MINNEAPOLIS (1/31/03) -- Josh Storm (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) scored two goals and goalie Tony Ciro (Fr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 36 saves in net, as the Bethel College men's hockey team recorded its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season, a 5-3 upset of Augsburg College on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Bethel broke a two-season, 17-game MIAC losing streak with the victory, improving to 2-17-0 overall and 1-10-0 in MIAC play. Meanwhile, Augsburg ended a four-game winning streak in falling to 13-7-0 overall and 8-5-0 in MIAC play.
Storm scored the game's first goal just 22 seconds into the first period, and added his second goal at the 13:29 mark of the second period, giving the Royals a two-goal advantage, as Bethel answered every rally the Auggies made in the game.
Despite being outshot 39-19 -- 32-11 in the last two periods -- Bethel controlled the game and converted when it counted, scoring on three of six power-play opportunities. This season, Augsburg has given up 29 power-play goals in 103 opportunities, a 28.2-percent man-advantage scoring percentage for its opponents.
Augsburg cut the lead to 3-2 after two periods, but Bethel scored twice on the power play in the final period to preserve the win. Chris Carroll (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) had a power-play goal at the 4:07 mark and added two assists for the Royals, while Kris Birch (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) secured the win with a power-play goal at the 16:54 mark, adding an assist for a two-point night.
Brian Saintey (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and Dan Ubl (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had two assists for the Royals, who have won just three MIAC games in the last two seasons (3-24-0). It was Bethel's first win over Augsburg since the 2000-01 season.
Brad Schwarzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.),
Steve Belde (So., Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and
David May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) scored for the Auggies.
Erik Young (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies, making 14 saves. The loss broke a personal four-game winning streak for Young.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/1) at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn.
