Football 9/28/02 -- Gustavus Adolphus 41, Augsburg 14

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/28/02) -- Andy Traetow (Sr., Jackson, Minn.) rushed for 192 yards, and Ryan Hoag (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) caught five passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns, leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a 41-14 rout of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Quarterback Sean Smith (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) threw for 238 yards and four scores, going 16-for-19 for the Gusties, now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAC play.

Falling in its Homecoming game, Augsburg drops to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in MIAC play with the loss, dropping its third game in a row. Gustavus has dominated the all-time series with Augsburg in recent years, winning its fifth game in a row over Augsburg and improving to 48-12 in the all-time series with the Auggies.

Smith completed his final 12 passes in a row, not missing a pass after the first quarter. He directed a Gustie offense that put together 472 yards (234 rush, 238 pass) of total offense, compared to just 276 yards (182 passing, 94 rushing) for Augsburg.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Gusties exploded on offense, scoring touchdowns on six of seven drives the rest of the way. The Gusties accomplished this feat by pulling some trickery, including converting first downs on two fake punts.

The first fake punt, a direct snap to the up-man Traetow, was converted into a 33-yard gain on fourth down and 2 at the Gustavus 39. Three plays later, Smith put the Gusties on the board, with a 23-yard scoring pass to Hoag.

Augsburg turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, and Gustavus converted again, taking advantage of a third-down, roughing-the-passer penalty againt Augsburg. Four plays later, Smith found the end zone himself, rushing one yard for a score.

Limited to 11 yards rushing in the first half, Augsburg opened the second half with a 15-play, 52-yard drive -- 51 yards on the ground -- capped by a one-yard touchdown by Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) midway through the third quarter.

But the Gusties scored twice in the final four minutes of the third period to put the game out of reach. A 35-yard pass from Smith to Hoag gave the Gusties good field position, and four plays laser, Smith found Hoag with a five-yard scoring strike with 4:42 remaining. On Gustavus' next drive, they used another fake punt rush by Traetow to set up another Smith-to-Hoag score, this one a 32-yard scoring strike with seven seconds left in the frame.

On Gustavus' first drive of the fourth quarter, a 38-yard rush by Traetow set up the Gusties' next score, a 20-yard pass from Smith to Adam Britz (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.). Augsburg scored on its next drive, as Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). But the Gusties closed the game with another score, as another long run by Traetow, a 42-yard gain, set up a Jeff Pelant (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) five-yard score with 5:41 left in the game.

Eight different Gusties caught passes, and six different Gusties rushed the ball. Pelant caught three passes for 28 yards, and Traetow caught three balls for 25 yards.

Augsburg's Fransen completed 12-for-17 passes for 154 yards, including six passes for 86 yards to Slowon. Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) caught two passes for 62 yards. T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) rushed 16 timnes for 52 yards, while Paul rushed 13 times for 48 yards.

Defensively, Ben Spilseth (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) had 8.5 tackles (two solo), and Dirk Erickson (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) had 8.5 tackles (three solo) and a sack. Tyler Vrieze (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) had 4.0 tackles (one solo) and a sack. Matt Diercks (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had a late-game interception for the Gusties.

Augsburg's defense was led by Jordan Hastings (Fr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who had 5.0 tackles (three solo) and an interception. John Golintz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 4.5 tackles (one solo), as did Luke Carlson (Jr., Darwin, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) with two solo markers. On special teams, Hoag also had a blocked punt in the first quarter.

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (10/5) with a 1 p.m. game at Carleton in Northfield, Minn. Gustavus hosts St. John's on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 12th season and currently has a 54-60 career mark. Gustavus coach Jay Schoenebeck (Gustavus '81) is in his ninth season and is 44-39 overall.

Because of broadcast restrictions, Auggie football games will not able to be cybercast on the Internet this season. Gustavus games are broadcast on KRBI-AM 1310 in St. Peter, Minn., with Clay Kepner on play-by-play and Ken Ericson on analysis.

