Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI as Augsburg College closed its week of baseball games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 11-10 triumph over Edgewood College (Wis.) Saturday morning at Terry Park.
Augsburg improved to 6-12 overall with its second straight win, finishing its eight-game Florida swing with a 3-5 mark.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Auggies scored their 11 runs over the next four frames to take a 11-5 lead after six innings. Edgewood rallied with one run in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth, but relief pitcher
Travis Akre (Jr., Winona, Minn.) came in and threw a bases-loaded strikeout with two outs in the ninth to collect the save and preserve the Auggie victory.
The Auggies put four runs on the board in the third inning, when Krautkremer drove in two runs on a single,
Jon Kozitza (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) brought in a run by reaching on a two-out fielding error, and
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) drove in a run on a double.
Three runs came across inthe fifth, as Krautkremer singled to drive in a run, and
Adam Larson (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) drove in two runs on a single. Four more were scored in the sixth, as
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) hit a two-run single, Krautkremer hit a run-scoring triple and Kozitza singled to bring across a run.
Edgewood scored twice in both the first and second innings. Travis Krahn tripled in a run and Pat Kelter singled in a run in the first, and Adam Hammes doubled and Matt Saltzberry hit a suicide squeeze bunt to bring runs across in the second. Jason Cuyler hit a run-scoring single in the seventh, Hammes hit a solo home run in the seventh and Ryan Klemko hit a three-run home run in the eighth.
In the ninth, the first two Edgewood batters flied out and grounded out to open the inning against Auggie reliever
Joe Pontrelli (So., Eagan, Minn.). But after Saltzberry singled, Pontrelli was pulled for reliever
Matt Topp (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) Three straight walks brought Saltzberry home to cut the lead to one run. Akre came into the game and struck out the last batter for the win.
Augsburg used five pitchers in the game, with starter
Isaac Schmidt (Fr., Luverne, Minn.), going five innings and striking out five. He picked up the win.
Russ Bauer (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched two-thirds of an inning before Pontrelli relieved him. Pontrelli struck out one while walking two in three innings of work.
Edgewood used three pitchers, with Adam Verberne getting tagged with the loss. He struck out three in five innings of work.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Carleton on Wednesday (4/3) at 2:30 p.m.
