Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI, scoring three runs to lead Augsburg College to a 9-3 victory over Fontbonne College (Mo.) in a Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball game on Friday morning at Cape Coral Field.
Augsburg improved to 5-12 overall, while Fontbonne dropped to 5-11.
Sherry's RBI double opened the scoring for the Auggies in the second inning, and he hit a solo home run in the fifth. Augsburg had five extra-base hits in the game, pounding out 12 hits to Fontbonne's three.
Starting pitcher
Jeremy Nelson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) allowed just three hits in four innings of work, while
Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits, just one walk and striking out two.
Sherry's double drove in
Adam Larson (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), and an RBI single from
Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) plated Sherry in the second.
Augsburg put four runs across the plate in the fourth inning, as Huebner singled in Sherry,
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) singled home
Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) and
Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) doubled to drive in Marsh and Huebner.
Three runs were scored in the fifth, when Sherry hit his solo home run and Rathmann doubled, driving in Huebner and Gross.
Fontbonne scored twice in the second, when Jesse Walters hit an RBI single and later scored on a double-steal attempt. One run was scored in the fourth, when Luke Wilson hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Krautkremer,
Collin Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Huebner had two hits apiece, while Gross scored twice. Huebner, Krautkremer and Rathmann had two RBI each.
Justin Wondolwski started and allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- for Fontbonne, with Chad Harrison striking out two in 2.2 innings of relief.
Augsburg finishes its play in the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday (3/30), facing Edgewood (Wis.) at 10 a.m.
