Augsburg takes 2nd at St. Cloud State Invitational; White team takes 4th at Dick Walker (Wartburg) Invite.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/14/02) -- Jamell Tidwell (So., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) and Joe Moon * (So., Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) earned individual championships for Augsburg College, as the Auggies placed second to North Dakota State University at the St. Cloud State University Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Augsburg had two champions and three runner-ups in the St. Cloud State tournament, which annually attracts the top competition among Division II and III teams in the Midwest. North Dakota State, last year's Division II national runner-up, finished with 132.5 points, while Augsburg, winners of eight of the last 12 Division III national titles and the last three in a row, finished second with 127.0 points. It was the third season in a row that North Dakota State has edged Augsburg in the St. Cloud State meet.

Meanwhile, Augsburg's White Team (junior varsity) placed fourth at the Wartburg College Dick Walker Invitational on Saturday in Waverly, Iowa. The Auggies had 54 points, with Wartburg, the top-ranked team in Division III, placing first wtih 177 points.

In three head-to-head meetings in championship matches at St. Cloud, North Dakota State claimed two victories while Augsburg had one.

Tidwell, ranked fourth in the latest Division III national rankings at 141 pounds, remained unbeaten at 20-0 with his four wins, including a 3-0, championship-match win over NDSU's Matt Bitz.

Moon, ranked sixth in the Division III national rankings at 174, returned to action after a two-week absence and won his weight class, going 4-0 with a pin and 13-1, major-decision win in the championship match.

Mark Matzek (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) placed second for Augsburg at 133, dropping a 5-2 decision in the title match to NDSU's Nick Magee. He had a technical fall among his wins.

Ryan Stroud (So., Park Falls, Wis.) went 3-1 in placing second at 149, falling 3-1 to NDSU's Zach Stevens in the final. Stroud had a pin among his wins.

Ricky Crone * (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked third nationally in Division III at 184, was upset 3-2 by Northern State (S.D.) wrestler Joey Krause in the title match. Crone had a technical-fall and pin among his three wins at 184.

Greg Brendemuehl (Fr., Medford, Minn.) and Billy Morgan (So., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) placed third for Augsburg at 125 and 165, respectively, while Chris McAlpine (So., Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) took fourth at 157. Mike Flanagan (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) placed fifth at heavyweight and Josh Barlage (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) took sixth at 197.

Augsburg had 15 wrestlers compete at the Dick Walker meet at Wartburg. Andy Fraley (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Josh Erlandson (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) placed third for the Auggies at 184 and 149, respectively, while Rob Doliber (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) placed fourth at 165 and Justin Sorensen (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.) placed fourth at 197. Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) placed fifth at 197 and Rich Miller (So., Anoka, Minn.) placed fifth at 197.

Augsburg returns to action with its annual holiday-break trip to Florida for the Orange Bowl Sunshine Open, Dec. 28-29 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
