter.

CARLETON LAST WEEK: Concordia-Moorhead stormed from the gates, scoring 34 points in the first quarter en route to a 51-7 win over Carleton last Saturday at Concordia. The first five Concordia drives netted touchdowns, each taking less than 1:30 off the clock. Bobby Clark put the first two scores on the board, running in from seven yards out with 13:31 left in the first quarter, then running in another from six yards out with 10:02 left. Quarterback Ryan Hebrink scored from 18 yards out with 7:53 to go, then Clark notched his third TD of the game on an 18-yard scamper with 6:29 left. Touchdowns by Jacob Ocerman (five yards) and Paul Nelson (nine yards) gave the Cobbers a 41-0 halftime lead.

The Cobbers scored one more touchdown to start the second half on a 32-yard run with 13:24 left in the third by Hebrink. A 34-yard field goal by Brian Halverson capped Concordia's scoring early in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Drew Dean (Sr., Madison, Wis./West HS) broke loose for a 65-yard return, setting up a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ben Cooprider (Fr., DeKalb, Ill.) to Erik Fisher (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.), for Carleton's only score of the game.

Cooprider was 8 of 18 passing for 43 yards for the Knights. Concordia outgained Carleton by a 445-60 margin in total offense, limiting the Knights to minus-2 yards rushing. Carleton had 48 positive yards rushing, but lost 43 yards on three qaurterback sacks. Fisher caught three passes for 24 yards. Andrew Wild (Jr., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) and Nick Brokke (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) led Carleton's defense with 7.5 tackles each. Doug Lind (Fr., Braham, Minn.) had his best game as a Knight, registering 6.5 tackles, 2.5 for losses. Ben Olson (So., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) forced and recovered a fumble.

AUGSBURG IN NORTHFIELD: This is the first time since the 1998 season that Augsburg will play both Northfield schools -- St. Olaf and Carleton -- in Northfield. The Auggies lost 23-21 at St. Olaf on Sept. 21 and play at Carleton on Saturday. Playing both Northfield schools in Northfield in the same season has happened just five times previously -- 1978, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 1998, the Auggies made history by winning both games in Northfield for the first time and breaking long road losing streaks in the process, 70 years at St. Olaf and 20 years at Carleton. In the all-time series between Augsburg and St. Olaf, Augsburg has won just twice at Manitou Field -- 13-0 in 1928 and 31-24 in 1998. At Carleton's Laird Stadium, Augsburg has won just three times -- 28-7 in 1978, 31-28 in 1998 and 52-21 in 2001. All-time in Northfield, Augsburg is 5-25 -- 2-18 at St. Olaf and 3-7 at Carleton.

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) had 34 completions for 405 yards against St. Olaf on Sept. 21. The 34 completions is the fifth-most in a single game in Division III this season; Scott Kello of Sul Ross State (La.) completed 44 passes in a game against Louisiana College on Sept. 21 to lead the nation. Defensive back Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) is ranked seventh nationally in interceptions per game (1.0, four total).

OSBERG CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL WINS RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. In his 12th season with the Auggies, he now has a 54-61 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just two behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 56 victories (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (43-56-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).

THE "MUDDLE HUDDLE": Augsburg assistant coach Ron Scott, who helps run the special teams, calls it the "Muddle Huddle." It's also been referred to as the "Daffy Duck" formation by other teams. It's the creative formation for extra-point conversion attempts that befuddled Dakota State in the season-opener. Lining up most of the squad -- the linemen and wings -- to the sideline, with just the snapper, quarterback Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and running back/receiver Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) in the center of the field, the Auggies claimed three 2-point conversion passes, while kicker Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) went 2-for-3 when the "Muddle Huddle" shifted to the more conventional PAT kick attempt. Last week against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Auggies shifted to the traditional kick formation on each of its two scores. The first PAT attempt was a high snap, which forced a run attempt, and the other kick was good. In going 3-for-4 on 2-point conversions, the Auggies have already eclipsed their total for all of last year on conversions (1-of-1) and the total is already the most successful season for 2-point conversions for Augsburg since 1988 (5-for-9). Augsburg has not attempted a two-point conversion in the last three games, against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, St. Olaf or Gustavus.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: After a season-opening, 44-14 win over Dakota State (S.D.), the Auggies have strugled, dropping their last three games in a row to fall to 1-3 overall. Will winless Carleton will be a balm for the Auggies' wounds? Augsburg has won the last five seasons in a row over the Knights, scoring 31 or more points in four of the five wins; hopefully the cure for an Auggie offense that has been outscored 101-48 the last three weeks.

