Wrestling 2/8/02 -- Augsburg 29, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 9
MINNEAPOLIS (2/8/02) -- The top-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team extended its consecutive-match winning streak to 23, and won its 71st straight match against a fellow NCAA Division III opponent, as the Auggies cruised to a 29-9 dual-meet victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference meet Friday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

In improving to 15-0 in dual meets this season, Augsburg won its 23rd straight match. Augsburg's last dual-meet loss was a 35-4 loss to Division I Oregon on Jan. 12, 2001. Augsburg's last loss to a Division III foe was a 26-16 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Feb. 11, 1994.

The two-time defending NCAA Division III national champions and winners of seven of the last 11 national crowns, the top-ranked Auggies are now 196-13 against Division III opponents since the 1979-80 season and 120-3 since the 1989-90 season.

Augsburg claimed two technical falls and a major decision to cruise to the easy win over the Pointers, winning eight of the 10 matches. Augsburg leads the all-time series with Wisconsin-Stevens Point 9-1 and has won the last eight duals in a row.

Nick Slack * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in Division III at 174 pounds, opened the match with a third-period technical fall, 20-5 victory over UWSP's Jamie Schultz (So., Loyal, Wis.). Slack, now 34-1 overall this season, has lost just two matches in the last two-plus seasons.

Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) also claimed a technical fall win at 157, an impressive 18-1 victory in the first period over Craig Resch (Fr., Wittenberg, Wis.). Jamell Tidwell (Fr., Richfeld, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) improved to 24-4 on the season with a 10-2, major-decision win at 149.

The Pointers earned a forfeit and won the only meeting of ranked wrestlers. Yan White (So., Antigo, Wis.), ranked fifth in Division III at 197, upset Augsburg's top-ranked Kevin Rasmussen (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) 8-4.

Augsburg's Mike Flanagan (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), wrestling in just his sixth Augsburg match after transferring mid-season from the University of Minnesota, claimed a 2-1, second-overtime win at heavyweight over UWSP's Mark Burger (Jr., Merrill, Wis.).

Ricky Crone (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn., 184 pounds) and Tony Abbott * (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS, 165 pounds), both ranked second in the country in their respective weight classes, claimed victories, along with top-ranked John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) at 125 and fourth-ranked Brad Fisher * (Sr., Austin, Minn.) at 141.

Augsburg completes its dual-meet season on Sunday (2/10) at 2 p.m. Division II South Dakota State. Since 1989-90, Augsburg is 164-7 against opponents from Divisions II and III, and has lost just twice to Division II foes since the 1995-96 season.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday (2/9) with two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meets, at 12 noon at Wisconsin-River Falls, and at 4 p.m. at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
