GAME 2 BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (3/5/02) -- Joe Schallenberger (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI in the first game, and had a fielder's choice to bring in the game-winning run in the sixth inning of the second game Tuesday night, as Concordia University-St. Paul swept Augsburg College in a nonconference baseball doubleheader at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Concordia won the first game 15-10 and the second game 5-4. The second game was just six innings long, due to time constraints at the Metrodome.
Schallenberger hit two towering home runs in the first game, a two-run homer to deep left field in the first inning, and a three-run, 400-foot-plus homer to center field in the seventh inning that squelched an Auggie rally.
Division III Augsburg drops to 2-2 with the losses. The games were Division II Concordia-St. Paul's first of the season.
The Golden Bears built leads of 9-0 and 12-2 before Augsburg rallied with eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close the gap to 12-10, before Schallenberger's three-run homer stopped the rally in the seventh.
Bobby Dennis (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) hit a two-run homer in the third inning for Concordia, and Nate Kolasa (Fr., Tempe, Ariz.) had two doubles. Rob Higgins (Sr., Maplewood, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game.
Augsburg began its comeback in the fourth inning, when
Jon Kozitza (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) drove in a run and
Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) drove in a run on a double.
Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) drove in two runs on a double in the fifth inning, Kozitza drove in another run on a groundout and
Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) brought in a run on a single. Four more runs came in during the sixth inning, one on a single from Sherry, another on a single from Kozitza and two more on a double from Rathmann.
Dennis pitched four innings, sriking out five, to pick up the first-game pitching win for Concordia, with Andrew Wehr (So., New Brighton, Minn.) and Higgins pitching in relief.
Adam Jensen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) took the loss for the Auggies in three innings of work, with
Isaac Schmidt (Fr., Luverne, Minn.) pitching in relief.
Augsburg put three runs on the board in the first inning of the second game, as
Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) drove in a run on a single and Kozitza had a two-run single. Concordia cut the lead in the bottom of the first, behind a two-run single from Lee Brandel (Sr., Lafayette, Minn.).
Concordia tied the game in the fourth, when a David Schlundt (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) single was bobbled in center field, the error allowing a run to score. But Augsburg took the lead back in the top of the fifth, when Krautkremer hit a solo home run to right field.
The Golden Bears won the game in the bottom of the sixth, as three straight singles and a fielding error tied the game, and after a walk, Schallenberger hit a two-out ground ball to third base that was fumbled on the throw, allowing the game-winning run to score.
Pat Aubinger (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the pitching win for Concordia, striking out three.
Matt Topp (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) started for Augsburg and lasted three innings.
Russ Bauer (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched in relief, but none of the three runs scored while he pitched were earned. He had two strikeouts.
