St. Olaf sends Augsburg to defeat on the road, 23-21

Football 9/21/02 -- St. Olaf 23, Augsburg 21

BOXSCORE

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/21/02) -- Brian Senske (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) threw for 271 yards and the eventual deciding touchdown late in the game, giving St. Olaf College a 23-21 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Manitou Field in the newly-dedicated Ade Christensen Athletic Complex.

St. Olaf remained unbeaten at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in MIAC play, but had to hold off an Augsburg club that rallied from a 10-0 deficit to take a 14-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. Augsburg is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg outgained St. Olaf by a 468-429 margin in the game.

The Oles won despite a single-game record effort by Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who became the first Auggie ever to throw for more than 400 yards in a single game. He set two single-game school records, completing 34 of 53 passes for 405 yards and two touchdowns. His 405 yards broke the old single-game record of 398, set by current assistant coach Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against Concordia-Moorhead. Fransen's 34 completions broke Lamker's school record of 31, set in a 1997 game against Hamline.

Trailing 14-10, St. Olaf scored twice and dominated the fourth quarter, holding the ball for nine minutes, 15 seconds compared to 5:45 for Augsburg. An eight-play, 71-yard drive was capped by a one-yard scoring rush by Cordell Hunkins (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) to give the Oles the lead to stay at 17-14.

Augsburg got the ball and advanced it to the St. Olaf 31-yard line, but Matt Dean (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) intercepted a pass with 11:16 left in the fourth quarter.

Starting at their own 5-yard line after a penalty on the interception, St. Olaf marched the ball 95 yards on 16 plays, consuming 5:35 off the clock before Senske threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Fritze (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) to give the Oles a 23-14 lead, after the kick conversion attempt failed.

Fransen was intercepted again on Augsburg's subsequent drive, by David Chapman (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), but the Auggies got the ball back three plays later, when Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) picked off a Senske pass and gave the Auggies the ball at their own 24-yard line with 4:12 remaining.

Augsburg moved the ball quickly with a 10-play, 76-yard drive, scoring on a Fransen 10-yard pass to T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) with 1:36 left. Though the subsequent onside kick attempt failed, Augsburg did get the ball back after St. Olaf was forced to punt with six seconds left. A desperation pass and lateral attempt in the closing seconds ended at the St. Olaf 45-yard line, and the Oles claimed the victory.

Augsburg was competitive with St. Olaf throughout the game, but penalties hurt the Auggies early. Augsburg was whistled for nine penalties for 89 yards, as three key penalties killed Auggie drives in the first quarter. Meanwhile, a bit of St. Olaf trickery gave the Oles the first TD, as receiver Nate Lund (Jr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato Loyola HS) threw a 63-yard end-around option pass for a touchdown to Cory Paterson (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.). A 38-yard field goal by Sean Koomen (Jr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) gave the Oles a 10-0 halftime advantage.

Augsburg rallied in the third quarter, scoring twice. Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a 23-yard pass reception from Fransen at the 11:01 mark of the third quarter, and three drives later, Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored on a five-yard run to give the Auggies their only lead of the game with 56 seconds left in the period.

Shannon had his second straight 100-yard receiving performance, catching seven balls for 107 yards. Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) also had a career-best afternoon, catching eight balls for 110 yards, and Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) caught 11 passes for 86 yards. Bramwell had a 111-yard afternoon, catching six balls for 99 yards and rushing eight times for 12 yards. Paul rushed 14 times for 52 yards.

Hunkins rushed for 81 yards on 24 carries to lead St. Olaf, while Paterson caught six passes for 110 yards. Lund caught four passes for 57 yards.

Defensively, Chad Thomas (Sr., Menomonie, Wis.) led the Oles with 8.5 tackles (seven solo). Chapman had 7.0 tackles (six solo), and Dean had 6.0 tackles (five solo).

Augsburg's defense was led by Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.), who had 8.5 tackles (seven solo). Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn./Kelley HS) had 7.0 tackles (six solo), including a sack. Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Chike Ochiagha (So., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) also had quarterback sacks.

Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (9/28) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts Gustavus in the annual Homecoming game at Edor Nelson Field, while St. Olaf plays at St. John's.Football 9/21/02 -- Augsburg at St. Olaf Game Notes

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (1-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) play at the St. Olaf College Oles (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m., at Manitou Field (capacity 3,500) in Northfield, Minn.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 12th season and currently has a 54-59 career mark. St. Olaf coach Chris Meidt (Bethel '92) is in his first season and is 2-0 overall.