SERIES: This is the 60th game in the all-time series between Augsburg and Gustavus Adolphus, a series the Gusties lead 47-12. Gustavus has won the last four games in a row in the series, and Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 3-7 in his career against Gustavus. The teams began the series in Augsburg's first year of football, 1926, and have played every year, with the exception of the 1991 season (game cancelled due to a blizzard), since 1956. Augsburg's last win in the series was a 41-35, two-overtime victory at St. Peter on Oct. 18, 1997. Augsburg's last home win over Gustavus was a 25-13 win on Sept. 25, 1993.

LAST YEAR: Gustavus jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and went on to claim a 31-13 win over Augsburg at Gustavus' Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter on Oct. 20, 2001. Quarterback Joe Thorvig completed 22-of-37 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gustie offense, while the Gustavus defense forced four turnovers and limited the Auggies to 254 yards of total offense and 13 points.

The Gusties scored on all three of their possessions in the first quarter on their way to a 17-0 lead. Gustavus opened the scoring on its first drive when Curt Baldus hit a 35-yard field goal with 8:30 remaining. Augsburg turned the ball over two plays later, when Gustavus linebacker Dirk Erickson forced a fumble that Zach Zimmer recovered at the Augsburg 31-yard line. Gustavus extended its lead to 10-0 when Thorvig found Brett Boese in the end zone from 17 yards out, two plays later with 7:48 remaining. With 1:06 remaining in the first quarter, Thorvig hit Ryan Hoag with a 20-yard touchdown strike and the Gusties led 17-0. Late in the second quarter, Augsburg defensive back Brett Peroutka intercepted a Thorvig pass and returned it 21 yards to the Gustavus seven-yard line. The Auggies got on the board two plays later when quarterback Dave Fransen found wide receiver Mark Johnson in the end zone from seven-yards out. Tim Mauseth added the extra point, which cut the Gustavus lead to 17-7. Dave Sherry blocked a Gustie field-goal attempt just before halftime.

Gustavus opened the second half the way it opened the game, with an impressive nine-play, 56-yard drive that ended with Adam Britz busting loose on a 21-yard touchdown run on a 4th-and-1 play. Baldus converted the extra point to make the score 24-7. Augsburg took the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards in nine plays with Jamie Smith scoring on a 17-yard pass from Fransen. The extra point was no good, which cut the Gustavus lead to 24-13. With the Gustavus offense struggling in the fourth quarter, Augsburg had multiple opportunities to get back into the game, however the Auggie offense turned the ball over three times in the final eight minutes of the game. The final turnover resulted in a Gustavus touchdown as strong safety Brad Arndt grabbed a Fransen aerial and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. Baldus added the extra point, which made the final score 31-13 in favor of Gustavus.

Gustavus compiled 324 yards of total offense in the contest, including 111 yards rushing and 213 passing. Jeff Pelant was the Gusties' leading rusher with 10 carries for 54 yards and Hoag was the Gusties' leading receiver with six catches for 74 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Gustavus was led by linebacker Erickson, who totalled 13 tackles (nine solo) and forced two fumbles. Linebacker Brian Bergstrom also compiled 13 tackles, while Zach Zimmer contributed nine tackles and recovered two fumbles. Augsburg was led offensively by quarterback Fransen, who completed 22-of-37 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Ben Paul was the leading rusher with 15 carries for 61 yards, while Johnson was the leading receiver, with nine catches for 77 yards and one
touchdown. Defensively, Augsburg was led by defensive back Larry Lyden with 12 tackles (eight solo). Defensive lineman Joe Cullen recorded seven tackles, including two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

AUGSBURG LAST WEEK: The Auggies played a tough contest last Saturday in falling 23-21 at St. Olaf. The Oles won despite a single-game record effort by Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.), who became the first Auggie ever to throw for more than 400 yards in a single game. He set two single-game school records, completing 34 of 53 passes for 405 yards and two touchdowns. His 405 yards broke the old single-game record of 398, set by current assistant coach Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against Concordia-Moorhead. Fransen's 34 completions broke Lamker's school record of 31, set in a 1997 game against Hamline. Fransen earned MIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors for his game against the Oles.

