NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/7/02) -- Tony LePage (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) and Kyle Udseth (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) each had two-run singles in a five-run fourth inning as host Carleton College won the second game of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader, beating Augsburg College, 6-2. Augsburg, behind a two-run homer from Ryan Krautkremer (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) and two doubles from Nick Rathmann (Jr., Waseca, Minn.), won the first game of the doubleheader 10-7.

In the opener, Carleton's four-run sixth inning wasn't enough as Augsburg (7-13, 1-1 MIAC) prevailed, 10-7. Sam Borman (Sr., Altoona, Wis.) threw a complete game, giving up six earned runs and striking out five. Augsburg's Jeremy Nelson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) got the win, improving to 4-1 on the year. Despite allowing 10 hits and recording no strikeouts, Nelson pitched effectively for six innings, as Carleton stranded four runners and grounded into two double plays.

Rathmann opened the Auggie barrage in the first inning, when he doubled home Collin Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS). Rathmann came home on a single from Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Jon Kozitza (So., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) singled home Rathmann in the third to give the Auggies a 3-1 lead.

Augsburg scored three runs in the fourth, sending seven batters to the plate. Rathmann doubled to bring home Nash, then came across on a throwing error. Krautkremer doubled home Marsh with the other run of the inning.

Two more runs came across in the fifth, when Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) plated Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) on a single, and later scored after stealing third and being able to scamper home on an error. Krautkremer's two-run homer to right field ended the Auggie scoring in the sixth.

For Carleton, LePage was 4-for-4 with three RBI, a double, triple and two runs scored. Udesth and Will Nissin (Fr., Edina, Minn.) also collected two hits each.

In the second game, LePage scattered five hits in posting his second consecutive complete-game victory, upping his record to 2-3. He allowed only one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out four. Rathmann took the loss on the mound, striking out four.

Udesth and LePage again provided the offense for Carleton (3-11, 1-1 MIAC). With the bases loaded and one down, Udseth rapped a base hit down the left-field line, bringing in two runs. LePage followed that with another two-run single. After LePage stole second, Bryan Nelson (Sr., Webster, S.D.) belted a double to right to bring him home and complete the five-run inning.

Seven of the nine Carleton starters recorded a hit, with Udseth going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Noah Brenner (Jr., Menomonie, Wis.) was 1-for-2 with a double, a RBI and run scored.

Augsburg was limited to just five hits, two from Krautkremer. The Auggies scored in the third, when Krautkremer singled in Frank Huebner (Sr., Northfield, Minn.). Krautkremer collected the Auggies' other RBI in the sixth, when he drove in Rathmann on a groundout.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday (4/9) with MIAC doubleheaders at 2:30 p.m. Augsburg "hosts" Macalester in a game that will be played at Macalester's artificial-turf field, because of field conditions at Midway Stadium. Carleton plays at defending Division III national champion St. Thomas.
