Auggies blitz Dakota State (S.D.) 44-14 in opener

Football 9/7/02 -- Augsburg 44, Dakota State (S.D.) 14

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/7/02) -- T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) tied a single-game school record with three rushing touchdowns, leading Augsburg College to a season-opening 44-14 victory over Dakota State University (S.D.) in a nonconference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Bramwell rushed for 85 yards on 13 carries, helping Augsburg to its biggest opening-day win since a 45-13 triumph over Mayville State (N.D.) in 1998. It was the season-opener for both teams. Bramwell tied a single-game school record with his three rushing scores, tying a mark set by Marty Alger (vs. St. Olaf, 1993) and Mike Strandness (vs. Carleton, 1994).

Augsburg trailed 7-0 late in the first quarter, then scored 44 unanswered points, including three two-point conversions on touchdowns. Augsburg scored on five consecutive drives spanning the first and second quarters. The Auggies outgained the Trojans by a 383-192 yard margin, and Augsburg, normally a strong passing team, gained 214 yards on the ground.

Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS), who gained 81 yards on 11 carries, opened the scoring with a three-yard score in the final minute of play in the first quarter, completing a seven-play, 71-yard drive. Bramwell scored his first touchdown, a six-yarder, with 11:39 left in the second quarter, and one play after forcing a Dakota State fumble, Augsburg wide receiver Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) sprinted for a 28-yard score on an end-around reverse. Augsburg's next drive was capped by Bramwell's second score of the day, a seven-yard run.

Just before halftime, Augsburg scored an unlikely touchdown on a 60-yard interception return by Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.). It appeared that there was movement on the line from both teams on the play, but no penalty flag was thrown, and when Dakota State quarterback Tom Nielsen (So., Madison, S.D.) attempted a quick pass, it was intercepted by an open Matzke, who sprinted untouched to the end zone.

Augsburg completed its scoring early in the fourth quarter, when Bramwell scored his third touchdown of the day, on a three-yard run. Dakota State ended the scoring on the ensuing kickoff, when Fester Huot (Fr., Rosemead, Calif.) returned the kick 92 yards for a touchdown.

Justin Mayer (Sr., Stockton, Calif.) had Dakota State's other touchdown on the day, a five-yard pass from Nielsen with 6:12 left in the first quarter to cap a 14-play, 58-yard drive that took more than half the first quarter to complete.

Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Frmington, Minn.) completed 11 of 19 passes for 147 yards. Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), a transfer making his Auggie debut, caught four passes for 67 yards, and Shannon caught two passes for 31 yards. Reserve quarterback Tony George (Fr., Blaine, Minn.), the holder on Auggie extra-point attempts, threw three two-point conversions, all to Pat Lofboom (So., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS).

Dakota State was led by the rushing of Jesse Zwetzig (Sr., Hermosa, S.D.), who gained 99 yards on 25 carries. Tommy Hofer (Fr., Lennox, S.D.) caught six passes for 54 yards, and Nielsen completed 9 of 22 passes for 71 yards.

Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) led Augsburg's defense with 5.0 tackles (three solo), while Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 4.5 tackles (two solo). Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had 1.5 sacks.

Jesse Voss (Sr., Alcester, S.D.) had 7.5 tackles (six solo), while Bob Magna Jr. (Fr., Round Lake, Ill.) had 7.0 tackles (four solo) with a sack for Dakota State.

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (9/14), hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a 7 p.m., nonconference game at Edor Nelson Field. Dakota State plays at Valley City State (N.D.) next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Football 9/7/02 -- Dakota State at Augsburg Game Notes

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (0-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC; 4-6 in 2001) host the Dakota State University Trojans (0-0 overall, 0-0 DAC-10; 2-8 in 2001) in a nonconference football game on Saturday, September 7 at 1 p.m., at Edor Nelson Field (capacity 2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is entering his 12th season and currently has a 53-58 career mark. Dakota State head coach Gene Wockenfuss (Dakota State '83) is in his first season and is 0-0 overall.

RADIO: Augsburg football has a new home this season on the radio, on KCCO-AM 950 in the Twin Cities. Returning for their fifth season of broacasting Auggie football are Tom Witschen on play-by-play, with Russ Bohaty on analysis. Because of broadcast restrictions, Auggie football games will not able to be cybercast on the Internet this season. Dakota State broadcast will be aired on KJAM-FM 103.1 (Madison, S.D.) with Jim Hockett on the call.

SERIES: This is the first-ever meeting between Augsburg and Dakota State, an NAIA school in Madison, S.D.