Trailing 14-10, St. Olaf scored twice and dominated the fourth quarter, holding the ball for nine minutes, 15 seconds compared to 5:45 for Augsburg and scoring two touchdowns to take a 23-14 lead. But after Andy Matzke's (So., Faribault, Minn.) second interception of the game with 4:12 remaining, Augsburg moved the ball quickly with a 10-play, 76-yard drive, scoring on a Fransen 10-yard pass to T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) with 1:36 left. Though the subsequent onside kick attempt failed, Augsburg did get the ball back after St. Olaf was forced to punt with six seconds left. A desperation pass and lateral attempt in the closing seconds ended at the St. Olaf 45-yard line, and the Oles claimed the victory.

Augsburg was competitive with St. Olaf throughout the game, but penalties hurt the Auggies early. Augsburg was whistled for nine penalties for 89 yards, as three key penalties killed Auggie drives in the first quarter. Augsburg rallied in the third quarter, scoring twice. Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a 23-yard pass reception from Fransen at the 11:01 mark of the third quarter, and three drives later, Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored on a five-yard run to give the Auggies their only lead of the game with 56 seconds left in the period.

Shannon had his second straight 100-yard receiving performance, catching seven balls for 107 yards. Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) also had a career-best afternoon, catching eight balls for 110 yards, and Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) caught 11 passes for 86 yards. Bramwell had a 111-yard afternoon, catching six balls for 99 yards and rushing eight times for 12 yards. Paul rushed 14 times for 52 yards.

Augsburg's defense was led by Brandon Fox (Jr., Springfield, Minn.), who had 8.5 tackles (seven solo). Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn./Kelley HS) had 7.0 tackles (six solo), including a sack. Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Chike Ochiagha (So., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) also had quarterback sacks.

GUSTAVUS LAST WEEK: Gustavus dominated winless Carleton in a 48-14 decision on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. Running back Andy Traetow (Sr., Jackson, Minn.) rushed for 210 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns in the contest to earn MIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors (with Augsburg's Dave Fransen). Traetow got the Gusties off to a fast start as he broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game to give Gustavus a 6-0 lead. His other touchdown run was a two-yard scamper late in the third quarter. It was the second time in his career that he has rushed for over 200 yards in a game. He has now rushed for 399 yards on 55 carries through three games this season.

Quarterback Sean Smith (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) threw for three touchdowns and 193 yards, while receiver Brett Boese (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) caught seven passes for 107 yards and two scores, as Gustavus outgained Carleton 470-219.

MIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK DAVE FRANSEN: Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, sharing the honor with Gustavus running back Andy Traetow. Fransen became the first Auggie ever to throw for more than 400 yards in a single game and set two single-game school records in Augsburg's 23-21 loss at St. Olaf on Saturday. Against the Oles, he completed 34 of 53 passes for 405 yards and two touchdowns. His 405 yards broke the old single-game record of 398, set by current assistant coach Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against Concordia-Moorhead. Fransen's 34 completions broke Lamker's school record of 31, set in a 1997 game against Hamline. Augsburg rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to take a 14-10 lead into the fourth quarter against the Oles. Fransen threw a 23-yard TD strike in the third quarter and another one in the closing minutes, as the Auggies attempted to rally back for the win.

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: With his game against St. Olaf, Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) moved into the NCAA Division III national rankings in two categories. In total offense, he is ranked 32nd nationally with a 267.0 yards-per-game average. Fransen's 34 completions against St. Olaf is the fourth-most in a single game in Division III this season; Scott Kello of Sul Ross State (La.) completed 44 passes in a game against Louisiana College on Saturday to lead the nation.

