Wrestling 11/23/02 -- Augsburg at Concordia-Moorhead Cobber Open 

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/23/02) -- Augsburg College wrestlers, competing unattached, earned seven titles Saturday at the Concordia College-Moorhead Cobber Open on Saturday at Concordia.

Greg Brendemuehl (Fr., Medford, Minn.) went 3-0 to win the title at 125 pounds, while Jamell Tidwell (So., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) earned the title at 141, going 5-0 with a pin.

At 149, Clarke Athman (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn.) and Ryan Stroud (So., Park Falls, Wis.) shared the title, each going 3-0. Stroud had a pin among his wins.

Chris McAlpine (So., Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) shared the title at 157, going 3-0 with a major decision.

At 197, Ricky Crone * (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Andy Fraley (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) shared the title. Crone went 2-0 with a major decision, and Fraley also went 2-0.

Augsburg wrestlers placing second were Jared Evans (Fr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) at 133, Joe Moon * (So., Ellendale, Minn./NR-H-E-G HS) at 174, Josh Barlage (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) at 197 and Mike Flanagan (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) at heavyweight.

Augsburg wrestlers earning consolation titles were Mark Matzek (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) at 133, Josh Erlandson (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) at 149, Vince DePatto (Jr., Big Lake, Minn./Monticello HS) at 174, Rich Miller (So., Anoka, Minn.) at 184 and Justin Sorensen (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.) at 197.

Augsburg, winners of eight of the last 12 NCAA Division III national titles and the last three straight, is ranked third in the preseason NCAA Division III national rankings. Augsburg will carry a 25-match dual-meet winning streak into its next action, a dual meet against top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) on Wednesday (11/27) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. The Auggie White Team (JV) will face Itasca Community College at 6 p.m. Augsburg has won 71 straight matches against NCAA Division III opponents.