RADIO: This week's Augsburg game will not be broadcast on KCCO-AM 950, because of the station's prior contracted commitment to other sports. With a change in start time for a Minnesota Twins broadcast on Saturday and a Minnesota Gopher football game already on WCCO, the Twins game will be broadcast on KCCO. The remaining seven Augsburg football games will be broadcast on KCCO with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. Because of broadcast restrictions, Auggie football games will not able to be cybercast on the Internet this season.

St. Olaf games are broadcast on KDHL-AM 920 in Fairbault, Minn., with Mike Morrisey and Gordy Kosfeld on the call.

SERIES: This is the 45th game in the all-time series between Augsburg and St. Olaf, a series the Oles lead 32-12. St. Olaf was the opponent for Augsburg's first-ever football game in 1926, a game the Oles won 26-0. Augsburg and St. Olaf played each season from 1926 to 1934, from 1941 and 1942 and from 1946 to 1950, nd every year since St. Olaf rejoined the MIAC in 1974. Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 7-4 against St. Olaf, and Augsburg has won four of the last five games in the series.

LAST YEAR: Ben Paul rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and Augsburg scored its first shutout victory in three seasons, avenging a 28-6 loss the year before with a 20-0 win over St. Olaf on Sept. 29, 2001 at Edor Nelson Field. Paul scored a 12-yard touchdown just before halftime, then weaved his way through the St. Olaf defense for a 47-yard score early in the third quarter, as the Auggies rushed for 223 yards in the game. Paul had 131 yards on 18 carries, while T.J. Bramwell rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries, including a five-yard touchdown midway through the third period.

Augsburg took advantage of six St. Olaf turnovers -- four fumbles and two interceptions -- and dominated virtually every offensive category. Augsburg held the ball for 36 minutes, 27 seconds compared to St. Olaf's 22:37. Augsburg had 22 first downs to St. Olaf's 11, and the Auggies had 90 plays to St. Olaf's 68. St. Olaf could only convert three of 17 third-down attempts and one of three fourth-down attempts, compared to Augsburg's nine-of-21 third-down conversions and one-of-four fourth-down conversions. In all, Augsburg outgained St. Olaf by a 378-193 margin.

Augsburg defenders sacked St. Olaf quarterback Brian Senske five times and limited the Ole offense to just 151 yards of passing and 42 rushing yards in the game. Manuel Spreigl, who had 199 yards and three touchdowns in the 2000 win over Augsburg, was limited to just 31 rushing yards on 14 carries in the 2001 game. St. Olaf entered Augsburg territory on just eight of its 18 drives, but could only penetrate the "red zone" -- inside the Augsburg 20 -- just twice, turning the ball over on downs both times, once in the second quarter at the Augsburg 14 and the other in the third quarter on the Augsburg 21. St. Olaf also turned the ball over on downs in the closing minutes at the Augsburg 42.

Kyle Koch had two sacks and 3.5 sackles (one solo). Scott Archambault led the Auggies with eight tackles (three solo) and a sack. Adam Leiter had six tackles (two solo), and Luke Wittrock had 5.5 tackles (two solo) and an interception. Mitch Theisen also had 5.5 tackles (three solo), including a tackle for loss.

Sammy Gross led the Auggies with 59 receiving yards on five catches, while Mark Johnson had 52 receiving yards on five catches. Dave Fransen completed 19 of 39 passes for 155 yards and just one interception. Senske completed 17 of 41 passes for 151 yards for the Oles. Dan Meyers had 10 tackles (six solo), including two tackles for loss for St. Olaf, while Shane Vatland also had 10 tackles (seven solo). Matt Lafferty notched eight tackles (one solo).

AUGSBURG LAST WEEK: Jeremy Darnell threw for 266 yards and one touchdown, leading the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to a 37-13 victory over host Augsburg in a nonconference football game last Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field. The Blugolds compiled 471 yards of total offense, including 192 yards rushing. Five different Blugolds scored touchdowns, as the Blugolds put together 86 offensive plays, compared to 57 for 312 yards for Augsburg. Eau Claire also took advantage of three Augsburg turnovers. Eau Claire led 24-0 at halftime, taking advantage of several big plays to score on four of its eight first-half possessions. Eleven different Blugolds rushed the football and 10 different Blugolds caught passes,

Augsburg scored both its touchdowns on long scoring plays from quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) to Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), a 61-yard completion in the third quarter and an 81-yard romp midway through the fourth. Fransen threw for 268 yards, the bulk coming on the two long touchdown passes to Shannon, who had 142 yards. T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) caught nine passes for 45 yards.