Defensive back Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) is ranked 32nd nationally in passes defensed per game, with four interceptions and three pass break-ups.

Gustavus running back Andy Traetow (Sr., Jackson, Minn.) is ranked 19th nationally in rushing yardage per game (133.0) and 22nd in all-purpose yardage per game (183.0), while quarterback Sean Smith (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) is ranked 21st in passing efficiency (161.3 rating).

As a team, Augsburg is ranked 33rd nationally in passing offense per game (280.7) and 35th in turnover ratio (plus-1.3 per game, 10 turnovers gained to six lost). Gustavus is ranked 35th nationally in scoring defense per game (13.3 points).

OSBERG CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL WINS RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. In his 12th season with the Auggies, he now has a 54-60 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just two behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 56 victories (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (43-55-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).

THE "MUDDLE HUDDLE": Augsburg assistant coach Ron Scott, who helps run the special teams, calls it the "Muddle Huddle." It's also been referred to as the "Daffy Duck" formation by other teams. It's the creative formation for extra-point conversion attempts that befuddled Dakota State in the season-opener. Lining up most of the squad -- the linemen and wings -- to the sideline, with just the snapper, quarterback Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and running back/receiver Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) in the center of the field, the Auggies claimed three 2-point conversion passes, while kicker Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) went 2-for-3 when the "Muddle Huddle" shifted to the more conventional PAT kick attempt. Last week against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Auggies shifted to the traditional kick formation on each of its two scores. The first PAT attempt was a high snap, which forced a run attempt, and the other kick was good. In going 3-for-4 on 2-point conversions, the Auggies have already eclipsed their total for all of last year on conversions (1-of-1) and the total is already the most successful season for 2-point conversions for Augsburg since 1988 (5-for-9). Augsburg has not attempted a two-point conversion in the last two games, against Wisconsin-Eau Claire or St. Olaf.

AUGSBURG'S SUCCESS ON FAKE GRASS: With fellow MIAC school St. John's christening its new artificial-turf surface this season, Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field is one of two artificial-turf fields in the MIAC and one of only four among Minnesota colleges (the others are the University of Minnesota at the Metrodome and Minnesota-Duluth). At Edor Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 30-23 record in head coach Jack Osberg's tenure (since 1991). Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 33-50-1 at home. On artificial-turf fields (including games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and Fargo, N.D., Fargodome), Augsburg is 37-28 since 1991 and 40-59-1 since 1984.

HALL OF FAME: Every year during Homecoming weekend, Augsburg inducts new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame. On Thursday night, nine former Auggie student-athletes were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, and two Augsburg supporters received the school's Distinguished Athletic Service Award. Recipients are chosen each year on the basis of performance in Augsburg athletics, service to the school, civic and professional achievements and leadership.

Receiving the Distinguished Athletic Service Award were longtime athletic department secretary Irene Steenson and former athlete and athletic booster Merlin White '56. Steenson, who has worked at Augsburg since 1963, began her career as secretary for the public relations office, and later moved to Alumni and Parent Relations before joining the athletic department in the early 1980s. She officially retired in 1982, but has worked at least three days a week in the athletic department since then.

A two-way player in football in the mid-50s, White has been an active A-Club supporter, in particular on the golf tournament committee, which raised more than $100,000 for Augsburg athletics during his decade of service.

Honored in this year's class of inductees into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame are:

-- Lisa Svac Hawks '85 (volleyball, softball) -- A three-time All-MIAC pitching selection (1983, 1984, 1985) in softball, Svac earned AIAW all-state and all-region honors as a member of Auggie softball squads that won the Minnesota AIAW state title twice (1982, 1983) and MIAC championships three times (1982, 1983, 1984). In volleyball, Svac earned All-MIAC honors in 1984.
-- Scott Whirley '82 (wrestling) -- A three-time All-American in wrestling (1979, 1981, 1982), Whirley earned the NAIA national title at 126 pounds in 1979 and won MIAC titles in 1978, 1981 and 1982.
