Augsburg has eight champions, 16 placewinners at Minnesota-Morris Cougar Open.

MORRIS, Minn. (12/7/02) -- Augsburg College claimed eight champions and had 16 placewinners in wrestling action at the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougar Open on Saturday. Augsburg wrestlers competed as unattached entries at the open.

Jamell Tidwell (So., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) improved to 15-0 by winning the 141-pound weight class, going 5-0 on the day. He had a pin and major decision in his action. Also remaining unbeaten on the season was 149-pounder Josh Erlandson (So., Ellsworth, Wis.), who improved to 12-0 on the season by claiming the 149-pound title. Erlandson was 4-0 on the day.

Chris McAlpine (So., Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) improved to 8-2 on the year with three wins and the co-title at 157. Mark Matzek (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) and Jared Evans (Fr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) shared the title at 133. Evans had two pins, while Matzek had a first-period pin, a major-decision and a third-period technical fall.

Ricky Crone * (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) improved to 9-2 by winning the 184-pound weight class, going 3-0. He had a 30-second pin and 7-0 win among his triumphs. Josh Barlage (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) also won his weight class, going 3-0 at 197 pounds.

Heavyweight Mike Flanagan (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) easily won his weight class, with two first-period pins in his semifinal and final matches, and a major-decision win in going 4-0. Flanagan is now 12-2 overall.

Placing second for Augsburg was 125-pounder Greg Brendemuehl (Fr., Medford, Minn.) and 165-pounder Billy Morgan (So., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS).

Matt Fraley (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) placed third at 165. Placing fourth was Rob Doliber (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) at 157, Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) at 197 and Matt Michelson (Fr., Waukee, Iowa) at heavyweight.

Justin Sorensen (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.) placed fifth at 197 and Logan Kling (Fr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) placed sixth at heavyweight.

Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (12/10) with a dual meet against Southwest State University. Match time is 7 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