Augsburg has been outgained by an average of 381.0 to 359.8 this season. Augsburg's passing offense has averaged 256.0 yards per game this season, 243.5 per game by quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who has shown more confidence in the signal-calling position than last year. He has five touchdowns and four interceptions this year, averaging 54.5 percent completions with an efficiency rating of 121.88, compared to last year's 98.69. Twelve different Auggies have caught passes this season, led by the speedy Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who is averaging 26.3 yards per catch and 85.5 yards receiving per game. He's topped the century mark in receiving twice -- with two TD catches for 142 yards against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and seven catches for 107 yards (one TD) against St. Olaf.

The running back duo of Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) and T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) came into the season with high hopes, but need to break a three-game slump. After Paul rushed for 81 yards and Bramwell rushed for 85 yards in the Dakota State game, neither back has rushed for more than 52 yards in a single game. Paul is averaging 4.2 yards per carry, while Bramwell is averaging 3.9 yards a carry.

Punter Nick Schlieman (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) has been a pleasant surprise for the Auggies, averaging 37.4 yards per punt. If he keeps up that pace, he could be the first Auggie punter to average over 35.0 yards per punt since Scott Hvistenadhl, who averaged 36.7 yards per kick in 1998, 35.6 yards per punt in 1997 and 35.2 yards per punt in 1996.

Defensively, Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) has four of Augsburg's seven interceptions this season, with Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) accounting for two. Fox has 18.5 total tackles (11 solo), while defensive back Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) leads the team with 24.5 tackles (17 solo). Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rap8ids, Minn.) leads the Auggies with 2.5 sacks.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: This is Carleton's Homecoming weekend, and the Knights are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 1992 Carleton MIAC championship, one of only two MIAC titles in Carleton history (the other was in 1924). In 1992, Carleton topped Augsburg 38-28, one of 11 straight wins for the Knights over the Auggies. Would Saturday's celebration be the perfect time for the Knights to pick up their first win for second-year head coach Chris Brann (0-14)? Carleton's last win came on Sept. 30, 2000, a 27-14 win at Macalester; Carleton has lost its last 20 games in a row and is 7-47 since the 1997 season; 1-23 since 2000.

This year, of the 51 players on the current Carleton roster, more than half -- 28-- are freshmen, with just eight seniors, seven juniors and eight sophomores. And it's been showing in the results. In their first four games, Carleton has been outscored 176-27 -- an average of 44.0 to 6.8 per game. Opponents have outgained Carleton by an average of 415.8 to 136.8. Rushing has been basically nonexistent for the Knights, who are averaging just 16.0 yards of rushing per game.

Offensively, quarterback Ben Cooprider (Fr., DeKalb, Ill.) has started all four games for the Knights, as the first MIAC freshman quarterback to start at the beginning of the conference season in nearly the decade. Augsburg's Derrin Lamker started the first two games of the 1993 season, but was injured and missed the remainder of the year, later leading the Auggies to the 1997 MIAC title. Cooprider is averaging just 55.5 yards passing per game.

Defensively, linebacker Andrew Wild (Jr., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) leads the team on the season with 28 total tackles and three forced fumbles. Last week's game marked the second time this season Wild has led the team in tackles. Cornerback Nick Brokke (Fr., Roseville, Minn./Ramsey HS) leads the team with two interceptions, one of which he returned 92 yards for a touchdown. Besides having nine tackles against Concordia, Luke Muellerleile (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) also handled punting duties, which he performed admirably, including a 56-yard punt that nearly topped his career long of 61 yards. Senior Erik Fisher (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.) has scored two touchdowns in four games, including his first career touchdown. He is the team's top rusher on the year. Drew Dean (Sr., Madison, Wis./West HS), who had a 65-yard kickoff return against Concordia last week, averages 20.1 yards per kick return. He is also the Knights' punt returner, his best return being an 18-yarder against St. Olaf.

NEXT WEEK: Both teams are in action next Saturday (10/12) at 1 p.m. Augsburg plays at Concordia-Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn., while Carleton plays at St. John's in Collegeville, Minn.
