Augsburg dominates, wins MIAC Team Duals for 13th straight year!

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (1/25/03) -- Winning 26 of 30 individual matches on the afternoon, Augsburg College claimed its 13th straight title at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Duals tournament, held Saturday at St. John's University.

Augsburg topped St. Olaf 45-6, winning eight of 10 matches. Augsburg won nine of 10 matches in its other two wins, a 50-3 triumph over Concordia-Moorhead and a 39-3 win over St. John's. St. John's went 2-1, topping Concordia 30-21 and St. Olaf 48-6. St. Olaf beat Concordia 28-22 in the other dual match.

Augsburg's Marcus LeVesseur (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) earned the meet's Rory Jordan Award, given the wrestler who earns the most pins in the shortest amount of time. LeVesseur, top-ranked at 157 pounds, scored two pionts in 2:39. His other victory was by a technical fall. LeVesseur is now 27-0 on the season.

In the 13-year history of the MIAC Team Duals, Augsburg has a perfect 65-0 record, winning all 13 tournaments and outscoring MIAC foes by a 3,119-136 margin. Augsburg has a 17-season, 85-match dual-meet winning streak against MIAC opponents, its last loss a 25-21 defeat to St. John's in 1986. Since 1975, Augsburg is 184-2 against MIAC opponents.

Ricky Crone * (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked second in Division III at 184, won both his matches by technical fall. Jamell Tidwell (So., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked fourth nationally at 141, received two forfeits and won his other match by a major decision.

Joe Moon * (So., Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS), ranked fifth in Division III at 174, had two falls and a major decision in going 3-0 in the event. Mike Flanagan (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), ranked fifth nationally at heavyweight, had a technical fall among his two wins.

Greg Brendemuehl (Fr., Medford, Minn.) had a pin and technical fall at 125 pounds, while Ryan Stroud (So., Park Falls, Wis.) had a fall and decision in going 2-0 at 149.

Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (1/28), with a 7:30 p.m. dual at Division II power North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D..