Eau Claire's defense limited Augsburg to just 44 net rushing yards, 22 by Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS). Augsburg's defense was paced by Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.), who had 10 tackles (seven solo), and Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.), who had eight tackles (six solo) and one sack.

ST. OLAF LAST WEEK: St. Olaf amassed 440 yards of total offense in a 49-0 trouncing at Carleton last Saturday. The victory was the sixth straight for St. Olaf over Carleton in the annual "Goat Trophy" game between the two Northfield schools. St. Olaf now leads the all-time series 40-39-1. The Oles jumped to a 21-0 first quarter lead on the heels of two Brian Senske (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) touchdown passes. Senske finished 15-of-26 for 222 yards.

The Ole defense held the Knights to just 103 total yards, while forcing four turnovers. Carleton had a net of minus-38 yards on the ground. Dave Busselman (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) had five tackles and two first-quarter sacks in the win, and Matt Dean (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) scored on a 71-yard interception return in the second quarter.

Jason Moore (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Brooklyn Center HS) led the Ole running attack with 94 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns. Moore's 41-yard score was the longest offensive play from scrimmage. Cordell Hunkins (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) had the Oles' first two tallies, a 20 yard pass from Senske and a seven-yard run on St. Olaf's second drive. Hunkins finished with 99 yards of total offense, carrying nine times for 34 yards and catching a team-high five passes for 65 yards. Frank Bass (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) caught Senske's other TD pass, a 31-yard strike with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Bass has three scores this season.

ON THE INJURY FRONT: Augsburg defensive tackle Kyle Koch (Sr., Austin, Minn.) suffered a shoulder injury during the Dakota State game and missed the Wisconsin-Eau Claire contest. He is expected to return this week. Wide receiver Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) is questionable for this week's game with a slight injury to his flexor muscle.

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Augsburg punter Nick Schlieman (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) has made an immediate impact for the Auggies, averaging 39.3 yards per punt this season. His average ranks 36th in the nation among NCAA Division III punters. Schlieman had 11 punts (two off the single-game school record of 13) last week against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, including three 50-yard-plus boots. His top punt was a 53-yarder. Of his 16 punts this season, nine have been 39 yards or more.

Defensive tackle Kyle Koch (Sr., Austin, Minn.) is tied for fourth nationally with an average of 1.0 fumbles forced per game. He forced one fumble in the win over Dakota State and missed last week's game with an injury. As a team, Augsburg is ranked 19th nationally in turnover ratio (plus-2.0 per game, eight turnovers gained to four lost).

St. Olaf is ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense (53.0 points per game), 13th in scoring defense (7.0 points per game), eighth in turnover radio (plus-3.5 per game), 37th nationally in total offense per-game average (439.0) and 20th in total defense per-game average (194.0), including ranking third nationally in rushing defense (minus-12 yards this season, minus-6 yards per game).

Brian Senske (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) is rated ninth nationally in pass efficiency (208.3 rating), Matt Johnson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) leads the nation in kickoff return average (44.3 yards) and is ranked 27th in all-purpose yards per game (184.0), Matt Dean (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) is ranked 25th in punt return average (16.1).

OSBERG CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL WINS RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. In his 12th season with the Auggies, he now has a 54-59 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just two behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 56 victories (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (43-55-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).

AUGSBURG IN NORTHFIELD: This is the first time since the 1998 season that Augsburg will play both Northfield schools -- St. Olaf and Carleton -- in Northfield, playing at St. Olaf this Saturday and at Carleton on Oct. 5. Playing both Northfield schools in Northfield has happened just five times previously -- 1978, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 1998, the Auggies made history by winning both games in Northfield and breaking long road losing streaks in the process, 70 years at St. Olaf and 20 years at Carleton. In the all-time series between Augsburg and St. Olaf, Augsburg has won just twice at Manitou Field -- 13-0 in 1928 and 31-24 in 1998. At Carleton's Laird Stadium, Augsburg has won just three times -- 28-7 in 1978, 31-28 in 1998 and 52-21 in 2001. All-time in Northfield, Augsburg is 5-24 -- 2-17 at St. Olaf and 3-7 at Carleton.

THE "MUDDLE HUDDLE": Augsburg assistant coach Ron Scott, who helps run the special teams, calls it the "Muddle Huddle." It's also been referred to as the "Daffy Duck" formation by other teams. It's the creative formation for extra-point conversion attempts that befuddled Dakota State in the season-opener. Lining up most of the squad -- the linemen and wings -- to the sideline, with just the snapper, quarterback Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and running back/receiver Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) in the center of the field, the Auggies claimed three 2-point conversion passes, while kicker Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) went 2-for-3 when the "Muddle Huddle" shifted to the more conventional PAT kick attempt. Last week against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Auggies shifted to the traditional kick formation on each of its two scores. The first PAT attempt was a high snap, which forced a run attempt, and the other kick was good. In going 3-for-4 on 2-point conversions, the Auggies have already eclipsed their total for all of last year on conversions (1-of-1) and the total is already the most successful season for 2-point conversions for Augsburg since 1988 (5-for-9).