OSBERG CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL WINS RECORD: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Osberg enters his 12th season with the Auggies with a 53-58 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just three behind the school's all-time wins record, Edor Nelson's 58 wins (58-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (43-55-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career winning percentage of .477 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (54th season, 50th at St. John's in 2002) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (14th season).

AUGSBURG AGAINST THE DAKOTAS: This is Augsburg's first-ever meeting with Dakota State, but it will be the seventh game against a South Dakota college and 12th against Dakota State's conference, the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10). Augsburg is 3-3 against South Dakota schools. Augsburg is 0-1 against Augustana (1964), 1-0 against Dakota Wesleyan (1981) and 2-2 against Huron College (1986, 1987, 1993, 1994). Against DAC-10 teams, Augsburg is 8-3 all-time. Augsburg is 2-2 against Huron, 4-0 against Mayville State (N.D., 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999) and 2-1 against Valley City State (N.D., 1974, 1975, 1997).

AUGSBURG'S SUCCESS ON FAKE GRASS: With fellow MIAC school St. John's christening its new artificial-turf surface this season, Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field is one of two artificial-turf fields in the MIAC and one of only four among Minnesota colleges (the others are the University of Minnesota at the Metrodome and Minnesota-Duluth). At Edor Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 29-22 record in head coach Jack Osberg's tenure (since 1991). Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 32-49-1 at home. On artificial-turf fields (including games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and Fargo, N.D., Fargodome), Augsburg is 36-27 since 1991 and 39-58-1 since 1984.

OSBERG IS 9-2 IN SEASON-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has led a resurrection of Augsburg football since being hired as head coach before the 1991 season. One of his strongest accomplishments has been his record in season-opening games. However, Osberg will have to try to start a new winning streak when he opens his 12th season this Saturday. Augsburg has lost its last two season-openers in a row, both to Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Osberg is 6-1 in season openers played at Augsburg; Osberg is 8-3 in Augsburg's first home game of his 11 previous seasons.

Jack Osberg's season-opening games:

FIRST SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE GAMES SINCE 1983: With Macalester dropping its MIAC affiliation for football for the next five seasons, Augsburg will be playing two nonconference games in its 10-game regular-season schedule. After Carleton joined the MIAC in 1983 to give the conference 10 football schools, Augsburg has played nine conference games every year since then, with the exception of 1991, when a game against Gustavus was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween blizzard. Augsburg's last regular-season schedule with two nonconference games was 1983, when Augsburg defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) 29-24 on Sept. 3 and lost to Bemidji State 23-7 at the Metrodome on Nov. 20. That season, Augsburg went 4-7, the only year that Augsburg has had an 11-game regular season. Augsburg played three nonconference games in its MIAC championship season of 1997 (10-2), with its regular season win at Valley City State (N.D., 24-20 on Sept. 6) and two games in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (34-22 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome on Nov. 15 and 61-21 loss at Simpson (Iowa) on Nov. 22.).

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Consistency will be the buzzword for the Augsburg College football team in 2002. After finishing with what head coach Jack Osberg termed a disappointing 4-6 last season, the Auggies return significant depth on offense and several key starters on defense, as the team looks to improve and gain more consistency.

"We were a little disappointed at how we finished last year," Osberg said. "That disappointment will carry over to a charge for this year. We're focused on improving and being more consistent. The coaches and the team are looking to redeem ourselves this year. We look to start strong and finish strong."

Osberg has changed the Augsburg coaching staff to provide a spark for the team this season. After spending seven seasons as defensive coordinator, Jim Roback will become the team's new offensive coordinator. Osberg will take over defensive coordinator responsibilities, and three former Auggie players -- Scott Hvistendahl, Matt Chappuis and Shane Gunderson -- will join the coaching staff, Hvistendahl coaching the running backs, Chappuis coaching the defensive line, and Gunderson coaching the linebackers. Sean Peterson also joins the Auggie coaching staff, working with linebackers and defensive backs.

The Auggies will be led on the field by captains T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.), Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) and Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS).

Nine starters, including all but one skill-position player and four of five offensive linemen, return to Augsburg's offense. Osberg promises that the offense will become a more versatile group, as Roback will return the Auggies to more of a multiple offense style. Last season, Augsburg's offense struggled with its consistency, turning the ball over 40 times (25 interceptions, 15 fumbles), compared to just 27 for its opponents (13-14). Augsburg managed more than 300 yards of total offense in just five games.

