ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/9/02) -- Macalester College took advantage of seven Augsburg College errors while not committing any itself and went on to gain its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball win of the season, a 7-1 decision over the Auggies in St. Paul. The Scots completed the sweep with a 7-0 shutout, with a complete-game pitching performance from Steve Derrington (So., Amery, Wis.).

The games were Augsburg's home game but moved to Mac because Parade Stadium in Minneapolis is not yet ready for play. Macalester improved to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play, while Augsburg dropped to 7-15 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, dropping its third game in a row.

Scott Bell (Jr., Selah, Wash.) picked up his second win of the young season in the first game, scattering seven hits while walking just one and getting the complete game victory. Augsburg's Joe Pontrelli (So., Eagan, Minn.), making his second start of the season, allowed seven hits, but just one of the seven runs scored against him were earned in his 6.2 innings of work.

Leadoff batter Damon Dahlheimer (Sr., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) had two hits and two runs, while Ty O'Connell (Sr., Helena, Mont./Capital HS) drove in two runs. Joel Brettingen (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) had a run and an RBI, but had his hitting streak snapped at 17 games.

Augsburg's lone run came in the sixth, when Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) singled to drive in Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.). Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) led the Auggies with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

Augsburg was limited to just three hits off of Derrington in the second game, all singles. Augsburg had just four baserunners in the game, and all were stranded. Derrington struck out four Auggies and forced 10 groundouts in the game.

Dahlmeier led the Scots with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including a double, scoring twice and driving in a run. Bell went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the game. O'Connell and Mike Merrill (Fr., Lititz, Pa.) went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Jared Lynch (Sr., Jordan, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies, striking out three in five innings of work. Collin Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Travis Akre Jr., Winona, Minn.) pitched in relief.

Both teams return to action on Saturday (4/13) with MIAC doubleheaders at 1 p.m. Augsburg plays at Bethel, and Macalester plays at St. Olaf. Augsburg's rescheduled doubleheader against St. Thomas, originally rescheduled for Wednesday (4/10), has been pushed back to Sunday (4/14) at 1 p.m. at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.