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Last year, Augsburg suffered from a "good week, bad week" malady -- playing solid football one week and struggling the next. And in the end, the Auggies hovered where you would expect a team suffering that malady to finish -- 4-6.

This season has started with the same malady, as the Auggies followed an impressive 44-14 win over Dakota State (S.D.) with a struggle in a 37-13 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire. As the MIAC season begins, Augsburg hopes to break the string on the road with a good performance against a St. Olaf team that Augsburg surprised last season 20-0 at home.

Much of the burden offensively will fall on the shoulders of quarterback Dave Frasen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who has averaged 207.5 yards passing per game. So far, the Auggie signal-caller has been protected very well by an experienced offensive line, as Augsburg has surrendered just two sacks so far. And Fransen has thrown just two interceptions while completing 50 percent of his passes -- a level of consistency that needs to be maintained, and possibly improved, in order for Augsburg to be competitive against the tough teams in the MIAC. His "big-play" receivers -- Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.), Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) -- will need continue improving upon their 13.7 yards-per-catch average.

Last week, Wisconsin-Eau Claire shut down Augsburg's rushing offense -- a squad that gained 214 yards against Dakota State -- with just 44 net rushing yards. Last year, the Auggies put together a season-high 223-yard rushing effort against St. Olaf, and the primary running duo of Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) and T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) will need to be effective again. Paul is averaging 51.5 rushing yards per game, while Bramwell is averaging 47.0 yards per game.

Defensively, Augsburg has been solid, even while giving up 471 yards to one of the top teams in the region in Wisconsin-Eau Claire last week. The Blugolds were a quick-strike offense that has outscored its two opponents -- St. John's and Augsburg -- 45-0 in the first half this season, and big plays were the hallmark of their first-half efforts. Augsburg will have to stop the "big plays" on defense and remain opportunistic.

Augsburg's defense has recorded four sacks, five quarterback hurries and picked off four passes this season, an impressive performance considering that just three defensive starters returned from last year's lineup. Defensive back Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) leads the team with 15.0 tackles (10 solo), while lineman Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) has 11.5 tackles (nine solo) and 2.5 sacks.

Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) has scored on a 60-yard interception return this season and has 8.5 tackles (six solo) this season). Linebackers Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) are also in the top five defensively, with eight and seven tackles respectively.

SCOUTING THE OLES: The St. Olaf football program underwent a sea change during the off-season, when Chris Meidt was hired as the Oles' head coach, replacing five-year veteran Paul Miller, who left St. Olaf to return to high school coaching at South St. Paul (Minn.). Meidt, who was an offensive coordinator for Bethel clubs that won back-to-back MIAC championships, has brought his high-power offense down I-35 to Northfield, where the Oles have scored 106 points in their first two games -- a 57-14 win at Carroll (Wis.) on Sept. 7 and a 49-0 win at Carleton last Saturday.

The Oles have averaged 439.0 yards per game of total offense, including 248 yards of passing per contest. Starter Brian Senske (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) has thrown six touchdowns this season, three to Frank Bass (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS), who is averaging 100.5 receiving yards per game. Jason Moore (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Brooklyn Center HS) is averaging 55.0 rushing yards per game, scoring four touchdowns. He is one of five Oles to average more than 20 yards rushing per game. All five offensive line starters were lost to graduation last year, but three sophomores, a junior and freshman have filled the bill well in the Oles' first two games.

On defense, St. Olaf has forced five fumbles and picked off three passes, along the way allowing just 194.0 yards of total offense by their first two opponents. The defense has four quarterback sacks this year, two by defensive tackle Dave Busselman (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.). Seventeen Oles have 3.0 or more tackles this season. Defensive back Chad Thomas (Sr., Menomonie, Wis.) leads the Oles with 15.0 tackles (11 solo), while linebacker Owen Buckmaster (Sr., Lansing, Iowa) has 9.0 tackles (nine solo). Matt Dean (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) has 7.5 tadkles (seven solo) and returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown in last week's win at Carleton.

NEXT WEEK: Both teams are in action next Saturday (9/28) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts Gustavus in the Auggies' Homecoming game, while St. Olaf plays at St. John's in Collegeville, Minn.
