MINNEAPOLIS (3/21/02) -- Matt Fetsch (Jr., Calvin, N.D.) singled in the eventual game-winning run in the second inning of the first game, and Craig Hern (Fr., Medicine Hat, Alberta) went 3-for-3 in the second game, scoring four runs and driving in two, as Mayville State University (N.D.) swept Augsburg College in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Thursday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Mayville State won the first game 2-0 and the second game 12-0.
Mayville State improves to 7-3 on the season with the victories. Augsburg, in its last games at the Metrodome before its spring break trip to Florida, drops to 3-7 on the season.
The first game was a pitchers' duel between starters Phil Medina (Jr., Delores, Colo.) of Mayville State and
Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) of Augsburg. Median, pitching three innings, allowed just one hit and three walks; Rathmann, pitching five innings, allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out four.
Mike Lorz (So., Fargo, N.D.) opened the second inning with a walk for Mayville State, and moved to second after a teammate reached on an error. Fetsch singled in Lorz with the game's first run. The Comets scored again in the sixth off of Auggie reliever
Travis Akre (Jr., Winona, Minn.), when Hern singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error.
Augsburg was limited to just three hits in the game, including a double by
Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.). The Auggies stranded four runners on base in the game.
Mike Czerwieniec (Fr., Windsor, Ontario) relieved Medina and struck out two Auggies while allowing just one hit. Greg Lunski (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) picked up the save in the seventh for the Comets.
A five-run first inning, as Mayville State sent 11 hitters to the plate, put the second game out of reach early. The Comets took advantage of three Augsburg errors and scored five unearned runs off of Auggie starter
Adam Jensen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), who lasted just two-thirds of an inning. A two-run single by Chris Hills (Fr., Fairmount, N.D.) was the highlight of the inning.
Mayville State added two runs in the second, on a run-scoring double from Josh McMenamy (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) and a fielder's choice by Dave Pearson (Sr., Fargo, N.D.). Another run came across in the fourth, when Pearson brought in Hern on a sacrifice fly.
Four runs were scored in the fifth inning, as Richard Dean (Sr., Langley, B.C.) drove in a run on a single, Hern tripled to drive in two runs and later scored on a wild pitch.
Jay O'Conner (Jr., New Rockford, N.D.) pitched three innings for Mayville State, allowing just two Auggie hits. Chad Fyre (So., Portland, N.D.) pitched four innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Augsburg used six pitchers in the game, though just six of the 12 runs allowed were earned.
Augsburg committed four errors in each game.
Augsburg travels to Fort Myers, Fla., for eight games in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic from March 23-30. Augsburg's first contest is a single game against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on Saturday (3/23) at 7 p.m. Mayville State faces Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday (3/22) at 11:30 a.m. at the Metrodome.