This year, with a full year of starting experience under his belt, quarterback Dave Fransen (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) will be counted on to lead the Auggies' offense. Fransen, one of three quarterbacks used by the Auggies in 2001, saw the bulk of snaps, throwing for 1,278 yards and 12 touchdowns (17 interceptions).

The running back tandem of Ben Paul (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Johnson HS) and T.J. Bramwell (Sr., Tomah, Wis.) became one of the top duos in the MIAC last year, as the two combined for nearly 1,000 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Paul, an honorable-mention All-MIAC selection last year, gained 586 yards and scored six touchdowns, while Bramwell gained 399 yards and had three scores, along with catching two more touchdowns out of the backfield.

Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) was a starting wide receiver last year, and will be counted on to make an impact for Augsburg's receiving game. He averaged over 12 yards per reception last year. In addition, Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) will return to the offensive side of the football, after playing last year on defense. Mathew Shannon (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), one of the top sprinters from Augsburg's track and field team, returns to the football team after taking last season off. Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) transfers to Augsburg from North Dakota State. Tony Warren (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.) averaged 9.5 yards a reception last year as Augsburg's starting tight end.

Four of the five offensive line starters return, and along with nine other returning letterwinners and several solid recruits, it makes the area one of the strongest for the Auggies this year. Jesse Naughton (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.) made a tremendous impact at left tackle, earning All-MIAC honorable mention honors in the key position on the blind side of the line. Bob Eckstrom (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) is one of the most versatile linemen in the program, having played nearly every position on the line at one time or another. Rich Nelson (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) made a strong impact at center and should start in the position this year. Lincoln Langhorst (Sr., Lafayette, Minn./Sibley East HS) and Brad Motl (Sr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) split time at right guard last year, and could fill both guard spots this year. Returning starter Nate Anderson (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and James Brue (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) saw extensive time on the line last year, and should also contend for starting spots on the line.

"Overall, we'll need to rebuild our defense," Osberg admitted. Eight starters were lost from last year's lineup, including all four secondary starters. However, there is some depth on the defensive line and in the linebacking corps, a group that allowed just 293.3 yards of total offense per game last season.

One of the key returners will be linebacker Mitch Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS), who led the Auggies in tackles last season (59.5, 41 solo) en route to earning All-MIAC second-team honors. Brandon Fox (Jr., Sanborn, Minn./Springfield HS) and Andy Stephenson (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) were key linebacker reserves last year and are expected to be ready to make key contributions to the team this year, along with Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), Tim Stowe (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), John Golnitz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) and Jake Schmiesing (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS).

Two huge holes will need to be filled on the defensive line, as Osberg will have to replace Matt Chappuis, who earned the Stam Award as the MIAC's outstanding lineman last year, and Dave Sherry, who fell a half-sack shy of tying the school's single-season record for sacks (14).

Two starters return on the defensive line -- Kyle Koch (Sr., Austin, Minn.) and Joe Cullen (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.). Both had quality years joining Chappuis and Sherry on the line, with Koch recording 27.5 tackles (14 solo), four sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, and Cullen notching 15.5 tackles (10 solo), with two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. Several players will likely battle for the other two defensive line spots, led by Derek Kuhlman (Sr., Rush City, Minn.), Sam Harmer (Jr., Silver Bay, Minn./Kelley HS), Chike Ochiagha (So., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Tom Stefanacci (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.).

The secondary will present the biggest challenge for the Auggies, after all four starters from last season graduated. Chad Scheitel (Sr., Worthington, Minn.) was a solid backup safety last year after battling injuries in his first Auggie season. Andy Matzke (So., Faribault, Minn.) saw action in all 10 games at cornerback, and Joe Holman (Sr., Springfield, Minn.), Jon Fahler (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) and Luke Carlson (Jr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) also return with secondary experience.

The kicking positions are wide open. Mike Pontius (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) is the lone returner at the placekicking spot, having kicked for the last two years on the junior varsity squad. Kim Jaktund (So., Stockholm, Sweden/Lotgymnasiet School) could contend for the kicking role. Punting will be another question mark. Nick Schlieman (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.), who was an excellent high school punter, will be the likely punter.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS: The Dakota State University football program has undergone several changes for the 2002 season as a new head football coach and a new philosophy greet the Trojans. Gene Wockenfuss, a 1983 DSU graduate has taken over as head coach. Wockenfuss believes in recruiting and playing athletes who have a genuine love for the game.

"The kind of player we want on the field is someone who has a passion for the game, can compete every play and not hang his helmet up until the final gun," Wockenfuss stated. "The win loss statistic is one in itself. We have to maintain good continuity, keep mistakes to a minimum and have limited injuries throughout the season."

