FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/24/02) -- Oberlin College rallied from a 5-0 deficit with seven runs in the final four innings, claiming a 7-5 win over Augsburg College at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament on Sunday morning at Terry Park.
Oberlin improved to 4-3 with the win. Augsburg drops to 3-9, having lost its last five games in a row.
Augsburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings.
Joe Holman (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) drove in
Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) on a single in the second ininng, then
Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) tripled to drive in
Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) in the third. Augsburg added three runs in the fourth, when
Tony Marsh (Fr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) singled to drive in Holman, Huebner reached base on an error to bring in Marsh, and Krautkremer singled to drive in a run.
But the Yeomen rallied, scoring four runs in the sixth. Andrew Caprariello drov in two runs on a single, and two runs came across after a one-out fielding error.
Another run came across in the seventh, as Ian Haynes scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Oberlin took the lead for good in the eighth, when Zachary Pretzer singled to drive in two runs.
Robert Smith pitched a complete-game, nine-inning win for Oberlin, striking out four while walking three.
Augsburg fell victim to errors again, as the Auggies committed five errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs.
Jeremy Nelson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched well over the first six innings, striking out four while walking two. Reliever
Collin Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) was tagged with the loss.
At the plate, Nash led the Auggies, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Holman went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Krautkremer had two hits. Caprariello led the Yeomen with a 3-for-5 performance, scoring twice. Pretzer and Kyle Neumerier had two hits apiece.
Augsburg returns to action in the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday (3/25), facing Clarke (Iowa) at 10 a.m.
