ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/13/02) -- Chris Carroll (So., Shoreview, Minn./Roseville HS) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game, and Travis Wermedal (Fr., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) drove in the game-winning run on a single in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game, as host Bethel College swept Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Hargis Park, 2-1 and 2-1.
Bethel improves to 6-14 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC with the sweep, while Augsburg drops to 7-17 overall and 1-5 in the MIAC, having dropped its last five games in a row, all in league play.
Both games featued complete-game pitching performances by both teams. In the first game, Ryan Holland (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) struck out two while not walking a batter for Bethel, while
Jeremy Nelson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) struck out five while not walking a batter and allowing just five hits for the Auggies. In the second game, Jason Steffenhagen (So., Maple Plain, Minn./Orono HS) struck out three while walking one and allowing four hits to get the Bethel win, while
Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) struck out three while walking one and allowing five hits for Augsburg.
In the first game, Bethel opened the scoring in the first inning, when Jon Gaylord (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) came across on a passed ball. Augsburg tied the game in the third, when
Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) doubled to drive in
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). In the fourth, Bethel's Peter Harrell (Fr., Minnetrista, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) opened the frame with a double, and came across on Carroll's RBI single for the eventual game-winning run.
Gaylord and Carroll went 2-for-3 to lead Bethel in the first game, while Krautkremer and Marsh went 2-for-3 to lead Augsburg.
Both teams scored in the first inning of the second game. Krautkremer hit a solo home run, his team-high fifth of the season, to give the Auggies the early lead, but Carroll reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Gaylord in the bottom of the first for Bethel. In the sixth, Carroll hit a two-out double and came across on Wermedal's RBI single to give Bethel its 2-1 lead.
Wermedal went 2-for-3 to lead Bethel. Augsburg's four hits were spread across four different hitters.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Sunday (4/14) at 1 p.m., hosting defending NCAA Division III national champion St. Thomas in a rescheduled doubleheader at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. Bethel returns to action on Wednesday (4/17), hosting St. John's in an MIAC doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