The Trojans play in one of the toughest NAIA conferences in the DAC-10 and for the Trojans to compete they will have to play the way Wockenfuss has stated. Helping the Trojans do that will be a mixture of talented returning players and athletic recruits from both the junior college and high school ranks. The Trojans will go into each game with the idea to have a ball control offense and mistake free football. To do this the Trojans will place an emphasis on a short passing game.

"Our emphasis will be on establishing a run-game through an inside-outside zone and misdirection scheme," Wockenfuss stated. "Pass-wise we'll play off the run game and take advantage of getting the ball in our receiver's hands and let them make plays."

Every position the Trojans will suit up for this season has Wockenfuss concerned about depth. From running back to the defensive secondary, the Trojans will have to test inexperienced players to find the right fit.

Several key players come back for the Trojans this season. On the offensive side of the ball, senior wide receivers Tony Manning (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Jude Olivia (Sr., Rosemead, Calif.), and senior running back Jesse Zwetzig (Sr., Hermosa, S.D.) will provide the leadership Wockenfuss wants. Manning comes back after a season in which he caught 43 passes for 630 yards in his first season with the Trojans. Other receivers to watch for will be sophomore Tyler Vogt (So., Bonesteel, S.D.), who saw limited playing time last year as a freshman and newcomer Tommy Hofer (Fr., Lennox, S.D.), who transferred from South Dakota State University. Zwetzig returns as the leading rusher, amassing 1,001 yards (902 rush, 99 receiving) and a 4.08-yard per carry average last season.

Wockenfuss is bringing in an offense that will provide a good mixture of run and pass. The quarterback position should be one of the best positions for the Trojans. Sophomore returning quarterback, Tom Nielsen (So., Madison, S.D.) and freshman Ryan Kruse (Fr., Lennox, S.D.) are back for another campaign with junior college transfer Steve Jones (Fr., Manti, Utah) from Snow Junior College in Utah.

Anchoring the offensive line, Wockenfuss feels he has All-Conference caliber players in Brant Winter (Sr., Wessington, S.D.) and Brad Javers (Sr., Tea, S.D.). Both these players will provide leadership to an offensive line that has limited game time playing experience. Along with Zwetzig, Florida newcomers Terry Hurlburt (Fr., Zephurhills, Fla.) and Corey Pride (Fr., Lake Wells, Fla.) will add depth to the position.

At H-Back, Wockenfuss is anxious to see sophomore Nefu Mageo (So., Pago Pago, American Samoa), who saw limited playing time because of injury last season. Ryan Schmeichel (So., Odessa, Minn.) will also see playing time.

The Trojans put an emphasis on flying to the football when they are on defense. To do this they will play an aggressive eight-man front to force the opposing offense to make bad decisions. With this defense the Trojans could capitalize on turnover margins throughout the season and throughout each game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Trojans bring back three leaders, senior linebacker Jesse Voss (Sr., Alcester, S.D.) and sophomores Mike Sonne (So., Mt. Vernon, S.D., DL) and Paul Carrol (So., Waianae, Hawaii, cornerback). Voss led the Trojan defense with 75 tackles last season. As a freshman, Sonne led the Trojans with three sacks. Carrol, after missing an entire season with an ankle injury, came back last season to record 38 tackles and one interception.

The linebacking unit is rather untested behind Voss. Former running back Aaron Rodgers (So., Aurora, Colo.) moves over and has looked impressive in workouts. Others who look to contribute as linebackers for the Trojan defense are junior Jeremiah Schmeichel (Jr., Odessa, Minn.), sophomore Steve Settje (So., Scotland, S.D.) and freshman Aaron Goettig (Fr., Currie, Minn.).

Wockenfuss feels good about what he has on the defensive line. Along with Sonne, Wockenfuss feels that returning Trojans sophomore Blake Klinger (So., Mankato, Minn.) and freshman Nick Podhradsky (Fr., Woonsocket, S.D.) are all talented enough to start.

The Trojan secondary is a young but talented group according to Wockenfuss. Along with Carroll, freshmen Fester Huot (Fr., Rosemead, Calif.) and Brent McMillian (Fr., Garden City, S.D.), and sophomores Paul Matthews (So., Pipestone, Minn.) and Joe Hoffman (So., Parkston, S.D.) will each compete for starting time.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Eau Claire in its second nonconference game on Saturday (9/16) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Dakota State opens DAC-10 play at Valley City State (N.D.) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Valley City, N.D.
